Yesss, I was waiting for this. Please react to the rest of her solo discography: • Revelacion Spanish ep • Droplets: I want you to Know, We don’t Talk Anymore, Trust Nobody, It Ain’t me, Only You, Kill em with Kindness acoustic, Bad Liar, Fetish, Wolves, Back to You, Taki Taki, I can’t Get Enough, Anxiety, Ice Cream, Past Life, 999, & Let Somebody Go. She also has a few albums with Hollywood records (Kiss & Tell, A Year Without Rain, When the Sun Goes Down, Stars Dance, & For You ep), they are very much Disney sounding albums and she had no creative control but I think you should still check them out to see how much she’s evolved in her music career.

"Revival" was a big game changer in Selena's career, she was going through a lot of things, a lot of problems and dealing with a lot and she was only 23 at the time, but it was a time where she was able to be more open and creative in her songs (as on the previous album "Stars Dance" she was on another label and didn't have as much freedom to do what she wanted). She matured very fast and early, and she is much more vulnerable in this album than in "Rare". I personally think SG2 (as she calls the "Rare" album), is a more mature album, lyrically speaking, and sonically speaking too, and even in the construction of the album, song orders. I think she found her sound there, what suits her. In the "Revival" era she had not yet suffered the kidney transplant surgery that almost took her life, nor the consequences of having an autoimmune disease, so she was way more confident with her vocals, her live performances, her songs and albums. The disease, the media and everything she went through, ended up disseminating her confidence, self-esteem, etc. But I'm sure she is getting better every day and at SG3 she will come back with everything.

the reason her vocals may seem a little stronger on this album because she has lupus, an autoimmune disease, which can affect the vocal chords, it probably took it's toll a little bit over time. but I still love Rare.

Even though Rare came out 5 years after Revival, a lot of people prefer Revival, but to fully understand why, you have to know a bit about the 5-year gap between Revival and Rare. Rare was supposed to come out 2017 with a different tracklist. That version of the album would've been more shady, vulnerable, and heartbroken. She released "Bad Liar", and "Fetish" in 2017 which were supposed to be the first 2 singles from the album and are considered her artistic peak. After releasing Fetish, she had her kidney transplant and was dealing with major depression from 2017-2018, and because of that, she was in a different mindset and didn't want Rare to be shady, dark, and heartbroken anymore, so she scrapped the rollout, release, and tracklist and did a lot of new positive and uplifting songs from 2018-2019 instead, so most of the Rare tracklist you see in the final version are songs she did in 2018-2019. A lot of people didn't like Rare because they were expecting her to tell her truth with her relationship drama in those 5 years and health issues. They were also expecting it to be her artistic peak because of her artistry with Bad Liar and Fetish. Instead, she only chose to tell her truth in Lose You To Love Me and made the rest of the album about healing and being in a good place. It's just a matter of what Selena needed vs. what everyone was expecting/wanting. Selena needed an album that would uplift her and turn her 5 years of suffering into a beautiful album about her being able to love herself. Fans and the public on the other hand wanted an album where she talked about her struggles during those 5 years instead. I genuinely believe a lot more people would've appreciated the healing album that "Rare" is, had we also had the 2017 album that would've been filled with heartbreak because we just needed to hear the suffering album before we could even begin to appreciate the healing album, but that's not what Selena wanted to release. Also, because she's "at peace" with Rare, she doesn't really explore her voice sonically and stays at a "comfortable" level. As you heard, she didn't really do much belting nor experiment with her voice in Rare in contrast to Revival where she belts and experiments a lot with her voice, so that's a reason why people prefer Revival. The songs in Rare are much more cohesive than Revival, but Revival's songs are much more stand-alone which is another reason why some people like Revival more. Even Selena herself knows that people weren't as fully satisfied with Rare so she's going to be going in a different direction with her next album so that'll be interesting to see since even she herself stated that Rare was her in her "comfort-area" and that she wanted to do something different with the next album.
@giuliantoneIIi3 жыл бұрын
It is such a shame that people criticised Rare so much, honestly the more I listen to it the more I love it. I think Revival is great, but it is such an easier album to love, imo, whilst Rare you have to understand a bit more to really appreciate it

