Hi, I'm Nick and I've been living in the Algarve for over 20 years. Today my daughter, Isabella, and I discover a section of the EN2, an old road that was commissioned 77 years ago and is now the longest road in Europe and one of three roads in the world that cross entire countries.
Great restaurants en route:
➣A Tia Bia - Barranco do Velho
goo.gl/maps/4uQkoiz21rTXPiAC8
➣Casa dos Presuntos - Cortelha
goo.gl/maps/LrjJ1V9EgvP8WwUDA
➣Tasquinha o medronho - Almodôvar

I can help you!

Last november my family and I went down to the Algarve for the second time, but this time we decided to avoid the highway, partly because it’s boring and partly because the tools are too expensive. We loved the experience! Thankyou for this video! I checked it here to choose which road I was gonna take back in november but didn’t find anything. No doubt this video is going to be of great value for those who hate highways like me!

Absolutely wonderful video! 1. Being a civil/traffic engineer, I love your historic road references between US, PT and Argentina! 2. I commend you for your daughter’s command of the English language. Being of Italian-descent, I struggled to have my 2 loving kids speak or understand Italian. Extremely difficult when living in US and married to an English-only spouse. Parabens! Love to know how she learned English (future video?). 3. Your daughter also appears to be very level-headed. Does she take after her mom? 🤣 🤣 4. I thought you only see motorcycles on weekends in California. 😁 5. Great advice to take life slowly and enjoy PT. Looking forward to the day when we move (hopefully) to PT. 6. Finally, great idea to do videos on your drive “up north.” Looking forward to it. All the best. 👍🏻

Oh yeah. My first taste of sopa da pedra was on a trip from Lisbon to the Algarve. We stopped in a roadside café in Almerim. The whole journey took 4.5 hours back then. Whenever Ive done it since, it's 1.5 hours on the highway at a cost of something like €25 in tolls (possibly more now!)

Sorry, Nick - Route 66 in the US started in Chicago and ended in Santa Monica California. It was almost 4,000 km long but now is a memory, having been cut up by "development". You could have shown the Bridge over the river Vascão, which is the border between the Algarve and Alentejo. 5 km ahead is the first town on the EN2, in Alentejo, Dogueno, KM 675, where my mother was born and currently lives and where I go regularly. Just to say Almodovar has a great little museum that contains some very interesting ancient stones with what is described as the oldest language in Europe engraved on them ( i think ? ) We visited after reading Peter Dougherty's book Atlantis and the Silver city ( Silves) His research and ideas about Silves being the old capitol of Atlantis before the 9BC earthquake and Tsunami washed everything away into the Atlantic. A fantastic read and a museum worth visiting

You have to be very careful when you say there's only 3 roads going across a country unless you've done lots of homework. For example New Zealand has its highway 1 which goes from the very top of the country to the very bottom and crosses both main islands with a distance of 2006km. Even if you take just the South Island, that's 932km.
