Star Wars Episode 1: Battle For Naboo for the N64 is the final of a 3 game exclusivity agreement between Lucas arts and Nintendo. With the other 2 of course being the surprisingly fun Star Wars Racer and the iconic Rogue Squadron
Now I think just about everyone knows about Rogue squadron for the N64. Created by Factor 5 studios its Considered one of the greatest Star Wars games out there and the game that of course launched the acclaimed Rogue Squadron series.
And given how successful Rogue squadron was it's not too surprising that Factor 5 would also be trusted with the final star wars game for the N64
So why don't we blow on that cartridge, Grab an uncomfortable controller. and start her up.

As a kid this game was fun but also felt really intense, the stroy was pretty dark and serious at times, really showed the struggle the citizens and resistance had on naboo while phantom menace was happening. I hope this game gets ported to current gen because its a real gem I'd love to replay.

Right! Civilians dying screaming for help as others are being put in forced labor camps. Kinda dark for star wars but some of these 90s and early 2000s games went all out at times

Excellent retrospective. I remember this game fondly. It was shocking to see the bomber is only in one level, I used to cruise around in that for hours. One thing I do remember is if you double tap left C you can get a seeker missile to fly off without locking. It's essential for some 9f the Gold medals.

19:00 The thing about this level that makes my opinion of it not nearly as bad is that it has a pair of exploits that make it the easiest level to cheese through and earn a platinum medal: every hit on the main satellite's shield counts as a kill for your kill count, and once you come into view of the first shield satellite, you can turn right around and the main target's shield will be gone, letting you finish the whole level right there.

I don’t know how long this channel has existed, but my God it’s top notch in every way. Especially the intro. I have watched so many videos this week. Would love too see Jedi Outcast (put probably 200 hours in to it on the GameCube due to multiplayer) as well as other N64 titles I grew up on like Paper Mario, Space Station Silicon Valley, etc. Video game retrospectives are my new drug, and it doesn’t get better than this channel. Especially!!! The extensive ones.

Just wanted to say thank you, pretty much no one talks about this game. Or when they do there isn't any love in it. With your video it feels like you played it for more than just content. Also the more medals you get the more places you can use different vehicles, its REALLY weird. Get enough and you can use the bomber in a few other missions.... but there is no point really because the N-1 is better than every other anything in the game , even the Sith Infiltaror(which in itself is worse than the Police Cruiser) I was stuck on the smuggler mission for YEARS so fun fact, you literally can't fight them all, the STAPS infinitely respawn. There is a hilarious way to cheese the Com Sat mission and get a easy Platinum medal. Fly towards it and fire the while time, fly away, turn around. The Shield will be down and every hit on the shield counts as a kill. This was the second level I was stuck on for years XD, after that I found cheats If you shoot the rocks ahead of time you get a cutscene where they fall and block the path before the civilians can get to them and some tanks blow them up, funny attention to detail Kol Kotha is a Gran, there is concept art of him floating around its pretty neat. Also the OST for the game is almost entirely original, even the stuff like Dual of the Fates is a Remixed version, its AWESOME. Also Also Borvo and Sykes show up in the MMO Star Wars Galaxies Camp 4 is also mentioned by name when the droids capture the Queen, and would have been where she ended up if the Jedi hadn't rescued her. When you blow up those Giant landers Sykes will Exclaim something Different for each one (There are 2, "For Naboo" and "For the Queen") You need Cluster Seekers to do it though. The civilian Speeders actually shoot things witch is funny. You can blow up the wall yourself by shooting the containers behind it Cluster Seekers make this mission a joke. It is absurd how powerful a fully upgraded N-1 is. The Bomber is redundant once you get them and its kin of a shame. You can actually blow up the door yourself, great for getting a Gold and required for Platinum if you hold the laser secondary button on the Gian Speeder for a few seconds it'll charge and one shot most things. I used to spend hour s just shooting at Droid Starfighters in this mission, its REALLY fun to fly around like you said The Second Bonus mission is where you get Cluster Seeker missiles, when the mission starts immmediately turn around and fly down. The AAT and Swamp Speeder are actually unlicks... for getting all Platinum Medals. Any You got a new Subscriber thank you for taking me on a Journey through my childhood again

It did some things better. I really liked the way the missions followed a narrative. Also, it was possibly the first game, at least console game, to have commentary by the creators (something that's still pretty rare). Commentary tracks became huge on DVDs, but for some reason, never caught on for games. I really appreciated hearing the commentary on the game, like learning how the gunboat scene mission was inspired by Apocalypse Now. It wasn't the start exactly of the series doing more than just ships. Repulser craft, like the snow speeders, were different in ways than pure flight craft, but this was expanded. The land speeders and boats did offer different play styles, and this would, for good or bad, be extended in future games.

