Man, I wish I knew this a few weeks ago. Just finished my first masters study... came out alright for a noob. I learned a lot. I really learned a lot. But on reflection I sort of came to some conclusions. It didn't take me hundreds of hours but it did take me over ten. I realised it wasn't a sustainable method for a working dad. Also I sort of thought by directly emulating the masterpiece I am in essence a copyist not an artist. That one bugs me despite whatever value I got from the practice. This practice I can do and come away from it with the lessons learned and not have that type of doubt. I'm on Krita so I think I would have to colour pick a swatch manually but I did that on the one on one study anyway. I still see value doing the one on one at certain times in terms of figuring out composition, shape language etc but this is a game changer for me for everything else. Thank you. Peace. 🙏 🤘

You bet, Brent! Thanks for the great reply, I'm right there with you on the "Dad time is actually NO time" when it comes to art, ha! I think it's a testament to finding ANY time, no matter how much or small, that can still allow for some solid studying and improvement. I think I'm gonna bring out Krita for the next video or two!

Amazing video Wesley! I appreciate you sharing all of this knowledge on master studies. Bonus points for discussing the settings/setup that most content creators overlook at the very beginning. I have never really sat down and attempted to do a studies, I will definitely have to give this sphere method a try.

you need to add "rebelle" in your title so this comes up in searches. ONe of the best tutorial on rebelle. Better that official channel, that guy dont even prepare his material before he start.

Usually when I do Master Studies, I pick one or two things to specifically focus on (such as ‘brushwork’ or ‘turning form with temperature’). This method keeps me from mindlessly copying and allows me to zero in on how that particular artist solves those specific problems. I also will usually find the part (or parts) of the painting that excites me the most and only do smaller studies of those parts to keep me from getting bored. I think the important part of this video is that Wes found a method that works for him and that finding methods or processes that keep you excited to learn and progress is what’s really important. Great vid brother!! I also agree with what someone else mentioned in the comments, recommending that you label your vids with the software used; Rebelle and ArtRage folks need more AND easier to find content!

Many thanks for the kind words! You're absolutely right, finding your *thing* that gets you motivated and excited is a HUGE boost to enjoyment, and if you're enjoying yourself, you'll be WAY more likely to do the "hard stuff", ha!

My favorite part of the video is just hearing your passion for art as a general medium come across.

Love this method of studying from masters! I definitely get what you mean about the process getting too tedious after a certain amount of time, that's why personally I have been doing 2-3 hours-ish color composition style master studies (both due to lack of patience and skill) but this method looks awesome too and you did a great job! For video recommendations, I am a huge fan of software that tries to simulate real-life painting (ie. Artrage, Rebelle), so any painting process done within them is fun to watch content. Keep it up!!

Nicely done. That sphere looks legit a part of the painting, and you're right - a much more effective use of time than a full master study. Subbed :)

Another great one, Wes!! Very informative. Seems I have snoozed a bit too much on that pigment button. Better start using that more!! I believe the color set from picture option is from Rebelle 6 pro, as I recall using it a lot last year when I studied artists. Last thing... Rebelle brush pack when?! :p

Hey Wesley. Excellent video and idea for improving and I will do these exercises. Love your sphere! Can you tell me me, in your opinion, which is the best digital painting software on the market to simulate traditional media, like oils, acrylics, pastels, and so on? I use Corel Painter and it is quite impressive, especially Thick Paint. It blows my mind. I honestly don not know any other by own experience but I am curious. Thank you.and have a great weekend. Pedro from Portugal.

Hey Pedro, thanks so much for the comment! So the other traditional-style programs I'd highly recommend are Rebelle and ArtRage. Rebelle is a bit more robust in the features it has, but both do a GREAT job of getting a traditional looking painting quickly. Also, you may check out Paintstorm Studio, as some of the brushes there are FANTASTIC. They don't have the impasto/thick paint look, but they do have incredible wet-into-wet blending and texture. Hope this helps!

Have you considered putting your Rebelle7 brushes up for download/sale? I'd appreciate it so much :(
@ArtOfWesGardner3 ай бұрын
I need to make a full batch for sure! Since I've only custom made like one or two brushes, I don't think my understanding of all the aspects of the brush creator is worth putting up yet!

Does using works from modern artists count as master study too? The one that are way above my level? Or master's study usualy refers to a more classical works?
@ArtOfWesGardner7 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Anyone you deem a "master" works, as they'll probably have everything you'll want/need to study! It can even be a certain portion of a piece instead of the entire thing, if you're really focusing on studying something specific (like edges, value, color control, etc.)