When she did the interview where she said she was thinking about quitting music, she said that because when she released Lose You To Love Me and then her Rare album which she felt like was the best music she had ever released, it still felt like it wasn't "good enough" for some people. She just felt like at that point, it was hard for her to gain the respect she wanted in the music industry, as if she needed to "prove herself" even though she's been in the industry for 10+ years. She loves making music, but of course, I mean anyone would want to be respected in any field they're in. She could just ignore it but she's very much a people pleaser. She later did another interview after news broke out about her possibly quitting, and said she wasn't quitting and doesn't think she will ever stop making music. She just felt a bit frustrated. She said this specifically in to clarify... *"I'm not saying I want a Grammy. I just feel like I'm doing the best I can, and it's all about me. Sometimes, that can really get to me."* With the next album, she wants to go a different path from Rare. She's still incredibly proud of Rare of course, but she says she wants to make it different. Based on the songs that have been registered and the producers she's been working with, it seems like the direction of her next album will be going a very trap/rnb/pop route. It could be something completely different though since at one point in 2018, we thought Rare would be a Christian pop album, but regardless, it's really interesting.
@neyshanichole2062 Жыл бұрын
Where do I go to look at what songs have been registered?

i think revival is a fan favourite because it's got such standout songs and great vocal delivery, and it was a big departure lyrically from her previous work, but i think rare is more cohesive thematically and has stronger lyrics overall. both albums are so special and talk about pain and healing in beautiful ways, and while she doesn't have the strongest voice to belt etc., she conveys emotions in such a special way
@alexisgarciavevo3 жыл бұрын
Revival was never a flop. Selena brings you into her true experiences in her life. When Revival came out, I was so obsessed with it. It has so many great songs, but as I've grown with Selena *she's one yr older than me* I really fell in love with Rare. It's mature and beautifully produced. As I've matured with her, her Rare album is, at my age now, more relatable. I think that's the issue with her fan base, they lowkey haven't grown or a lot are still young. So much of her stan fan base hate every little thing she does unless it's shady or "Bad Bitch" vibes and it's honestly weird. Revelación was and is absolutely a beautiful ep that I am in love with. As a proud Mexican, her tapping into her Mexican culture and roots really made me happy. Of course her fan base failed her again, but outside of stan Twitter, the EP is greatly appreciated by the world. I highly recommend it. Thank you for having a great reaction to both albums and being awesome in general 👏❤

She is also a woman with such a big vision and a woman with a cause. She is an big advocate for Mental Health, her whole Brand Rare Beauty revolves around that. She advocates against Hate Mongering, a very big advocate of Black Lives Matter and I have just barely scratched the surface. She is a QUEEN. Her musical talent is very underrated. She deserves so much more.

I get soooo exited when I hear you mention Gaga. Connecting Camouflage to Gagas sound is one of the reasons you have my endless support. You just get it. You understand music so well and you help me understand things I've heard so many times even better on your 1st listen. Incredibly exited for you to watch A Star Is Born and start your Gaga journey. I recommend Selenas cooking show on Hbo as well. Selena+Chef is pure joy to watch.

As a SelenaG fan I think Rare is her best album and my favorite too, revival is good and is the album that everybody loves because it's not that hard to listen to and more mainstream but as a fan Rare is everything, especially because se had full control over it.

I'm not sure if someone has already commented, but her Spanish ep is worth listening to. Its called "Revelación", it came out in 2021 making it her most recent larger musical work

I get so emotionnal when you say you didn't hear that voice in Rare, because you did, Selena went through some really tough times with her health and it changed her, not just physically or mentally, Revival is so emotional to me, because that voice is Selena, even though Rare is amazing I find that Revival reaches the heart differently, Selena is a real gem and this album just reminds us where she comes from and what she had to go through at a very young age. She is a great artist and she never stops impressing us.

you probably know those songs because this era was SO popular, it played so much on the radio and Selena performed those songs a lot too. Even my mom knows the most popular ones because it always played on the radio when she was driving me to school lol

Perfect just kills me everytime I hear it. The vocals are just beautiful I can hear the pain in her voice. I could not listen to that song for a really long time because it came out around the time I was cheated on. And the fact that it was so real was just so powerful. I think it’s just a crazy song. So relatable
