I remember seeing Kathryn Boule and Gary Beach (and Jane Connell, Norwood Smith and Kathy-Jo Kelly) in the First National company of ANNIE on its opening night in Toronto in 1978. I was just a kid, but it was a life-changing experience. That night, sitting there, I knew I had to persue a career in Musical Theatre (and I did!). Thank you for that night and for the inspiration it gave my life.

This is wonderful! I was born in 1978. Thank you for posting and sharing this rare footage! I knew Betty Hutton portrayed Miss Hannigan on Broadway in Annie. This is the first time I have ever seen or heard it!

Even though the video quality is poor, it is great to see a little more of the original set and costumes. Fond memories of being in a local version using the original professional Australian set and costumes. No subsequent version has surpassed the 2 treads and multiple sliding items 👏

Considering how low she'd fallen, with regard to drugs and homelessness (as she described in her autobiography), it's a wonder she was able to return to Broadway and perform with such verve.

I was in a show with Gary Beach once. What a musical talent that guy was. As for Hutton? She never learned to smooth herself out. As she aged she just amplified the crassness and the hyper exaggerated movements that made her an animated figure in the 40's. In this it just looks desperate and not fitting a woman of her age. Reminds me of when Lucille Ball was still trying to do the shtick that worked for her when she was young.

Thanks for this great video, I was curious if there were any from the earliest Annie productions. I don't fault Betty Hutton, she was funny, almost slapstick-style (she really threw a tantrum when she heard Annie'd be adopted) and if some say she wasn't the talent she had been, given her comeback I see it as a Broadway version of Dwight Gooden's Yankee comeback. (He did okay, even pitched a no-hitter, but you couldn't help but think of what might have been.) She wasn't very good. Betty Hutton's ability began to fade in the late 1950's and by the 60's she was pretty washed up. I remember when she was in ANNIE and everyone hoped she'd have the old Betty Hutton magic and that she'd have one helluva come back. Sadly - she just....didn't. Bless her heart, though. She gave it the old college try.
