I was fortunate enough to be one of the first people to hear this live, at a show at the Pound SF in 2005, they played two songs from the upcoming Alaska album and this was one of them. At the time the sweeps in the solo were truly unprecedented in metal music, I couldn't even comprehend what I was hearing! I got kicked in the face and broke my nose at that show, wearing a freshly purchased BTBAM Silent Circus shirt (the one with the double kick pedals on it) and I bled all over it, but fortunately it was black, along with all my other clothes lol. Oh how I miss those days, simpler times.

That's because Dragonforce is garbage and power metal in itself is pretty lame and terrible
@daltonkraft42413 жыл бұрын
Similar story. I was 16 and went for Norma Jean in a fairly small venue and my group staked out very close on the left and when btbam was setting up I thought Paul was a tech/roadie because he didn't look like a metal guitarist. Welp, got my face melted by Selkies from only a couple feet away and they've been a constant in my life since.
@OmegaSoypreme2 жыл бұрын
I had basically the same experience when I saw Dragonforce live around that same time. Drunken slopfest is the perfect way to describe it. They were awful, and real shitty towards the crowd. We left after just a few songs, and I stopped listening to them all together. Funnily enough, they were performing at the same pub at which I saw BtBaM just a few years later, which turned out to be one of the best live shows I've ever seen. So I guess it wasn't the venue! In Dragonforce's defence, they are way better these days. The new singer is vastly more talented. And judging by their much shorter songs they don't come across as such self indulgent dickheads anymore. I imagine back then they just really high on their recent fire and flames hype.

I saw them right after this album came out here in in Baltimore they were playing with The Dillinger escape Plan and DJ Flashbulb opened for them. It was epic. I was there for Dillinger, but hearing BTBAM live made me an instant fan. Full disclosure, Dillinger was still the show stopper, and probably the most intense metal band I've ever seen live. Baltimore is Greg's hometown, and he breathed fire despite it being banned recently prior. The un-burnt excess liquid from his mouth literally misted onto my face, and at 17 it was a real thrill.

I would like to think about the song in its literal sense. A man meets a mermaid(selkie) in human form. They fall in love. And she realizes the corruption of man. She falls in love with that man but can only stay on land for so long. Then they have to say goodbye before she has to go back to the sea. It’s a very darker version of little mermaid lol. And the solo at the end is their goodbye. That’s my interpretation
