WORD OF WARNING: DO NOT use the "Make Overhangs printable" setting if you're printing something with parts that you'll have to assemble later. It can change the geometry of the parts that have to fit together, which will, therefore, no longer fit together. It happened to me, don't let it happen to you.

For those who print in ABS/ASA. another super helpful tip for easily removable supports is to crank up the fan on support interfaces. Those filaments need less cooling for better layer adhesion, so when you want less adhesion for supports, turn up the cooling. Orca has a specific setting for "Support Interface Fan Speed". I would imagine other slicers have that as well.
@UncleJessy Жыл бұрын

I sliced a storage box with latch and lid today in Orca Slicer.. It had one perimeter of an overhang that was either going to fail or need 7 hours worth of supports generated around the entire print. "Modify overhang to make them printable" saved me. It literally removed this one extrusion of an overhang and then bam! No supports needed at all. Being a former Cura Kool-aid enthusiast, Orca Slicer has me now. It's so good, and slicing time is souch faster than in Cura.

Worth noting that the "make overhangs printable" is a setting that was added to Orcaslicer in the last couple of versions. It took several months of development.

"branch diameter angle" can also be used to make sure the tree supports are anchored down properly. If you increase it, the branches start out thicker by the bed and then become thin like they normally are near the model.

I use those settings especially the branch diameter but another one to use if you just want the branches to withstand a tall trunk add a wall to the branch in the "Tree branch wall loop" and will turn your custom branches into the strong preset or even stronger depending on how many loops you add (strong has 2 by default).

So good! I'll try these tweaks out - especially bumping up the branch diameter. The modify geometry stuff is wild but I'd be scared of ruin part accuracy.

I’m not a Prusa Slicer user and use Cura 5.4/5.5 a lot. You’re right about support z distance. With larger nozzles and thicker layers, you definitely want to experiment with that setting (Support Interface). I also reduce support density to 2 or 3%. Much as people should run temp towers and flow cubes to dial in settings, I do support test prints since different brand materials can behave differently. So for my prints using a 0.8 or 1.0 mm nozzle, with 0.30 layer height, there’s isn’t a real golden rule on what’s best. Print safe and experiment with your settings 🤓

My main thought on the Makers Muse video as well was that you could accomplish similar results using organic supports by tweaking the settings. They are very versatile, but can take a lot of tuning. By varying the settings you can also dramatically increase or decrease print time.

@OlavAlexanderMjelde11 ай бұрын
Having owned a 3dprinter just for a week or so, Ive also seen that you should also try rotating objects so you can use less support. Also playing with infill, if it doesent need strength - a lot of people will say lightning 40%, but Ive seen some parts actually print quicker with a gyriod 5-20%, which is much stronger. But some object do print slower with gyriod... So I am kindof like considering: what is needed and then slice, then try some other settings, slice. Compare grammes of filament used and print time, also considering that some times you may see print time reduce, but you increase the risk of prints not going well.

if I had to guess it's not in those slicers because it's FOSS licensed. I haven't paid tooooo much attention to the licensing of slicers, but I know the reason a lot of them are open source is because they *_have_* to be. As in, part of the license says 'if you fork this project and make a derivative it must share the same license, you cannot modify this code without making those modifications open source' and I've heard that at least the bambu slicer is proprietary. Again, flying by wire here, got no proof of any of this, but I'm guessing it's a feature that was implemented by the community as FOSS code meaning it can't be ported to proprietary slicers without them either using a GPL-condom or FOSSing their slicers.
