Fantastic review. Great job really laying out the pad wear and how it effects sound and touching on the build quality. I adore my dt770 pro 80 ohm. There just something familiar about grabbing them for day to day stuff even though I own more technical headphones.

Exactly this. Every time I've been using another headphone, even ones far superior I put on my 770's and I feel like I've come home. I often forget I'm wearing them, I might have finished playing a game, watching a video or whatever hours ago but I never took them off and they never get uncomfortable so often I just leave them on all day.

I LOVE the DT770 Pro 80 Ohm without any EQ on it for listening to music. Especially Metal, even more so Gothic Metal, sounds sooo wonderful with these. The treble really shines on the female voices and the bass impact is just as well awesome. I love it. Somehow Beyerdynamic did hit my taste to 100% how I like it so that I dont need an EQ for them at all.

Idk why these have such a reputation for being so v-shaped. I have these (80 ohm) and they’re way less v-shaped than other headphones I own which no one really says are v-shaped. The highs never bother me like a lot of headphones do. That can be a big problem for me because I listen to a lot of metal, so obviously I like to crank the volume, but on a lot of headphones I can’t get it loud enough because the highs start to hurt my ears. That never happens with these, and there’s never any sibilance, but the highs are definitely still there. They sound great for string instruments too. The bass also isn’t insane like some people would have you believe. They have excellent, tight bass that can be really punchy and aggressive when needed, but when it isn’t they sit back in the mix and never overpower anything like many bass heavy cans do. That’s also a big problem for me because I find a bit of extra bass makes heavily distorted guitars sound boomy and shitty, but it’s perfect on these. These are without a doubt my favourite headphones for metal. My only complaints are the lack of sound stage (but they’re closed monitoring cans, so you can’t really fault them for that) and the attached wire. One thing I don’t hear people talking about though is that these need a bit of a break in period before they’re really comfortable (at least mine did). Some of the pivot points needed to loosen up a bit and maybe the pads needed to squish down or something, but they got much more comfortable as I wore them. Edit: Mine are about 2 years old now and the pads are noticeably more squished down than brand new ones are, so keep that in mind. I also wanted to say that after watching the rest of the video, I’m glad I got the 80 ohm version. I was kicking myself for not getting the 250 ohm version because I thought they’d sound a bit better and I’d vastly prefer a coiled wire, but after hearing your comparisons and seeing the graphs I’m really happy I have the 80 ohm ones because they sound like they’re much more of what I want out of a headphone.

I just got the 80 ohm version yesterday, and can say with certainty that you definitely want an amp with the 80 ohm cans. You'll have to crank up your phone/ipad volume to full max to get just a medium level of volume. It's fine, but it's not enough to please most people. They work great with my motu m4 audio interface though, so I'm definitely keeping them. Just figured I'd mention in case your on the fence about which ohm version to get. If you plan on using your phone mostly, definitely get the 32ohm version.

I got the 80 ohm a few years ago based on a review I saw. The bass was fantastic and quick as you describe. Not a lot of mid-bass which is great (I find stuff like the hd650 and koss porta pro to have an ear-clogged underwater sound because of too much mid bass for my ears). The soundstage, imaging, and build quality are awesome. The only issue was the "mount beyer" treble peak. I would listen to guitar solos and they would sound great until hitting that certain note. Way too loud in comparison to the rest. Either way, these are my favorite headphones.

For people like me with not so good and trained ears, I consider a headphone with big bass (but CLEAR and FAST) and high peak around 8-10k, to detect the sibilance much more easier when I mix, a blessing. Ordered this today - eager to “see” how it sounds!
@EliteRock

The issue with pad degradation is intractable really. I've been using Senn HD580s (with HD600 grilles) for almost 20 years which have similar pads to the DT 770, and it's always a (welcome) surprise how much the bass improves in quantity and extension when I replace them (on the fourth set so far). I've just ordered DT 770 Pro 250's because (after all these years) I fancy a bit more bass extension occasionally (I've started to really appreciate the double-kick work that many contemporary hard rock drummers use - love the "serene swan" effect when they seem to leisurely keep time on the kit while machine-gunning intricate 1/16th-note fills/patterns with the kick). ETA >> if you read this, have you considered how the two different versions are interacting with the amp used? Have you tried multiple amps? I'm using a fairly refined Cmoy (opamp) design with a 24v (Li-ion battery) supply and split rail (IOW +12/-12V), and although it should theoretically be fine with 80 ohms I know that ultimately it has limitations in it's current headroom (because of the rail splitter chip) and should be better with the 250 ohm load which I why I went with them (but probably going to swap the cable for a straight one).
@metal571
@metal571 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah regardless of how much bass each unit has anymore for the 80 ohm, the big difference is definitely that the 250 ohm not only has more treble but the air elevates in addition to the treble spike. Regardless of variation, this characteristic above 10k has been pretty consistent with 250 vs 80 in my experience. I keep around a decade old or so DT770 80 ohm because the soundstage is immense and the bass is so much fun. K371 is a much better headphone for hearing what was actually recorded

