I've been using this Limiter for a couple of months. It's really good and the harmonic options sound excellent and are my favourite feature. I agree that the clipper is excellent. I'm very happy with this unit and my mixes have improved :)

This thing is insane, what a way to finish your master you know? The high-end is nice and metallic in a pleasing way, and you get separation between instruments almost like a summing unit before you even engage any width, I don't know how this thing does it.

9.57 The sound is already good... I find the sound we are looking for in a mix is to take the listener to feel like the driver... this is where I got a love for Neve and tape... I love it with them as pin ups because I'm not fair off homeless, but still, truth is truth and this sounds good... will keep listening

Sorry for beating that old dog. I know of no single plugin, which could do exactly the same, but I can imagine a chain of plugins which could. The tactile thing is maybe a reason to buy such a unit and if you run a mastering place, it could be a good investment. Although for the average bedroom producer the benefits do not justify the price. Just my 2c.

I just got this, and compared with the most popular limiting plugins. I was just laughing surprised of how much damage plugins do to your music. I’m glad I bought this wonderful device so I can stay 100% away from “Limiter” plugins now.

@@lashtal plugins may not damage “destroy” your sound, but many of them will make your sound flat, lifeless with no dimension. At least that has been my experience, and have been doing this for a very long time. Nowadays I keep them at a very minimum and I only use just few that I know don’t mess up with your precious recordings. They way I see it now is if you not there for the ultimate analog sound, then just don’t worry about it, audio with plugins is just fine. 🤙🏼

Im still convinced hardware sounds better I feel you get more transparency and accuracy as well as better on a sonic level. I think many people want to disagree cause plug ins cost next to nothing. This unit is about 3,000

the question is how this would compare to the latest limiters that are coming out - TokyoDawnLabs TDR 6 - Eventide Elevate - Ozone 8 - and my favorite one KClip please do a comparison between this two i love KClip

Thanks for the in depth review. Regarding your final thoughts...is it fair to say that a software clipper such as Kclip would generally do as good a job (strictly comparing to the clipper on the bettermaker)? I realize one may be more suitable than the other on some material, etc. i own Kclip and like it...just curious if the bettermaker is more transparent.

Help me understand! I bought Bettermaker Mastering Limiter 2.0 and am working in Cubase. Why when reducing the output volume on Limiter 2.0 Bettermaker Mastering, the peaks still pass through and the red peak lights up on the channel? In software limiters, by reducing the output volume, we are protected from peaks, but in Bettermaker Mastering Limiter 2.0, by reducing the output volume, peaks still pass through?! Is this how it should be or am I missing something? And, another question - does it matter where to put the Limiter 2.0 Bettermaker control plugin itself, on the master channel or on the track? Thank you in advance! I've already tried recording between two computers via analog connections and the peaks appear again on the recording computer. But it shouldn’t be, on software limiters, when the output level is reduced even by -05 db, the peaks do not pass, but in Bettermaker Mastering Limiter 2.0 they do. And, in general, is it necessary to connect the sound card via analog inputs and outputs with a cable, or does this processor also work via a USB plug-in? Or maybe some kind of calibration is required? Help me please!

Much like the digitally controlled pres on the Neve Genysys Black, is there a computer interface/gui? Nobody sits in front of their outboard gear. An eq is not set and forget. Most likely, I'll be sitting in front of my computer editing tracks.

Hey, first off ,,,great review,,, you actually got me thinking about a few options so if you dont mind I have a cpl of questions. Im upgrading my Mastering/mixing chain and I been reviewing the Bettermaker mastering compressor as well as the Limiter and I notice that they are similar in some features, if you had a choice would you get one over the other? or both?and why? Im already getting the Mastering EQ but not sure if I want to get the Compressor or the Limiter or both,,,,If I get the limiter , I figure I just get a GSSL or a clone as my compressor,,, but I like the features on the compressor , and you did a great review on the limiter ! Seeing you have one and im sure you know a lil about the mastering compressor do you think both units on a mastering chain is overkill? or all 3 units would be a perfect in the same chain. I do Dance, House and pop music and sometimes other genres but never rock or metal. thx in advance and great videos !!!

