Prohibition gags. The cork popping out of the bottle would be a familiar sight to many. As beer was not available, many would make their own home brew - corked, as capping machines were not widely available, and pricey. Brewing is a skill, and if you put n too much yeast, or bottle it before the brew was quite ready, the cork would pop out of the bottle ( or, a cheap bottle would just explode). The guy leaning on the post with the breath is actually drunk - see the fly go into the breath and stagger away. This is during Prohibition, remember so no one could get a drink. No, I guess not. No, certainly not,

You're nobody's sweetheart now, 'Cause nobody wants you, somehow; Fancy hose, silken gown, You'd be out of place in your own home town! When you walk down that old avenue, I just can't believe that it's you! Painted lips, painted eyes, Wearin' a bird of paradise! Well it all seems wrong somehow, But you're nobody's sweetheart now.

I collect pre 1900s bottles and *patent medicines* were a huge thing back in these days, especially before the FDA. They were sold as cure-alls but were usually just mixtures of alcohol, laxatives, opium, cocaine, and God knows what else. Ive got bottles labeled "H.W. Thacthers Liver Pills" "Swamp Root Extract" "Rubifoam for the Teeth" I've even got one called "Dr. Rues Family Laxative Worm Expeller".

Patent medicines were a thing back into the 1800s. They were 'cure all' tonics with a "patented" recipe sold by hucksters going from town to town. Really, they were just heavy mixtures of alcohol, opium, coccaine, laxatives, and God knows what else that made you too drunk/stoned to notice you were sick. I know because I collect 1800s bottles. I got names like 'H. W. Thatcher's Liver Pills' 'Swamp Root Extract' 'Rubifoam for the Teeth'. I even got one that says 'Dr. True's Family Laxative Worm Expeller'.
