With the back seats up, the Audi trunk is actually larger than the Golf R I think. I had a MK7 Golf R and now have a 8V RS3. Can actually fit quite a bit in the trunk of the Audi. Was debating between this and the Golf R as I was looking to upgrade from a MK 7.5 GTI, went with the S3 because even though the R is more powerful (not by much, but still) and has more sporty options like the torque vectoring and all that, the interior didn’t hold up for the price they are going for. But the real deal breaker was the climate controls. If I’m gonna daily a car I don’t want to have to screw around with menus to change the temperature or fan speed, I just want a few physical buttons, is that really so much to ask?

One small comment and one bigger one.: You mentioned the strange circular "button" on the console for adjusting the stereo volume. I would note that there is also a nice "rotary wheel" on the steering wheel that adjusts the volume as well. I pretty much ignore the console button and use wheel on the steering wheel. The bigger comment is that I went shopping for a 2024 VW Golf R at years end to replace my 2016 VW Golf R (6-speed manual). I tried several VW dealers in both Northern and Southern California and they were all asking a $15,000 premium for the Golf R over MSRP. One dealer even had a "leftover" 2023 VW Golf R and was asking $15,000 over list for that one as well. Meanwhile, I decided to test drive the Audi S3 at the Audi dealership which was 2 blocks away from the VW dealer with both the 2024 and 2023 model VW Golf R at $15,000 over list. I had test driven a 2016 Audi S3 prior to buying the 2016 Golf R and just liked driving the Golf R more. BUT, the Audi dealer had a fairly loaded 2023 Audi S3 Premium Plus and was willing to talk a deal. I was very impressed after the test drive (much nicer interior and had the adaptive suspension, moonroof, and killer Bang and Olufsen stereo that were not available when I bought the 2016 Golf R. AND, the piped-in exhaust sound was, in my opinion, much better than my Golf R synthetic sound. Bottom line, I got the Audi S3 for $8500 below MSRP which looked much better than paying $62,000 for a Golf R (about a $10,000 savings in the instance). Yes, I no longer have the 6-speed manual, but this sucker is plenty fast and fun to drive, more fun than I remember of the S3 from my 2016 test drive.

Great review guys. I love my 2020 S3 despite the back seat lack of room, and I'd take it over a Golf R any day but that's me. You mentioned the upshift problem a couple of times and previous models, like the 2020, allow you to engage "manual" mode by moving the shifter horizontally, where it will not shift up unless you do it yourself with the paddles or the shifter. Does this 2022 model not have this feature, or did I miss it in the review?
@fatality20063 жыл бұрын
was thinking the same thing. no way Audi would take that away, it defeats the purpose of having paddle shifts. on all Audis with paddle shifters i’m pretty sure it’s the same. If it’s in auto mode, you’re only downshifting to get the extra grunt to overtake and stuff. of course it’ll automatically shift up gear if you’re still in auto-mode.

One thing I don’t understand is the packaging on this Audi. The golf R has heated and ventilated seats and heated rear seats. The Audi which is supposedly VW’s luxury brand is not available. Only heated front seats. And also no heated steering wheel in the Audi vs the Golf R. If I am paying 15k more, these features should be on the S3

I had a 2017 S3 and it was a terrific car. At that time, the S3 was quicker than the Golf R. Not sure why a VW is quicker than and Audi for 2022. RS3 will solve that problem. I might take the S3 over the R just for the interior. The 10k delta might be worth it. VW offers more for the money including heated steering wheel and cooled seats.

Sure it may have been quicker than a manual Golf R but DSG vs DSG the Golf R for Mk7 and Mk7.5 is quicker than the 8V/8V.5 S3. This is because both cars had exact same drivetrain and power figures year to year as well as the fact that the Golf R is actually lighter.
@Chair9913 жыл бұрын

Is the new Haptic Touch entertainment system in the Golf R / GTI a dealbreaker? Is the HK inferior to the Fender tuner? Is the wireless Apple Play seamless? The driving dynamics sound like a given. But is that enough at the relatively high price range? I’m old but would still take the R over the S.

This is a difficult sell to me when the R exists. Maybe the buyers of the two are different. I know I'd consider both but go for the R. The R is underrated, power wise. Why is auto upshift such a complaint. It's downshifting that matters more when driving hard. I suppose it's that one instance when the driver wants to bang off the rev-limiter instead of shifting up then down again?? Makes no sense
@RandyAugustus3 жыл бұрын
You don’t want to shift mid-corner;up or down.
@Sold_a_dummy3 жыл бұрын
@@RandyAugustus So would you just bang it off the limiter mid corner? Bear with me here. By _mid corner_ won't I be accelerating out of the turn? If it downshifts mid corner then I'm slowing and doing something wrong. A DSG shifts so fast that it won't upset the car. Am I wrong? Downshifts definitely help braking and balance etc. The computer knows shift points way better than drivers. Ahh! Autocross! It would be shit in autocross. In this case it would kill times because when the driver expects to slow the car, it suddenly upshifts.

I would take a S3 hatch over the Golf R, mostly because in my country the S3 is actually cheaper than Golf R by like 5k. However, if i really was looking to buy one, i would get a used MK7.5 Golf R, better interior and cheaper.
@RobHTech3 жыл бұрын
OK. So Quattro and 4Motion aren't always just interchangeable terms. Audi customizes each Quattro system to each specific vehicle. And, as the S3 has transversely mounted engine, it uses a Haldex (Borg/Warner) system, as does the Golf 8 R, which comes with a limited slip front diff. 2022 S3 uses Borg/Warner Haldex system with up to 85% to rear, FWD biased, reactionary, All Haldex systems uses transversely mounted engines, center diff. is not required, has open diff. at front and rear, with Haldex system in rear diff., turns on-off on-demand, standard is 90-10 F-R and able to switch to 50-50 max to rear, thus is FWD biased and reactionary; Haldex is lighter than Torsen; Haldex is NOT full-time AWD; Torsen has engine moved forward, reducing handling; new Haldex (2022) can split up to 85% (possibly) to rear and has front LSD. To upgrade to active torque vectoring full-time AWD Quattro requires buying in at the higher price bracket vehicles that use Torsen systems.
@persiashahdi52153 жыл бұрын
"with up to 85% to rear" I'd like to see where you get that from. I've continuously heard that even the newest Haldex technology can only send at most 50% to the wheel. And the whole trick is that it can send 100% of that 50% to one particular rear wheel. But I've never heard of it sending 85% to the rear.
@chobocops3 жыл бұрын
Wait i thought the mk8 golf r ditched the haldex for a new system
@DarthChewie3 жыл бұрын
MK8 R has a rear diff, not front. And Haldex is max 50% rear, not 85%. 85% is on the full-time Quattro systems.
@RobHTech3 жыл бұрын
@@DarthChewie yes. The 2022 S3 no longer uses Haldex, and can distribute 85% to rear. Transverse mounted does not get true Quattro, in my opinion. Haldex works great for most people. To get what I'm talking about one needs to go Audi and higher price bracket. I'm not referring to the MK8R in that regard.
@RobHTech3 жыл бұрын
@@chobocops It did. Well, it's a Magna system. It's still only 50-50, but at rear can use up to 100% to either axle or anywhere in between. To get the Torsen system, true Quattro, you need to go Audi high trim levels.