I've wanted to try the Custom Studio for a while because of the removable cable mostly. But the price has generally put me off, I mean if its basically a 770, I'm not sure a removable cable and bass ports are worth 50% more cash. Interesting. What amp were you using for the testing of the 250Ohm? Considering they are tough to drive, maybe that had an impact? I've had a different experience than you. I bought my first 80Ohm set of DT770 Pro's in early 2009. It was my first good set of headphones, replacing my old cheap and beaten up 1990's vintage Sony MDR CD250's I inherited from my dad. When I first got my 80ohm set in 2009, I struggled with them. I thought the highs were harsh and sibilant enough to make me cringe at times. The Head-Fi forums peeps suggested I "break them in" with pink noise. I didn't actually believe this would do anything but I gave it a try, running them for a week straight with pink noise on a loop. I'm not convinced that did anything, but over time I got used to them. It was probably a case of breaking in my ears more than it was breaking in the headphones. That said, I bought the 80hom version specifically because I wanted to run them straight out of the 3.5mm line out on my laptop and iPod. Back then dedicated DAC's and headphone amps were - shall we say - less prevalent than they are today. Like you, I prefer open backed headphones for music listening, (this is what I use my Sennheiser HD650's, or rather, the Massdrop HD6xx version for) but I like to keep a closed set around for when things are noisy. These days, I have a decent DAC (Second gen multibit Schiit Bifrost 2) hooked up with balanced cables (to avoid noise) to a first gen Schiit Jotunheim. The Jotunheim has ample power, so a couple of years ago, I decided to pick up a set of 250ohm set to see how they differed. Side by side, I find them pretty similar. The 250Ohm set is maybe a little bit more civilized, and I think I like them better, but it is really very close. (Yes, I used new pads for the comparison) To your point, this may be up to unit variance. Who knows.

I suspect a lot of this comes down to individual variances during manufacturing and not the impedance of each model. I just replaced an 80 ohm set with tame highs that were perfect for all-day music listening (and that I should have never sold in the first place) with another 80 ohm, and these new ones are painfully bright. I've personally found the change in sound signature when replacing the pads to be extremely minor, though this could be because the adhesive failed long before the foam collapsed both times I needed to replace them.

I am looking for a smaller, cheaper but good amplifier/dac for the Beyerdynamics DT 770 pro 80 ohm. I have very little knowledge about this and can use all the help choosing the right product. I want to use this with an LG CX television. Is it possible to connect an amplifier to this television via optical, USB or 3.5 mm cable? And would this just work well with these headphones? If so, do you have any recommendations or can you recommend some products? Thanks in advance

Thank you for your video, but I have a question. How did you carry out the frequency response test?, all I can gather is that the two responses are relative, but not knowing what the response of the microphone that sampled the curve was, it is impossible to ascertain the correct curve. As an old fart from a professional recording background, I thought I should point this out. From my research, I found out that the 80 Ohm version has a longer voice coil former so that the 80 Ohm version can have longer excursions (ie be louder) and still be within the magnetic flux. Difficult to explain verbally, much like trying to explain architecture by smell. Industry standard frequency response microphones are made by B&K and cost a fortune, they are used to accurately measure frequency response. Sorry I'm waffling. I love the 770 Pros 80 ohm. Before I always used the Sennheiser Professional HD 25, but have found their construction leads to problems. The plugs into their drivers fail which leads to them being terrible to use. I changed over to the Beyerdynamics and have not had any problems since. I listen at high volume and the comfort of the 770's is perfect for long and detailed listening. I would recommend the 770 Pro 80 ohm. Waffle over, and out. :-))

If you want an AKG i heard that the K612 Pro is better sounding than the 700 series. I would personally not use a v-shaped headphone for mixing because it is not neutral and so you will compensate for the v-shaped sound, not saying that the DT770 Pro is bad just not neutral

@WheezyTech

You mean that some people might attribute pad wear as 'burn in' when its actually the pads changing thickness with age and affecting sound? That's a good point, I think most headphones are affected by this to some degree, but the 770's are one of those where its really quite a stark change as they wear.

