Patience is a virtue. I'm trying to convince a streamer there is "a problem" with the audio. The situation: - A device in contact with the mic-stand vibrates at 53 Hz. - The boom of the mic-stand resonates at 53 Hz. - The mic is good, but unusually sensitive to low frequency. - There is no high pass filter. - There is no shock mount. - The streamer monitors with a mobile phone. - The streamer doesn't really know how to read the OBS meter. The hum reaches -24 dB, the peak voice reaches -16 dB. So the signal to noise ratio is 8 dB. Thank you for making this video, Mr. B. You're doing a great job!
@MrBinthestudio4 жыл бұрын
Wow... What fun! This is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about 😅
@Buzz_Purr4 жыл бұрын
@@MrBinthestudio I know right? Fixing this hum is fairly easy. Don't attach vibrators to your mic-stand, and use a high pass filter. But the real problem is that the streamer doesn't believe me, lol. Would you be willing to make a video about "How to monitor your audio"? In a live situation, closed headphones are essential. You need to know how to read a level meter. And all that jazz ...

Thank you! I started offering guided meditations online 2 months ago. Hopefully I haven't offended too many ears without the high pass filter! 😅 That's what I love about this project, learn something new everyday! Thank you for sharing 😁 One question, which I didn't find in comments below: when editing, is there a preferred order to use the high pass filter? Should I use it first? Or normalize first and then high pass?
@MrBinthestudio2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! It really doesn't matter where you apply the high pass. You can apply it at the mic or in post production. The result is ultimately the same. In post production, if you have an effects chain, I would typically apply the high pass first before any other effects
@Kamihito24 жыл бұрын
you deserve more subs. btw should i use high pass filter at the start of the chain?
@MrBinthestudio4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes, earlier is better for applying the filter, but as long as you're using it somewhere in the process, it will help.

So, pretty much as a rule of thumb, always do a low cut/ high pass when recording lead vocals ?

So then, I'm assuming a high pass filter is good for helping get rid of wind noise, as I have heard it been referred to as a low frequency rumble?

Yes, it helps, but sometimes wind noise can be a variety of frequencies, not just lows.

Thanks for watching! I would do neither. I would use the high pass for vocals as well. I would also recommend watching my video on recording vocals. Cheers!

Should I add the filter during recording through the SM7b, through the recorder (MixPre), or in post? What's the preferred method? I'm guessing in post so nothing is cut off?
@MrBinthestudio3 жыл бұрын
It really doesn't matter, but one advantage to saving it until post is that if you decide you don't like/need the filter, you can remove it, whereas if you record it with the mic's filter on, it's stuck that way. Thanks for watching! :)
@nothingwithoutmusic3 жыл бұрын
Great video! Question: how do you add the high pass filter in ProTools? That's my DAW of choice.
@MrBinthestudio3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Most of the EQ plugins that come with Pro Tools have a high pass built into them. In fact, the plugin I'm using at 3:45 is the 1-band EQ.

Question, what if you set the "High Pass Filter" on the Shure SM7b, do you still apply it on the DAW? Shouldn't I apply it on one or the other, or both?
@MrBinthestudio3 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't be necessary to add it in the DAW if you already did it at the mic, because - in theory - there wouldn't be anything to remove below that frequency. The only difference would be if you wanted the cutoff frequency to be slightly higher than what the mic provides, then you could do it in the DAW as well.
@gghc4 жыл бұрын
first off, love your videos! #worstepisodeevuur i do have a question mr b! so in the whole signal path there are mics, preamps, interface etc and they all have hpfs, how should we choose? are there chances that we need 2 hpfs for vocals? would there be a problem if we have more than 1 going on? i couldnt notice any significant difference when i turned 2 or more on, any general rule of thumb you'd recommend? Thanks a lot and best wishes!
@MrBinthestudio4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! It really doesn't matter where in the signal chain you add it, but it's best to catch it early, like at the preamp. That way, if you have a compressor later in the chain, it's not being affected by extra energy in the low end. As for the other part of your question, it won't hurt anything if you have more than one.

@MrBinthestudio4 жыл бұрын
Hi Victorino, thanks for watching! It wouldn't hurt to activate both. The slope on the SM7's rolloff looked a bit gradual for my taste, so you might get better results using the preamp's hi-pass as well.

What plugins should I put on channel strip while recording vocals ? Help me out Mr.B 😬....I want my vocals to sound professional...
@MrBinthestudio4 жыл бұрын
While recording, nothing. When you're recording at 24 bit, there's enough dynamic range that you can record without compression or anything else. Add your plugins later, during the mix. While recording vocals, spend time getting the placement just right. Most of the time, a vocal will need, at a minimum, a bit of compression. EQ and reverb optional.
