Could anything in life be more beautiful than the way she sings this? She was really other worldly when she was singing. She knew how to break your heart and put it back together again.

What an absolutely perfect description of Beverly's singing!

When she was good, i mean THIS good, she was the best. God, this is a unique performance. That child-like quality she retained till the end, with a perfect voice and breath control... The stratospheric notes all in exact, exquisite tuning, like a plaintive violin solo in a clear moonlit night... I saw her in '69 or '70 in Los Angeles, in La Traviata, with Domingo. Almost as good.

Add to that a controlled vibrato! I saw her late in her career, the voice had taken a bit of a strident quality, but omg, how she sang! She was one of those who could “Project’” a pianissimo in a way that it seemed to emanate just from beside your ear.

Much of the beauty lies in the emotions and feelings she puts into her singing. It is not necessary to understand each and every word she sings - the way she sings it tells the story.

*Beverly Sills' Musical "Geneaology"* *Manuel Garcia I* taught his three children, Maria Malibran, Pauline Viardot, and *Manuel Garcia II.* *Manuel Garcia II* invented the Laryngoscope; he authored books of vocal exercises, and taught *Mathilde Marchesi, née Graumann,* who worked as his assistant in vocal pedegogy. *Mathilde Marchesi* taught Emma Calvé, Emma Eames, Dame Nellie Melba, and *Estelle Liebling.* *Estelle Liebling* taught, among many others, Beverly Sills. For Beverly Sills' entire career, Estelle Liebling was Beverly Sills' only teacher, from the time Ms Sills was 7 years old until Ms Liebling passed away in 1970. AN UNBROKEN CHAIN FROM THE TRUE GOLDEN AGE OF BEL CANTO!

From the February 2, 1970 performance of La Fille du Regiment performed in french for the American Opera Society in New York. Roland Gagnon conducted. It's one of Sills' top 10 live performances. Look for it on KZbin.

I really adored Sills, and saw her many times in New York. In fact, my very first opera was one of the three queens (I didn’t save the program, but I think it was Anna Bolena). Vocally, she remained great till about 1977. I saw her in the English version of Daughter. Sutherland said that Il faut partir was “a nasty little aria” because the public’s ears were still ringing from the tenor’s high-Cs just before!

Is this from a full recording of La fille? Or just a recital? In case its the full opera can you provide the info for me to look for it? Thanks for everything, Lohengrin 🫂💞✨

There is a recording of Sills in this opera from the late 60s conducted by Roland Gagnon that is very good. I can’t tell if this clip is from this performance or not.

Hello, this is from a full live recording of La fille du Regiment on the label Opera d'Oro. Yes, its the one conducted by Roland Gagnon.

This is the Feb. 13, 1970 performance from Carnegie Hall and was Sills' first performance in the role (this live recording has often been mislabeled as from 1969). The complete performance can be heard on KZbin here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/joWnoGipo9Ssqtk (it's also incorrectly labeled 1969 in the main title).