@@RichardoIpicyt Not sure I would recommend the M50x, as much as I have a soft spot for them. Unless you want a really portable and aggressive sounding headphone which is what they are good at. I find them too fatiguing and uncomfortable past 20 minutes. I get that some people still like them, and thats all good. They filled that portable headphone niche for a while but they've been pushed out by the rise of bluetooth headphones. They do make a good monitoring headphone, but surpassed by the K371. Its hard to recommend the M50x in 2020.
@albertovicinanza
@albertovicinanza 4 жыл бұрын
@@metal571 Yeah, I will most likely buy the Port Pro, I need a headphone for when I walk my dog/am around but need to stay aware of my surroundings, I have the KSC75 on the partsexpress headband but when there's noise outside the bass is not enough. I was thinking about the K361 because I was really interested in how they sound, I like lean and bright headphones but I also like bass and their frequency response seems interesting and fit to my taste. The K371 are a tad shouty to my ears but despite being fairly good at identifying frequencies I haven't found which parts are the culprit yet, I don't find the 650 shouty for example and I usually like upper mid forwardness. One day I'll buy the K712 too. I remember when I said my 650 were my endgame, how naive of me lol DT770 appeal me but tbh they're not portable enough for when I'm outside and when I'm home I'm more likely to use open backs. Might still get one one day.

My experience with a ~7yr old pair of 250ohms vs a newer pair of limited edition 80ohms was that the bass was definitely slightly boosted on the 80ohms over the older 250ohms. Your investigation into pad wear seems to show that it may have had a lot to do with what I thought I was hearing and was not something I considered at the time. I would highly recommend trying the MMX300s, I originally planned to upgrade my DT770 80ohms to the DT1770s but after comparing both to the MMX300 I ended up choosing them and still use them every day. Very similar sounding to the DT770 80ohm bass but the mid and treble response is more in line with the DT880 250ohm. Upper mid and high frequencies sound more revealing/detailed to me than any other Beyer I've heard. I have owned DT 770 80/250ohms, MMX300 32ohms, auditioned DT880 250ohms (too flat for me), DT990 250ohms (ouch), DT1770s (meh), yet to audition DT1990s.
@WheezyTech
@WheezyTech 4 жыл бұрын
Considering how I use my 770s as a general purpose and gaming headphone, I think I'd be all over the MMX300 if it wasn't 2-2.5x the price of the 770. Although I suppose you're getting a removable cable, build similar to a closed back 880 and a mic attached so yeah it's probably worth the extra. Definitely one I want to check out though for sure.
@physkx
@physkx 4 жыл бұрын
@@WheezyTech I would agree that the removeable cable and mic would not be worth the extra price over the DT 770 IF they sounded the same.. but the MMX300 is clearly superior to my ears. It does not sacrifice the things I liked in the DT 770 80ohm such as the bass and soundstage, whilst improving on the upper mid and high frequencies clarity.

Ik this is a late response so idk how useful this’ll be, but they’re great for that. I bought mine for monitoring my guitar and they’re awesome. That’s pretty much what they’re made for actually. They’re very comfortable so you can wear them as long as you want, and they have a nice tight clamp so you can move around in them without worrying about them falling off. The 80 ohm version is actually pretty easy to drive so you don’t need to worry about having enough power for them. I’d want something more neutral for mixing, but just for practicing and tracking they’re prefect.

The 80 ohm ones are fine off of a pc, but you should probably get an amp because pretty much everything will sound better with one and you might need it for quieter music. Btw, audio interfaces are for using microphones and things like that, I’m pretty sure you’re just talking about an amp. A decent usb powered dac/amp is all you need for something like this. I don’t have any recommendations because I haven’t bought an amp in years so idk what’s good rn, but I hope I at least gave you a decent starting point to do some research

rickert ik, I have an interface that I use for connecting my guitars to my computer and it has a headphone amp. But most people don’t need one because they just use usb or 3.5mm microphones running straight into their computer for voice chat and that’s about it. It makes more sense in that case to just get a dedicated headphone amp because it’ll usually be cheaper, and a lot of the time interface amps are pretty weak so you’d get a better amp for less money. The amp in my interface is about half as powerful as a usb powered dac/amp I have that was a little over half the price
