And without singing. In August 2006, ten years after she completed her Broadway run in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Sunset Boulevard," Betty Buckley returned to the role of Norma Desmond by headlining a one-night-only staged reading at the Hollywood Bowl of the original "Sunset" screenplay, with the accompaniment of John Mauceri and his orchestra playing the music that Franz Waxman had composed for the film's soundtrack. Douglas Sills as Joe, Len Cariou as Max, Conrad John Schuck as DeMille, and Tom McGowan as First AD.

That Waxman score sounds fantastic-I think people forget what an exceptionally well written script it really was. Her Norma is played with more vulnerability than I remember in the musical. This was a real treat - thank you Spiderwoman!

I'm so happy to see this! I was in this production, and it was a terrific experience. I got to play all the other female roles (Tom Costello played all the males) for a full week of rehearsal with just the director (Peter Hunt), Betty, and Len (before the full cast of "famous people" began officially rehearsing), and then once we were in regular rehearsals, I got to play Hedda Hopper for several days before Holland Taylor was able to join us. Then I went back to my regular ensemble track, playing the script supervisor (among others). You can hear me say my big line, "Look! It's Norma Desmond!" at the 4:20 mark. I was so nervous about it, because it had to be timed perfectly with the orchestral score. Memories! ❤️

Sorry, I made a mistake/misremembered - the line was actually, "Look! There's Norma Desmond!" (Huge difference, I know. But I'm persnickety like that. lol)

I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Betty a few years ago. She was pure class. It shows in her work! Loved this.

I actually feel sad that they didn’t do the musical version. They would’ve rocked this as much as they did with the original screenplay.

This wasn't the musical. This was a reading of the script from the original film. The film was not a musical

kzbin.info/www/bejne/paKpm4hqntaEsK8 This clip from the Huston-Wilson reading was from L.A., and to my knowledge there was no repeat in NY. Plus the Huston-Wilson version was not accompanied by the film score.
