Better Than The Bowline?-Double Dragon Knot

Do you use the bowline? It has a fatal flaw. A bowline can easily shake loose in many ropes. Enter the Double Dragon knot. It won't shake loose, and it comes untied only when you want it to.

There is a an easy way to tie the double dragon knot around a pole and have the pole inside the loop. I use it to secure my sailboat to a piling at the marina. The bowline isn't the knot to use in that situation, although I do see most boaters using it.

I gotta say, “fat string” wouldn’t be my first choice to illustrate knot tying. Too many fingers and not enough knot. ; )

I believe the "single" version of this knot is called a tugboat bowline, without the extra wrap to double it up. To make it, make a slipped figure-8 knot with a long working end. Nip the end inside the slip loop and let it invert into a fixed loop, aka the tugboat bowline. Make it with a figure-8 noose, and you get the other version of the tugboat bowline, which is a little more stable. Try it, you'll like it:)- and gain insight into the origins of the double dragon loop. Cheers

In my view, the double bowline is the best end loop knot (the best in-line loop being the alpine butterfly). It is easy to remember and to tie, easy to tie around one's waist or an object, and easy to dress and check; it comes undone easily even after withstanding great strain, and it's bloody strong. What more can you ask for? And in my opinion, it has a more balanced structure than this one, although this is a very nice loop also and worthy of use if one likes it. Cheers

Do you know what the efficiency of this knot is? The efficiency of the bowline is 65%, meaning if the breaking strength of the rope 1000 pounds, if there is a bowline tied in it the breaking strength of that rope is now 650 pounds, this is because knots are weak points. I use the bowline several times a day if not dozens, I have never had a bowline knot come untied due to jerking it. In your video you said it was a stronger knot, I would just like to know it's efficiency from a scientific level. If it is a better knot I'm down to start incorporating in everyday work life

Some rope types do not hold a Bowline securely. It’s good to know other knots in such a situation.

A bowline allows the line to be passed through a ring etc before tying, how do you do this with the double dragon. Or is there another way of tying it to allow this?

Yes, there is another way to tie the DD, and the DD does not require a pre-knot. A downside of the standard Bowline is you cannot tie it on a bight.

Im going to experement with this. My question is, can you tie a running double dragon around a tree limb? And how convienient would that be if your hanging 70' above ground?

True, the DD would be tricky to tie as a running knot, since you have to pull the final loop through the knot.

Every single closed loop has a running cousin; just run your standing line through the loop and pull it out. You can do this in the middle as well as from any available end of any object. One does not have to “make a running xxxxxloop” from scratch. Classic example… the running bowline. Videos available where the author is tying the loop around the standing end. Which is fine. But if you already have your bowline loop tied, wrap the line (around a tree, etc) pull the standing rope thru the loop, and ….running bowline.

@@nokieng6502 great point. Make a running bowline style rig with any fixed loop and there it is. I'm very fond of this method too, especially great for large diameter objects like trees!
