As an old timer, I can definitely hear the influences of: Yes, Zappa , mahavishnu orchestra, Patrick Moraz and of course the bass lines , Jaco Pastorius. My son recommended this band, and Im hooked! love it!

I envy of your son. Mine is not so bad though. Still in hard rock heavy stuff, but at his age 23 I was a big Rush Yes Kansas Gentle Giant etc fan. Maybe later. I started all with him anyway.

Nobody particulary needs vocals (hopefully), but since Richard Henshall pulled off some fucking amazing vocal stuff on the mountain (don't know how much Ross contributed to the arrangement) and Affinity was pretty lacking in that department, I wouldn't be mad about, if there weresome sweet vocals. It's amazing neither the less.

Kein Name true that, Henshall writes some awesome vocal melodies, mostly in The Mountain and Aquarius, and I agree with you Affinty is not the best in vocal melodies, except in The Architect, the vocals are one of Haken's best, so as the song itself IMO

I understand the objection to this. It's lifeless. Scant melody. It's a musical magic act. Same (and only) gripe I've had with some of Dream Theater's material. But it certainly showcases their chops, which is likely the point. How often would I casually listen to it? Never, won't be buying it. As great as the playing is. Oh, and I dig haken and btbam.

Sounds like they put all jazzy parts of Dream Theater in one song and developed it further. I guess the guitarist has got a John Petrucci Poster over his bed :-). But I must say they do an amazing Job. I must check out more of thier music. Great Job Guys!!!

You can hear Henshall chasing a little bit more of what he was experimenting on the albums Aquarius and Visions by Haken. But you also hear quite a bit of Dan's influence.
