@lautenaudio. Just wanted to confirm, is there any drawback from hanging the mic(Atlantis) upside down for recordings?

These are all great mics and will work wonders on any source. It was a suprise to find that the different settings on the Atlantis came across very subtle - hardly noticable and it sounded more subdued to the others. The Clarion was very open and offered more detail, an immediate winner! The 320 was great as well with superb saturation and also very open but could tell there is a difference in sound due to the mass of the bodies of the mics as the 320 wasn't quite as full. Thanks for posting.

Yeah, I thought the different Atlantis settings were pretty subtle on some sources, but then on some others, it became a little more obvious, which was interesting. But yeah, all three mics are great! I feel like you can't go wrong with any of them.

Great shootout! Thanks! P.S. Edit your videos on a 4K timeline (even if your footage is 1080p) and then render it out as 4k (2160). When you upload it to KZbin, it won't be compressed to bits and your audio will shine and sparkle much better, with far fewer artifacts. I learned that a while ago. It makes a huge difference. Cheers!

@@BetterMixes hey thanks, man! I’m a fan of your channel also! But I noticed audible compression artifacts and had a look. Sure enough it’s a 1080p upload. KZbin gives priority audio (and video) processing to 2160 uploads. Give it a try! Cheers!

Thank you for doing this video. I’ve owned the Clarion for a little over a year. One thing you didn’t touch on was the +10db switch on the clarion. I’m assuming the examples were all recorded on neutral setting, but the +10db does more than just boost it changes the characteristics to be a bit brighter as well. Still not as versatile as the Atlantis though as you mentioned. It would have been interesting to hear her vocal with the +10db clarion vs. forward setting on Atlantis. Regardless, this video was a big eye opener for me! I think the Atlantis sounds barely better than the Clarion on vocals. With the right EQing and processing it would probably make no noticeable difference in a mix. Both mics are fantastic but this gave me some additional peace of mind that I own the Clarion. I’d been searching for this very comparison for a while. Thanks again!
@BetterMixes4 ай бұрын
Yes, you're absolutely right about the +10 switch! I thought about including more about that in this video, but since the Atlantis also has the +10 switch, I just thought it would turn into way too many examples. If I ever get around to making a video strictly on the Clarion, I'll absolutely go into more detail on that! For the examples in this video, both the Clarion and Atlantis were in the +10 setting for vocals and acoustic, the 0 setting for electric guitars and bass, and -10 for drums.

You are right about the + - 10db making a difference in sound on the Clarion, but you can also get more sounds using the different polar patterns. switching from Cardiod to figure 8 gives you a different sound without changing volume.By the way, it is also the best figure 8 setting on a mic that I have ever heared. The sound is the same on the front as on the back, and also the same volume. On a lot of other muli-pattern mics, the sound and volume on both sides of the figure 8 setting is different. One side usually sounds better and louder than the other side.

@ for solo vocals I’ve really only ever used Cardiod. I’ll have to mess around more with it. By the way for anyone reading comments considering these mics: I recently shot the Clarion out with a Neumann TLM 103 and it was much better in every way.

To me the Clarion sounds the best in almost every test. You can EQ it to sound like the Atlantis from what I'm hearing.
@BetterMixes2 ай бұрын
The Clarion is a fantastic mic! And yeah, you can definitely EQ it to at least be in the ballpark of the Atlantis' different sounds. It won't be exactly the same, but you can definitely cover similar ground with some tweaking!
@maxaeonmusic2 ай бұрын
The Clarion sounds similar to the F position Atlantis with a little more grit in the mids. Very nice. The 320 also sounded great with lots of texture. The Atlantis was smooth and polished for sure. I liked N on her voice the best. How do you think the 220 stacks up to the 320? Same capsule.
@BetterMixesАй бұрын
I haven't had the chance to try out the 220 yet, so I can't say for sure, but based on the clips I've heard online, the 220 sounds much much cleaner and clearer. They definitely leaned hard into the tube and transformer sound on the 320, and I think that helps balance the brighter voicing in a really nice way.

Are you speaking into the 320 for the audio of this video, or is it just sitting in front of you for looks? another question: I have the Clarion, and I love the way it sounds on my voice.In your opinion, would I want or need to get an Atlantis? Does the Atlantis sound like the Clarion in cardioid in the forward position? I know the Atlantis has a larger diaphram by 3mm, so does it have a compleatly different sound than the Clarion? I know that's a lot of questions, but what I am trying to decide is, should get an Atlantis if I am happy with the Clarion? Thanks
@BetterMixes26 күн бұрын
Yup, I'm speaking into the 320! Regarding the Clarion vs the Atlantis, they're totally different mics with different sounds. I always wondered that too, if the Atlantis was just like an expanded version of the Clarion, but nope! I'd say if you're happy with the Clarion, stick with it! It's a top-quality mic, and moving to the Atlantis would just be different, not better. I personally think the Clarion is highly underrated in Lauten's lineup.
@lukegowest26 күн бұрын
@@BetterMixes Yes I agree The Clarion is a very top quality mic. I think the Lauten mics have a certain Family sound. I am not looking for another Clarion in the Atlantis. I do want it to be different,but with the same quality and character. I do use different mics on my vocals depending on the style of song I am doing. I do not just make recordings of thee same genre always so if I am recording a big band vocal recording I am going for a warmer more sultry sound. If it is a pop song, a more up front sound etc. do you think there is a setting on the Atlantis that might be close enough to the Clarion to use them together in a Blumlien configuration?
@BetterMixes26 күн бұрын
@@lukegowest Yeah, there's definitely a bit of a family sound between them! So I think most people who like the Clarion would also like the Atlantis. So in that sense, it could be a great option! As far as the blumlein setup, I guess it depends how picky you are about the sounds matching. Like I have some friends who will only ever used matched stereo pairs for stereo recordings and others who will use completely different mics! Again, having that family sound, I think a stereo setup could still sound cohesive and not sound weird or off, but the left and right will definitely be a little different.

Would you recommend spending the extra $400 for the Atlantis over the clarion?
@BetterMixes3 ай бұрын
It really depends! If you currently have a smaller mic collection and are looking for one kinda 'flagship' mic that will cover a whole lot of ground and will work on almost anything, than yeah, I think the Atlantis is worth the extra cash. On the other hand, if you've already got a solid mic locker and are just looking for something new, I think either would be great! If that's the case, hopefully the examples I recorded for this video will give you an idea of which one you click with more sonically.
