I spent a year in the Mekong Delta, wearing the green and a member of the "gun club." A few things on your list keep me away from the Philippines (even though my wife is from Manila). The heat, the noise, the filth, and the poverty. Never mind, the volcanos, typhoons and earthquakes. The 10PM curfew on Karoke is a step in the right direction, but they seriously need a (lack of a) muffler noise ordinance for motorbikes. Yeah, I live in a quiet place in the mountains of Pennsylvania, and I'm not leaving. But Hey Scotty, I gotta tell ya, I do enjoy your videos.

Hahaha. Great list. I carried a bottle of Heinz ketchup with me in my bag when I went to fast food places. Fries and banana ketchup doesn't cut it, imo. This was in Makati and the rest of metro Manila. If you visit a hospital, you have to pay for each procedure _before_ it's performed. You'll queue a lot, even at places like Makati Medical Centre. Food you're accustomed is prepared and/or cooked differently for local tastes. Pancake House's pancakes and waffles are too sweet. So too is Jollibee's spaghetti. That said, foreign restaurants tend to be very good to excellent and affordable. Download books, but if you're still constrained by the bandwidth. Enrol in a culinary school and learn to cook. Easy to find in cities. You have many hours to kill everyday, don't you? Might as well spend some of those hours preparing meals you like. Get earplugs. Not the foam ones. Get the wax ones that form to your ear canals. Bonus: prevent ingress by insects too.

I fascinated with the whole Philippines and expat thing about a year and a half ago. Not because I'm looking for a girl, but the idea of having more money left at the end of the month. I grew up on an island in Hawaii and lived there until I retired. I'm in Virginia now and have a much more affordable life here than Hawaii. I am not a big fan of beaches, jungles and super hot weather. Virginia has very hot and humid summers, but with a new HVAC system and solar electricity, I can excape the heat or the cold in winter and not worry about burning too much electricity. Plus, I'm close to mountains and forests here. Plenty of beaches if I really want to go. Plus I like America and there are enough places to travel to that can occupy the rest of my life. I've watched the appeal of the Philippines slowly decrease, especially as guys go over and get in trouble, have health issues, etc. Maybe as a place to visit one day for a cheap vacation, but I've pretty much lost any desire to go. Finding a younger lady is appealing, but there are many other choices for that.

I love Thai food, but more expensive when it comes to maintaining a Thai GF (they are more professional and Thai economy is double than here), So I sacrifice my favorite food for an arm candy here. I open a local BPI and BDO bank account and deposits my excess Pesos in to savings so I can have easier access to cash when I need it. These are typical differences you experience in any country - the culture will be different. It's best to respect local people and observe the experience. Many people not used to foreign cultures, will be complaining, BUT this is a life experience - blend in and respect the culture. These local people are searching for a path, but there isn't a path without skills, but they have not had an environment that encourages and rewards them - it's not their fault if the apron has stains on it - learn to blend in!!

Most retirees in the Philippines eventually find out that the Philippines way of life will never conform to what they want it to be. If you can not adapt to, or accept their culture, prepare for unending frustration and misery. My wife and I help our (notice I said "our" ) family there monthly but we are smart about how we do it. The large house we built in Cebu is the "family" house and also serves as a shelter when disasters strike the area. This is the real culture of the Philippines. If you respect and approve of that, and wisely live within your means, you can retire there and live happily.

Yup to everything you said. I really resonated with a couple of them. 1. e.g., every time I went to the Phils, I got food poisoning. Once I even got pulled off a plane in Hong Kong it was so bad, but I wasn't going to miss a flight. A friend of mine said a good prophylactic for food poisoning is Jack Daniels. However, don't forget the ice is nasty too. 2. We had a Filipino birthday party at our house last May. There was Karaoke. Of course there was Karaoke. 6:30 in the evening a neighbor asked us to turn it down. We were in the house with the doors and windows closed and the house is not all that old. No, I did not employ the neighbor. 3. Locals have a story about a Filipina that was suspected of having a dead body in her house. The cops showed up and thought so too. It was dried fish. The police turned the complaint over to the air quality management district.

trees around your house make it cooler but can be a danger in typhoons and hazard snakes vines often hang from trees and drag across your roof in wind at night scaring you to thinking some lion is running on your roof. digging foundations amount trees is hard and roots may regrow and damage. mountain breeze is cooler.

