The architecture of this Japanese kindergarten is striking: it has an oval shape which frames a garden, trees are growing through the roof of the building. Slides lead the way into the garden and animals are part of the establishment. There are no internal walls, so the children hear the noises from neighbouring classes, helping them hone their concentration skills. But what is the purpose of this odd architecture?
Its architect, Takaharu Tezuka, has designed it to fulfill the need for doing the same thing over and over again. Through repetition, children investigate the world: the roof serves as a running track, as a place to interact with the trees growing below. It offers a room to the children where they can learn about the risks of growing up...learn more about this special kindergarten!

“They learn about the risk of growing up.” Absolutely agree with this statement. Being a primary school teacher myself, I used to always scream at children running and playing at the school hall but this video really open and change my mind.

In Oregon, they send kids for a week (usually 6th, or 5th graders) to outdoor school and they learn all about wildlife..it’s a required curriculum, and if you cannot attend, they have you learn it anyway. It’s payed for by the state of Oregon, and all. My cousins live there and they say it’s a blast! I love japan..

I live in BC and we put importance on early childhood before kindergarten. There are some instances where Chinese families came here and the kids were behind in social, emotional and motor skills compared to other kindergarten kids.

Meanwhile in America: Schools & Teachers are getting too much money. If they can't afford private schools they should be stuck in a tiny classroom with 50 students.

You shouldn’t be including the teacher in the getting too much money statement.

People need to stop clapping if architects do the most normal thing in the world..installing a garden. And what a lame one that is. I worked in plenty of Kindergardens and this is very clearly an F-Tier garden with no thought and effort putting in. They are called KInderGARDENS for a reason. And why do they quote pedagogic principles if the opposite is embodied in this collection of missing basics and dumb ideas. And to be clear..that one is far inferior to most Kindergärten gardens. No bushes, no flowers, no rocks, no sand boxes, no possiblitie to use the water pumps to make rivers or dams, no animals and no additional playing installation...so while most gardens allow the thing that garden allows (climbing a tree or running around) while not allowing dozens of other sets of movements and experiences..thart you can find on every ordinary playground. You want to offer kids risk and challenges? Than just plant normal trees in your garden..done ...but I guess that doesn't get you into TED talks. Plus the entire building is open, so no-one ever has a moment of silence or (what I suspect) the educators keep the kids more quiet all the time. Plus there seems to be little to no shade so kids have to further reduce their movment depending on the weather conditions. So what we have in total is less nature, less movement and learning experience..BUT thank god we have a futuristic desing so someone will be impressed. And isn't it telling how they interviewed the educator who hasn't worked in any other place...well she would be surprised how "boring" normal Kindgartens do who haven't been designed to get the designer attention but to get the kids the best possible environment.
