The Stage seems to me to be one of their best songs: good lyrics, incredible drums, very good video and one of the best solos of A7x. Speaking of different appreciation for the first songs you heard, I think you should react to "Beast and The Harlot" live in the LBC. For me in a top 3 of their songs, with one of their best lyrics, one of the best if not the best riff they have ever done, a catchy chorus, incredible drums... I think you would like it more in this version.

What gets me is how you can tell each chorus was recorded differently and they didn't just copy and paste it. In the second one, it sounds like he sings "UPON THE STAYOOGE". It takes some serious faith to record such a dry song without a lot of polish and fixing takes. On Higher, that might have been a bad idea in retrospect, but in this song, it's one of the most wonderful things. It really is organic and classic, and they can never be considered a band that couldn't perform the songs live.

Another interesting insight in to the finer nuances of record making. It's changed beyond recognition, since the earlier day of rock metal. Back when Motorhead were recording their 1st or 2nd album. The Scorpions, and Budgie recorded in a mobile studio in the '80's