The whole Philippines for the Filipino. If they want that. They should not let us in or take our money. Alternatively this mentality holds the Filipinos back

If you move here give yourself at least 12 months to get use to the different culture and the way they do things.

Good info Scott much needed for the newbies, when I’m in the Ph I pretty much live in the Beach towns. To me there is a better quality of everything.

The only thing that really bothers me is #12. I have this extreme fear of being thrown in prison in a third world country. It would be a fate worse than death. Everything else I'm pretty chill about. Traffic or noise or power blackouts don't really bother me.

This was hilarious! I laughed the whole way through. I lived in Thailand for many years and some of this is familiar. ;)

Good day to you! Great video thank you. I’m watching you from England. I’ve been back-and-forth to the Philippines since 2001, before the Internet explosion where people had to go to an Internet café and use yahoo to send emails. 23 years on things are thankfully much easier. The number one reason most men go to the Philippines is because they have a dream of meeting a beautiful woman. Everything else is what comes with that decision and most guys can deal with that because they are retired and have mellowed with age. The stress and pressures of modern day living in the west are much less in the Philippines. Living without debt is a Reality for most expats and can change your life once you are debt free. Cash society Equals simplicity, have a great day 😊thanks Alan

Most things are just testing our patience but it happens in the west too maybe in lesser degrees. I have experienced most of the things mentioned here. Traffic is very congested. Food quality varies, Karaoke is loud and often loud music plays in or near stores and malls. I also send money to myself rather than use BDO or PNB banks. Brownouts are often in Mindanao but improving a bit. Isolation is possible but I have a good family that speaks english. Staring is common and its very hot so you need air con for sleeping. Scenery is nice, people are mostly nice, poverty is hard to see as well as neglected dogs on the streets. We have rats so a good cat is useful. All in all i have still developed affection for the people and the country. They are hardy and some work hard, they care for their families. Very industrious and capable people overall. And lastly many beautiful girls with strong but caring temperment. The country is still developing but people are people everywhere and problems exist even in modern western cities. Be kind and flexible if you go to the Philippines. Patience is required and you will have a whole new experience of living.

Mano or no-Mano. I'm not towering tall, but just 6 foot, and my Filipina wife is 4'10", and my father-in-law is maybe 4'8". My wife and I are close in age so her father is a bit older than both of my parents. Anyway... and even though my father-in-law is old enough to be my father, but I a tower over him by some 15 inches. A simple smile and handshake brings a smile to his face. Thirty something years later, and a few less teeth on his part, and I still get the same smile and grateful handshake.

Interesting video. Regarding the men staring at you and your girlfriend, I could easily imagine that the idea of “wealthy” expats taking (or soiling) their women must be a hard rub. They cannot compete there at all, and it’s amazing that they are as friendly as they are.

We had power outages fairly regularly in Canada in rural areas, so that's not new to me. Here in a rural area in Siquijor it's much the same, no real big change. I lived and grew up in Zambia so life in the Philippines is actually more advanced but (no surprise) slower than in Canada or UK. I would definitely reiterate the importance of learning and trying to understand the cultural differences, because it's reflected in the laws and legal system as well as how well you're received and virtually all your interactions with Filipinos. So find yourself a good tour guide and/or cultural attaché. It will make your life easier and in some cases it could save your life.

Now that the cost of living is going up here, compared to other SEA countries, the real reason men come is for the women, reputed to be easier to get with. Otherwise, there are much better, less expensive, countries, no offense meant to anyone.
