Betty Buckley should have received the Grammy Award for her signature song "Memory!' She also should have received the Grammy Award for the song Over You from the movie Tender Mercies! She also should have received the Grammy Award for "As If We Never Said Goodbye!" Best Desmond ever!

I wouldn't go that far; however, she has a fine, trained voice that certainly served her well.

The very pretty and extremely talented actress, singer dancer, and performer Betty Buckley is excellent! Betty Buckley the best and the one and only Grizabella from Cats! Betty Buckley received the Tony Award for her brilliant portrayal of Grizabella the glamourous cat! Betty Buckley should have received the Tony Award for Best actress in the Broadway Musical for Sunset Boulevard! I was born in the very late fall of 1978. I saw Betty in Hello, Dolly in Louisville Kentucky! She was Excellent! I have always loved Betty Buckley and always will! Betty Buckley at Carnegie Hall! Incredible and Wonderful! Thank you for posting and sharing this classic performance!

What a voice !I got to see her twice on Broadway,in Cats and Edwin Drood. The stunning power and resonance of her voice is unbelievable to hear "Live'. It just seems to soar through the air, cutting like a knife. I'll never forget that sound. Goosebumps !

I saw her in Sunset Blvd in the 90's. I grew up watching Eight is Enough and had no idea she had a great singing voice. Her performance as Desmond was flawless.

Amazing! I don't understand how anyone can find fault with her performance. It is easy to be critical when you are not the one on stage. I think she is an incredible singer/entertainer!

I feel for that conductor and orchestra. He's/they're desperately trying to keep up with Ms. Buckley's tendency (at least here) to throw out any semblance of consistent beat/rhythm as seen in the score. She takes so much liberty and infuses so much interpretation that the structure of the score is practically rewritten. In my opinion, she's gone too far. It sounds as if the whole thing could fall apart at any moment were it not for the herculean efforts of the musicians behind her. I understand dramatic pauses, stretching phrases, rubato, etc. But at some point, you cross a line, lose the plot as they say, and I think this is a good example of that.

Patrick Yaeger Interesting I feel like Patti LuPone is the opposite end of the spectrum and in the recordings I’ve heard of her singing this, I wish she’d take more liberties Love analyzing the different performances.
@fergusmurray1828
@fergusmurray1828 4 жыл бұрын
@@Thekatedelaney I think that might have to do with Patti using much higher keys in the show than Betty. Betty could have and wanted to use the same ones as Patti, but the lower keys used by Glenn became preferred by Andrew Lloyd Webber. As a result, I think Betty had an easier time singing the score and thus had more freedom vocally.

It is called emotion. A singer can sing perfectly and on time and that is good and forget about who the singer was..However, to move people you need to what Betty is doing..Guaranteed the people in that audience will remember her performance, and no one knows or cares about timing.

I think this is an incredibly ungenerous reading of Ms Buckley’s and the conductors talent and professionalism. If you watch the conductor in the background he is deftly leading the orchestra but following Betty’s cues, because they’ve rehearsed this before and he knows where she likes to pause/milk/etc. she is not making these choices randomly; they are working as a team to create dramatic moments worthy of a diva.

she sounds ok I think it has become fashionable to praise her. She is mostly talking her way through this. This score does not really require a great singer but a great actress. She sounds very off key and seems to be having a difficult time maintain g her key.

If you think that this score does not require a great singer but a great actress, you should rather watch the movie with Gloria Swanson, it will spare your ears. Post scriptum : they hear off-key,
