Do you think the lyrics in Betty about James seeing her dancing with someone in the gym could be an allusion to the Don Mclean song American Pie. Would love to know what you think? The verse in American Pie is as follows: Well, I know that you're in love with him 'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym You both kicked off your shoes Man, I dig those rhythm and blues ... Also.. James "take several seats" 🤣🤣🤣

what if exile is when betty and james went back together and after years together (the voice of the song makes me think that they are older) I feel like exile is about a love that is toxic and it kind of makes sense that the love is toxic and like you say maybe james is a man child so their relationship is toxic

SS, another great interpretation. I do think Betty takes James back (as in Cardigan) but they break up again (leave me like a blood stain) leading to other songs on the album like The1, This is Me Trying (where I think Betty goes back to James in her desperation). and the finality Hoax. Just my thoughts. Also would be interesting to find out what lead to the high school (Betty) dancing incident? I don't think this album give a definite clue to that, your thoughts??

She was dancing with another guy bcz James doesnt really like attention and hates the crowd but that was her fave song and she wanted to dance

i do think that part of the story is missing with regards to the dance, i think that's intentional on part of taylor so we'll never know who was 'in the wrong' (if anyone) initially. i think they both hurt each other at the dance and it caused the foundation of their relationship to crumble a bit...like a first crack so it was more fragile and more prone to break

yes girl i'm nota big fan of james either. that apology was wack. and standing in front of betty's house in her cardigan was kinda manipulative. but i think the more mature he'll become, the more he'll learn (i hope)
