Great tips. Ribbon sound plus hypercardioid makes a really unique tool in the mic locker

Agreed. I love my M160. My fav so far is to mic a cab playing my. Vintage Rhodes through it. I have a nice little mic locker but this lil baby consistently delivers over the others in this application

I find that in A/B comparisons with condensers, on a variety of instruments , Beyer M160's tend to sound 'smaller' and further away - but if you persevere and use them, when you come to doing a mix, they usually just fit perfectly and blend really well with everything else. It's a matter of getting to know their strengths and how to EQ them (they take EQ extremely well).
@chinmeysway
@chinmeysway 3 жыл бұрын
Still confused what it means when a mic takes eq well vs not very well. Just thought to ask someone. Does it essentially mean the frequency response is super flat if a mic takes eq “well?”
@alanhaynes418
@alanhaynes418 3 жыл бұрын
@@chinmeysway It's more to do with the fact that some dull mics get harsh and shrill if you boost the highs, or thin if you cut the lows to compensate for proximity effect. The M160 is a smooth mic which never sounds less than great no matter how much (within reason) eq that you use.

condensors are like that a lot. they solo nicely on a/b but sometimes in a mix (esp when its all multitracked on condensors) can feel really superficial. i dont like eq'ing condensors either

This makes me want one even more!!.........it's the perfect solution to problems a lot of people have when recording drums. A single side address ribbon is one of the greatest ideas since melting cheese on round baked dough! :-) For a small space your room sounds bigger than it looks. It's definitely got some snap to it, so a ribbon is perfect.

I still get confused with the red dots on these. Like if I use m160s as a space pair for OHs on the kit which direction do the red dots need to face? From drummers perspective as I look up they are set left to right across the drums as opposed to the red dots pointing to the front and back of the kit. Hope my question makes sense. Thx!

constantly considering selling one of my coles pair to get a pair of these. then id have a mono coles still and a pair of 160s. id benefit from the cardi pattern i think and also id never dream of putting a coles that close to a kick port or guitar amp etc

if you put your ribbons somewhat off-axis and out of the way of the air blast from the kick drum you can get some amazing sounds don't go too close though...

Great video!!!! I love my m160s. Audio is a bit heavy on the high K freqs for this mix. I’d back off or attenuate a bit of 8khz on a Pultec style eq to get a more natural sound. The m160 isn’t actually dark imo. Just less bright than condenser mics. More like my ears naturally hear things.

Well done Blair! Curious what pre's you prefer for the m160 ribbons?
@BlairSinta

I don't really have a preference acutally. I use them a lot through APIs or Chandelor TG2s.

The API's might give them a little more in your face then some might want from short ribbons like these which tend to already be kind of bright. 'Course depends on what you're going for

thanks, but good god those crashes are at least 5 dB over any sensible limit...are you sure you don't have some hearing loss in the 6-8 kHz range? it's BLARING there, mate! It sounds like the snare is boosted around that region, too, which is what made me ask. but thanks again it sounds beautiful otherwise.
