Back around 2000 or so I got to see Between the Buried and Me play what I believe was their first show ever. I think it was in Raleigh, NC. Back then Tommy and Paul were in the band, but Blake, Dusty, and Dan hadn't joined yet. Me and my friends weren't there to see them, and didn't know who they were. But about a minute or two into their set we're like, "Dude. Who ARE these guys?" I'm glad to see they're still pushing boundaries.

I know everybody is up "Colors" butt and its a good album but this is the best BTBAM album hands down
@BassbaitGG
@BassbaitGG 10 жыл бұрын
Colors is better. The pacing of the album keeps you listening constantly, there's no musical breaks (besides viridian) that allow you to quit listening to it at any point, and the musical dynamics cause the next song to be anticipated (how Sun of Nothing builds up and climaxes at Ants of the Sky, making each new song it's own orgasm c;). The songs also don't have much uniformity, every song is completely distinguishable and almost sound as if each song was written by completely different musicians, but the album works very coherently. Prequel to the Sequel does not resemble Sun of Nothing at all, and neither resemble Ants of the Sky, etc, they are all full of impactful moments that are distinct and pave way perfectly for each other. Parallax 2 is standard BTBAM, they've sounded like it since Great Misdirect. Colors, on the other hand, they'll never make an album like that again.
@aaronchisholm4
@aaronchisholm4 10 жыл бұрын
BassbaitGG Opinions are opinions, but I think Parallax II is a more accessible album to like than Colors. It took me 5 years to actually like BTBAM. I played the hell out of their songs on Rock Band, but I couldn't actually just listen to their music. It wasn't until Parallax II that I could enjoy their music. Now I really like Colors and all their other albums, but Parallax is definitely a more cohesive and structured album for me, and I think that's why it's a better album.
@BassbaitGG
@BassbaitGG 10 жыл бұрын
Aaron Chisholm I disagree on the structure, I disagree on accessibility, and I disagree on it being better. Just read what I already said for structure and it being better, but in terms of accessibility, Colors has those moments like "feed me fear", "I'm floating towards the sun", "sleep on", etc, the sing along moments. Parallax 2 doesn't have that as much, since it's a concept album and doesn't have as overarching of a reach in that regards. Don't get me wrong I love the Parallax series but Colors is just much more important on most levels. Conceptually, Parallax is better but in almost every other way I'd say Colors wins.

It's okay man, I'm in the minority who thinks TGM was their best. And if it isn't their best technically, then it's still definitely my favorite. I just love the mood of that album, it's dark and mysterious, and so raw for a progressive album. I do love the Parallax series and would call it their most "accomplished" work, but there's something about TGM that completely hypnotizes me, catches my attention completely, and works up my emotions. Cheers!

@XxTRIPPINGxxGUITARxX
@XxTRIPPINGxxGUITARxX 9 жыл бұрын
Neville Allen II It's a six note scale that is made up entirely of a whole step in between each note from the root. For example: G A B C# D# F. You can play it over Dominant 7 chords to start experimenting with it. I recommend the Jazz Tutorials "4 exotic jazz scales..." video. Also, it's more of a "hit and run" scale, so use it wisely or else you'll hurt people's ears 😘.

All of us growing up as young musicians, hearing our favorite bands and seeing their greatness live, I've always dreamt of having a rig like some of these brilliant musicians. Racks, 4x cabs, the whole 9 yards. These rigs cost thousands of dollars, so it's always been more of a dream than a reality. Finally, my dream has come to fruition. That Synth stand that Tommy is rocking out on is an X series ultra mod Keyboard stand. That bad boy has 2 adjustable heights and no-slip grips on the feet. You read that right: 2 adjustable heights!!! Stomp around all you want and growl to your hearts' discontent: those keys are going NOWHERE. I see you guys commenting on the guitar muscianship and the spot on drumming, but why has nobody yet mentioned the methodical and dare I say calculated? way Tommy's keys are being presented. Gives me chills..

I think most people that listen to metal, and ESPECIALLY prog, don't appreciate keys unless they are forefront and shredding. If you listen to Porcupine Tree or Opeth, the keys are not the focus, they are used for ambience and atmosphere. It isn't flashy, so most people don't notice it. Which is sad, because if you listen with good speakers or headphones, you can hear some absolutely haunting sounds that complete the whole picture.

It's like classical music, someone just isn't familiarized with the structure, all the changes, the chord progressio, all the harmony itself and you have to dig it, so it takes a few listenings to understand and appreciate.

I think Blake is the drummer reincarnation of John Petrucci. The older he gets the better he plays, the longer his hair gets, and the more muscles he has.
@Posirep

Well...part of the reincarnation process is for the former to be dead...and I'm pretty sure Petrucci is not taking a dirt nap...lol

I think the same thing (other than not technically a "reincarnation" lol). They have VERY similar styles, are musical geniuses in their genre, and even look the same! I think that if BTBAM stays on this trend then he could be even better than Petrucci * gasp *
@ChristopherRoss.

InvisibleTeeth Nah, Petrucci is a Demi God; a human reborn (because no mere mortal could do the things he does). So logically, he would have had to die in order to be reborn. ;)

Ten years has past by, with laughter and tears. Do you remember when we went to the zoo, and that time we drank all the beers!!!! .................I promise to love you for 50 years more, even if you don't seem............. so hardcore!!!!.............Thank You Paul for doing Colors tab book almost 10 years ago, and the rest of you for making a smash record!!! You created another monster!!! Now days i'm swaggin on the dragon!! Kragen Lum and I are working on all my bad habits with guitar playing, And being the recovering alcoholic I am, i'm 2 years sober and never had more Love or appreciation for the beautiful things in life!!!!>..........Even though I haven't been down with most of the records after colors.......it still will live on.....maybe I will catch you for the 20 year anniversary tour of colors one day!!!!!!!!!! ..............do you guys remember Icon's last show in Buffalo......I was like 16 at the time and had mad hair.....but I was there!!!!! Thanks for the fist bump Briggs!!!!!! I FELT the POWER that day!!!........I actually walked out on selkies solo, that was the last song that night and went out for a smoke......and then you played Mordecai, and just as the solo kicked in while I was outside, fireworks started going off at the Bisons' stadium!!!! So I watched fireworks while listening to Mordecai solo!!!!......It was beautiful!!.......Peace

BTBAM really surprised me with this album. I thought they were sort of getting boring after Great Misdirect and Parallax 1, then Parallax 2 came out and holy shit. It's like they're a brand new band, it was one of my favourite albums of 2012, and thats saying a lot since that year had some major releases. They sorta took this prog thing and ran with it, the first song on their new album sounds awesome too. Look forward to these guys continuing on over the years.

Here we go, another genre argument. If it has breakdowns, screaming, singing and crazy riffs, it's core. That's kind of a rule of thumb.

I don't think I've ever gone so far from being repelled by a band's sound into being utterly addicted to it, floored by it, always needing more of it, than I did for BTBAM. Their skill and creativity are insane but I don't know how one would even go about composing a song like there... Were do you even start? I finally picked this particular album up on vinyl this week, and having never learned the lyrics reading along with liner notes (Which are completely psychotic by the way, there are unperformed "lyrics" all over the album that are intended for you to read along with), it's again elevated itself to a new level for me. Digging graves... Deeper graves... *shivers* These guys are some real artist's artists.
