Somewhere between 2010-15 Selena Gomez got the news that she’s diagnosed with lupus, which affected her energy to sing and dance on stage. It’s so sad to watch the rise of her music career but then realize she might not be able to sing on stage as much anymore or go on tour because she has to stay home and be monitored for her condition constantly to make sure she stays healthy and alive.

I remember when I went to see her live on tour, she doesn’t have the “strongest “ or I guess the best voice but god her show was outstanding. She was singing and it was good, but her performance and her connection with the audience is absolutely unmatched. I will always stand by that, she was truly giving it her all and it made her tour such an experience

Im loving this series and as a Selenator thanks for being nice to my girl. After her lupus diagnosis she hasn’t been performing much, cause she doesn’t have the physical energy for it, and even after all that evolution, she’s had some bad moments recently (in the last 4 or 5 years) due to being really nervous or not being well physically. But she did evolve so much and just listening to her newer songs you can hear the difference, and how she found herself in her lower register (which I love so much more). Sabrina Carpenter started her singing career at around the same age Selena did, and she’s 24 now and she has a very rich tone that I think you would love to analyze.

Or maybe it's not lupus and it's her having only one kidney that's making her tired and low on energy? Sel doesn't have lupus that pr was debunked. People on lupus don't drink leisurely. She's an alcoholic at the very least. But you know many celebrities in that industry are. I wouldn't even judge her for it. Idk why her team fights so hard to hide her very public problems when she literally dated Justin who was doing a lot during his early adulthood.

As a fan from what i picked on Selena´s biggest problems are her lack of confidence in her singing and also her problem with breath control which might be caused by her lungs being weaken by lupus and never receiving a good guidance in finding her voice. In her early days it´s clear to me Selena didn´t had much experience with singing. Originally Selena didn´t want to be a singer, she just wanted to be an actress but Disney saw how marketable she is and pushed her into singing anyway even when she wasn´t ready for it. With lack of work and experience in her voice + songs that weren´t suitable for her voice she had no choice but to start improvising which resulted picking up some pretty bad vocal habits that affected her for the rest of her career basically. Selena has been working with vocal coach and improved but didn´t get rid of most bad vocal habits. Her vocal coach was her friend which might be the reason behind it. Selena needed someone who would be little hard on her and really pushed her into right direction. Years went by and constant bullying from public for her singing abilities resulted in her completely losing all her confidence. From the way Selena talked about herself it looks she kinda lost all hope of getting better and be a good singer, which is incredibly sad and such a shame because she has beautiful voice and you can see she honestly tried her best to improve. Her vocal strengths include: beautiful sweet and slightly smoky tone, strong easily accessible lower register, falsetto and soft airy head voice, natural emotiveness in her voice and also some basic agility and vocal dynamics control. The biggest issue for her seems to be transfer more power into her chest voice which results in squeezing, tension, nasality, overpushing and pitch problems. What should´ve been done was to focus on her strengths, slowly get rid of all bad habits and create a strong foundation that we can build on more skills. Selena´s early music focused primarily on her issues. Pop-rock and also very energetic Pop and EDM songs don´t seem to be very suitable for her voice. More laid back and chill sounds like RnB, pop-folk and alternative pop seems to be much more appropriate and would let her voice truly shine.

Tbh I feel like this is just a long way of saying she never had any singing talent. She had great written songs and a workable voice, I like alot of her songs and the productions behind them but I never listened them for her voice. Anyone could sing those songs and I probably would’ve like them. You’re right that she was and still is extremely marketable.

As much as people want to dogpile on Selena's vocal abilities, you can't deny that her voice is unique and she was heading somewhere glorious with how she evolved it during the Revival and Droplets era. Songs like Perfect and Bad Liar are so uniquely suited and catered for Selena's voice and I genuinely can't imagine anyone else singing those songs without the entire vibe being completely different. I think that her voice is unique in that it can pretty much work with any genre, but I will agree with you that in terms of her own personal vocal-potential, it won't be reached from high-energy pop/EDM/poprock songs. As fun and as successful as pop is, I think that it won't do much for her at this point, vocally. Pop is just very limiting in its allowance for her to utilize the uniqueness of her voice to its fullest potential. She's a pop girl and is known for making catchy pop hits, so I understand why she sticks to it, especially since she has a very gifted ear for hits, but I do agree that if Selena took a risk in the future with her music direction, it could have a huge payoff. I personally really do think it's time for her to either do an indie folk/alternative album like Folklore, or fully dip into an R&B era. Songs like Mirrorball, Cardigan, and This is Me Trying would compliment her voice very much. As for R&B, I personally feel like her R&B/R&B-inspired songs have suited and explored her vocals the most out of all the genres she's dipped into the past decade. Songs like Good For You, Perfect, and Crowded Room really do show a new side to her voice and vocal-potential, so I really do think that it's time for a change.

Demi, Selena and Miley had talent early but Disney pushed them to perform and record on such a brutal schedule between filming their shows and all the PR touring that they all developed some bad habits to just make it through. Demi and Selena seemed to make the corrections after leaving Disney before permanent damage, but Miley did have to get surgery to correct the damage. I found Demi's early voice rather screamy and unpleasant but developed a much more controlled power as she got older.

The black and white clip is my favorite performance she did. She was crying during it Such a powerful moment. I wonder how mental health plays a part in how you sing. Taylor swift said she wouldn’t expand her ribs to breathe correctly because of fat shaming, being exhausted or living up to “Disney” status/ sound or singing a song that you don’t believe in. Love your videos because you don’t just just describe the mechanics of singing. Love it.