@@mixbustv Thanks for the reply, I appreciate the time you take to share the knowledge of the craft,, I share some of your same sentiments which is why I have been doing the research and not totally sold, almost but not totally,, but you got to admit the digital recall is very persuasive , but then again what good is the recall feature if the unit does not perform to the value of the cost of the unit in terms of performance, sound and features! So even tho speed of recall is kool for an analog unit,,, the bang still got to be worth the buck,,, Im kind of sold on the EQ cos it fits my needs, but still on the fence for the Compressor vs the Limiter. but on the flip side you got apps like "Session Recall " and "Patchrat" that's a good work around for easier analog recall. So yes,,, sticking to what works and is proven is always an option. The research continues,,,, thanks again for your time ! - jr

I'm not joking, try guitar pedals. Very similar circuits there and loads available. The dynamic range at a final song is well within the range of guitar pedals. You'll just want to get a good quality 9V *linear* power supply and feed that to them. With short shielded cables, high quality power, and of course quality reamping, guitar pedals can do lots more than people think, even on a mix if the pedal isnt bandwidth limited. If you want some smooth soft clipping on a master, wire some germanium diodes on a wire and drive into it and then into a preamp. There's too much mystique in this stuff. Nothing new in analog tech. You pay for switches, dials, and all the components they throw away matching pairs of components for high precision stereo and frequency response. Most of the engineering is copy paste from expired patents or common knowledge circuitry and then whatever twist the engineer can put on it. There are geniuses at work doing great things in some of these companies, but people can get closer than they think with much cheaper things.

The hardware option (ON) it’s not working, it’s not responding to touch… On Protools, the Plugin is displaying (Hardware status DISCONNECT) I changed the midi cable for a new one, so the midi cable is not the problem… I would like to know if you are having some problem with this unit. not trying to be a push over about something I don't own but I did just read the maselec compressor has a compression ratio that goes down to 0.006 so that's quite fast, is that faster than this bettermaker? the rockruepel also claims a .006 time.

Brickwall limiters are look-ahead by definition. Any compressor will have AN attack time. The problem, is you do not use a compressor when you need a limiter, as a general rule. A compressor is used to change the envelope of a signal, a brickwall limiter is used to CHOP OFF the transient. These are two different uses, two different purposes. I tackled this in the compressor vs limiter video, I wish everyone mixing and producing would watch that because (I'm not complaining, just saying I haven't freaking seen anyone but me talking about this and making the concept and the differences clear) I get these questions every other day. So, in practical use, a very fast compressor can tame the transients in a very similar way this (the bettermaker) does. The problem is a different one: brickwall limiters are one of the few processing that was BORN in digital, why? Because analog can't be look-ahead, so, the question is, do we need an hardware brickwall limiter? Some say yes some say no, I say no if the purpose has to be exactly what a digital brickwall limiter does, because nowadays there are some pretty amazing plugin limiters, namely Weiss, Ozone Maximizer, ProL2, Limiter #6. If I really wanted a piece of iron for this, I'd get the maselec mpl-2 (peak limiter, not compressor) or the pendulum PL-2, but, after trying, the results (for me) didn't justify the price. I'd much rather hit my Crane Song HEDD hard if I need

@@mixbustv Hey David. I think those questions come from the popularity of the LA-2a and a billion different clones, both HW and plugins. The limiter/compressor toggle forces the question, from those that don't know the difference. Limiters have faster attack times, and higher ratios than compressors. Aside from the look ahead feature, some use feedback-style to accomplish the look ahead function for sharp transients. I do agree, digital limiters are the best for brick-wall purposes. It's physically impossible for analog limiters to catch a peak at 0.0 ms attack in real-time. There MUST be a delay to do the feedback audio with HW. Digital algorithm can simply choose to ignore any overs or clipping. Virtually creating the brickwall.