I loved this game, got it on pc out of a bargain bin. Piloting the flash and gian speeders and the federation gunboat, the bomber part, and the control ship and sleek naboo craft was the best, heck i only disliked one thing, not being able to fully stop. The droid fighter swarms in space were deadly as were the turbolasers, and picking apart the destructable bits of the control ship was really fun. Great video! Good to see BfN getting some love. I disagree about the controls though, I think they're much more fluid and responsive here. Some of the ships in RS had the turning circle of a shopping trolley full of bricks. There's also the super powered swamp speeder that you get after unlocking all plats. Its quite odd as there's really no use for it once you've earned it

A core childhood memory I have of this game was when I was trying to get gold on every mission during summer break around when it first came out. I went into mission 8 remembering it being really difficult to not die at least once and so I took a huge level of caution throughout the level not dying and with a 90+ accuracy rating only to get completely caught off guard at getting my first ever platinum medal in the game. And since I didn't have internet or a PC at the time I had to wait until summer ended to look it up on a school computer so the whole summer I was just completely bewildered as to why this level had a weird medal instead of the usual gold one.

If I may interject as another 90s kid who also played this fresh off of Rogue Squadron: you aren't actually barred from firing your Secondaries when the Homing upgrade is active. All you have to do is keep tappin' the button to manually fire the projectile without locking on to it. Here's another tidbit that Rebel Strike carried over from this game: hidden Medals. If by some way you managed to do *really* good in a mission, you'll unlock a Platinum medal. The actual condition for these medals is completely hidden and the game never hints at nor tell you about it. And yes, there are additional unlocks for getting Platinum on all of them: the AAT and a second aquatic vehicle, the Swamp Speeder. It's essentially the Gian Speeder on water. For some bizarre reason though, it has no vehicle description when highlighting it like the N-1 in Rogue Squadron. But unlike the N-1, the Swamp Speeder doesn't even appear to have any concept art behind it and it certainly wasn't in the movie, either. Also, some additional glitchy tidbits If for whatever reason you decide to pilot anything other than the Bomber during the Queen's Gambit, the game will just crash at some point before you can complete it There's also a major oversight regarding the cheats as well. If you unlocked two of the bonus missions, but then just decide to use a cheat the unlock the rest, some sort of bizarre overflow happens where you get access to additional placeholder missions beyond the final bonus mission. Don't try it if you value your cartridge.

Never new about the glitch with cheats. When it came to the the homing missiles i thought i remembered it working the same way but it didn't work like that when i played it, however i was playing an Emulator so could have been an issue with the control mapping causing it.

regarding being unable to fire the homing missiles at non-lockable targets, unless I'm mis-remembering (it's been a good few years since I last played the game) you can get them to fire by rapidly tapping the missile button. After 3-4 rapid taps it will begin firing rockets but it's not super consistent and requires some very rapid tapping to work. The same thing could be done in Rogue Squadron as well.

Might be thinking of Star wars: Starfighter. Takes before and during episode 1 and you play in a Naboo starfighter

🤔 . . . Do a duality of two games, in retrospective chronological order, along with the movie’s timeline: the one you just did here & _Star Wars: Starfighter_ . More precisely the timing of this game’s pilot, the other game’s pilot, & Anakin Skywalker’s flying…

You know that final level taking down the space station, I can't help but feel as if Star Fox Assault was copying it for the Orbital Gate level, except you were defending it.

@@BBQBARNES-GAMING At the time I didn't really care for the game, but it's since grown to be one of my favourite games ever. I highly recommenced it, the sound track alone is worth the play. (Just change the control settings for the one foot sections to the 2nd option, default option is kinda terrible)

I find it odd that you praise the explosion effects when another retrospective compared them directly to the ones in rogue squadron and side by side.....naboos explosions look TERRIBLE in comparison. I feel like you may have gotten some facts wrong here. As well as the use of paper textures instead of models for some vehicles, this game looks worse (from what u can see) then rogue squadron. I think the shockwave from the explosion is new, but the fire part looks like a bad green screen effect lol. Pretty sure that was the critics mentality at time of release as well, not concrete on that atm. Still, luv the video.

Id definitely agree some of the explosions look worse like the trade federation ship at the end but i really like the land vehicle explosions a lot. The shockwave effects you mentioned of the AATs after they drop to the ground is way better than the ATSTs weightless exsplosions from rogue squadron. Tie fighters were superior to the droid fighters though in everyway. I think it was a give in take lowering some aspects to increase others like draw distance, weather etc. Eitherway i could have probably done a better job at talking about some of differences of the 2 games lol

Okay if someone's pointed this out I apologize but I guess I got to be the jerk to do it you said three Star wars games but what about Star wars Shadow of the empire that was also a Nintendo 64 game for Star wars

Thanks! I understand if the swearing is a little jarring. I try and record as if I'm just talking with my friends and unfortunately growing up on the coast i developed a sailors tongue lol my shorter videos I try to eliminate it entirely but in longer videos i just slightly tone it down but keep so i don't start sounding to robotic which I sometimes have a problem with. But thanks for watching and commenting i always appreciate feedback!
