The pre-war model M Bechstein is a favourite of ours. However this one has suffered from severe moth damage and it's unlikely for us to be able to buy, restore it and make a profit.

A good point to realize is that moth lava do require some humidity and moisture to survive and I'm guessing that piano has been stored in a damp environment.

Bechsteins are wonderful and I'd always go for a Bechstein than other brands. Underrated and in my opinion as a musician always worth spending on a Bechstein as much as it takes. Respond well also to unequal temperament tunings. Even in this condition one can hear how beautiful this instrument is. Moth - buy a couple of blu loo blocks, unwrap and keep in their plastic trays. Moths don't like them and don't trouble the instrument. This tip was given to me by my technician mentor.

@@RobertsPianos Thanks. Bechstein should be appreciated more. Put a Bechstein and a Yamaha side by side, possibly as a comparison in the same not-Steinway price bracket, and people might go for the black gloss of a Yamaha. But the Bechstein is a more musical sound. Bechstein sounds like a piano whereas a Yamaha needs work to make it happy. Even with moth, this instrument is a creamy sound naturally. In contrast kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWaVhH17nL5lj7c is a Yamaha which needed "magic" to get it to sound creamy. Even with magic, the Yamaha will want to revert to it being its normal self. Forget the moth, in a blind test which instrument would one really prefer? People should be brought into a piano showroom blindfolded.

Wow-- here's a problem i haven't considered before; thank you for sharing it here. What a lot of damage can be done by small, silent stalkers! 🦋 Excellent video, as always 🎹 and a very Happy Easter to all 👑✝️🕊️🌼

What a nightmare, it must have driven them crazy, and the whole problem was probably this piano. I think awareness and early intervention would be best. Such as a card or small plaque accompanying pianos advising that if moths are observed in the location of the piano persistently, the piano MUST be serviced and some kind of extermination executed. In the USA we have very inexpensive very thin huge plastic sheets called drop cloths, meant for painting but which can be for example 20ftx12ft (6m x 4m) and with a little tape a couple of them can be used to seal around a grand piano in minutes, just taped tightly around the base of the legs etc, without lifting anything. And some kind of insect fumigation could be used easily inside that.

When you said the tone was beter than a modern Yamaha were you referring to the Yamaha CX Series Yamaha SX Series or Yamaha CF Series?🎹🎶

I've just tried very mint conditioned S4 and CFIIIS, there is no exception and still much brighter than any Germany brands. (good for pop or Jazz though.)

@@ambiva by modern Yamahas I mean the newer models. The models you mentioned already have binn discontinued for over 10 years or so🎹🎶

I bought a 1878 Bechstein in similar overall condition for as little as $2000. Investing about $10,000 in full restoration. Will see what happens)
