There's a melting, honeyed, blending Rossinian beauty here I didn't get from Joan and Marilyn at the Metropolitan. . DON'T COME AFTER ME!!!!

I have often said when listening to a piece such as this it can become a very subjective affair and this would be one of those cases, I would to go and find the Sutherland/Horne recording and compare, even without doing that I might have to agree about Joan, Marilyn has always been one of my favorite mezzos so am a little surprised, but as I say it's subjective, cheers.

@@edwardcaulfield67 I consider Horne among the most overrated singers of all times, opinions... absolutely not even close to dame Joan's level

@@LohengrinO interesting I put it the other way around, what put me off Joan was her mushy sound often spoken about, she did at time produce some beautiful notes, some you can listen to on here, but she still wouldnt be my number one, sorry, cheers..

Somehow being a massive fan of both ladies, I have never heard this before! Two totally dedicated artists, singing actresses through and through. Hearing Beverly’s shimmering tones against Shirley’s cavernous chest voice makes my day. Two prides of America singing Rossini with upmost style

I am a huge fan of this trio and recently the Brownlee-Spyres SPECTACULAR version (end link) was uploaded in youtube so I added the above to my already other two posted versions (Rebeka's and Anderson's)... and since I think this Trio is a Divine Rossini moment, another one is coming in the future

Thanks for finding this. Maometto II was later reworked by Rossini for Paris as the Siege of Corinth. The latter was ostensibly the vehicle used by Sills for her MET debut, but the version performed at the MET evidently used elements from both operas. I believe Maometto II/Siege was also used for her La Scala debut (?)

@@LohengrinOThe difference is there's a human being in the sound of Verrett, Horne sounds like a sound producing machine. Both Sills and Verrett have the artistic cry of an actual feeling human being, soulful, dramatic. Horne and Sutherland were more singing machines. True, there were beautiful tones throughout but it's very noticeable when listening to the difference.