I think Selena did an interview about the collab with Coldplay. If I remember correctly, she said that was the first time she really felt like a singer. She was nervous because before that people really trashed her singing. She said Chris made her really comfortable when recording the song together and that she truly felt like a singer then. I felt so bad for her because so many people bullied her about her singing. I think she said before that collab, she was thinking of never singing again and just focus on acting. She ended up hating her own voice after having everyone tell her she sucked. I personally thought her collab was a really beautiful performance by both her and Chris. She sounded fantastic and Princess-y lol. Also, she ended up being diagnosed with Lupus in her late teens, early 20’s, I believe. That messed with her voice as well.

25:22 Im pretty sure she was working with Stevie Mackey on her voice during those clips. I remember those being videos from her lessons. 20:38 her UNICEF acoustic concert is the BEST she sounded especially around that time. And she’s always sounded better when covering other songs and I 100% believe it all comes down to confidence. When she’s relaxed, confident she sounds so good!! During that whole concert she looked so chill and her voice reflected that. But on televised performances she usually doesn’t sound as good due to nerves and how much hate she’s gotten for her vocals :( I’ve been a fan of hers since 2008 so I’m super proud of her evolution.

i dont think it was only the nervousness there... she has lupus, a condition that could kill her if not contantly monitored and controlled, and it, basically, is her immune system making her get tired really really fast and effing up all her joints and muscles... all the medicine just complicates more and more all of the other systems just so she can stay alive, and also, she can´t get sunlight, which just cooperates for her to not go on live shows anymore. its really sad to think about giving up on something you enjoy, so i think its really impressive that she still can be happy

Also, having to pee when nervous is normal! Your body is trying to empty itself so that it doesn't have to carry as much when you're running away from lions and tigers and bears, oh my. Its the same reason we feel nauseous. The body wants to throw up the food cuz digestion takes energy and blood flow you need to run away and food is lowkey heavy.

I love the idea for this series. What a great way to help people identify their own tendencies towards something and show how you can progress out of those tendencies. As for Selena- I am a bit older so never really watched her Disney shows or listened to her music so came into this pretty “blind”. I imagine that she was quite influenced by the sounds of 90’s music which often had a tighter sound (thinking of Avril Lavigne off the top of my head). I think that sound was especially prevalent for Alto singers so she was likely, at such a young age, working to find that sound and in turn building a bit of a bad habit in her young voice that now stays with her and needs some fairly constant unlearning. She sounds wonderful, and as someone with a light airy voice (who struggles to connect to the chest), I am a bit jealous of the natural depth she has in her voice.

I love this series! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, it's so interesting and you are always so sweet and kind ❤ If you want to try a male singer, you could try to watch the vocal evolution of Luke Hemmings from 5 Seconds of Summer, he is so underrated but his voice is beautiful and has improved so much!

I wish u got to see more of her performances from 2015/2016 her confidence and stage presence were unmatched. She knew she was a bad bitch. She had already been diagnosed with lupus by that point but that didn’t stop her or lower her confidence. She did have to end up cancelling her revival tour halfway through in 2016 due to her health declining. In early 2017 she had her kidney transplant. Since then shes taken a step back & focused on her health a lot more. She also seems so have lost some of her confidence, I believe with the lupus affecting her voice and having already been somewhat insecure about it. I also think she’s taken a step back from music because I don’t think her heart is in it as much as it used to be. I think Disney pushed her in that direction and her heart wasn’t fully in it yet and she didn’t have the confidence so she asked to do music with a band and so Selena Gomez & the scene was born. And now with all of her health issues and not wanting the kind of attention being a pop star gives her she’s taken a step back and puts a lot of time between her albums, but she acknowledges it and gives us new songs and projects here and there but now it’s only when she’s up for it. She puts most of her focus into philanthropy and her cosmetics company rare beauty and lately has been doing more acting which I’m living for. Loving the longer videos. Keep up the good work.

I really like these longer videos! I sang in school and like to sing for fun, but I never had any “formal” singing lessons. I’m told I sound good, so I enjoy hearing more of the mechanics on how to sound good, better, best! Thanks for all your work Hannah!

I love you rephrasing "lipsyncing" to "singing with support from pre recorded vocals" 🥲 very gracious of you
@gokcenakdag8189
@gokcenakdag8189 2 ай бұрын
They're not the same. Lipsyncing means you dont sing at all you just move your lips. Selena does sing , just not the high notes those are prerecorded thats what she meant

I really enjoy you breaking all of these clips down! I would love to watch more videos of you doing this. Also idk if you have watched/reacted to some of those more classic Disney Channel movies that came out in the early 2000s, but those could be fun to watch and react to

Definitely just used your code for Scentbird!! I'm also not a signature scent girly so I'm super excited to try some new ones! Me and Selena are also only 2 months apart in age so this video was FULL of so much nostalgia!!!! I LOVE these videos and would LOVE one on Olivia Rodrigo! Other artist ideas are Billie Eilish, Ben Platt, Chappell Roan, Harry Styles, Jewel, Reese Witherspoon, Katy Perry, and I could go on, lol! Also! Do you offer virtual voice lessons? If not, how do you recommend finding a good vocal coach in my area? It's been around 4 years since I've been in lessons and I'm in dire need, lol! Sending all the love

I love these longer vids. I have a long commute from work and listening to these is a really nice filler for that. I have a list of people that would be great for this series: Miley Cyrus Demi Levato Ariana Grande Nick Jonas / Joe Jonas (could be a cool combo video) Justin Timberlake There’s probably plenty more, but these would be awesome! Love all your videos!
