Just got the 80ohm version. I used a sennheiser hd25 before which was 70ohm and quite loud on my maudio mixtrack hub. I wasnt sure about the 250ohm version because i didnt knew if the soundcard will power it properly and i didn’t wanted to upgrade that also. The 80ohm version is achieving the sweet spot of loudness for me without fatigueing my ears and having a clean and enjoyable sound while producing and mixing. Hope this helps anyone.

Plugging these into my Pioneer DDJ, would you recommend 80 for loud base while mixing / djing ? Or 32 for a wider ranger of use

Maximum power transfer: A term I've had to know about WRT car batteries and starters. The same idea applies to this very good video presentation. For the car starter: the internal resistance of the battery equals the load (resistance) - the starter. Impedance is dynamic (moving coil idea) Impedance matching equates to maximum power transfer - output 250 Ohms and headphones 250 Ohms. IMHO not to throw techno jargon around just adding some food for thought. Once again I greatly appreciate quality sound and a very well done video, like this one.
@OurgasmComrade
@OurgasmComrade 3 ай бұрын
Headphones don't follow the "maximum power transfer" theorem to operate optimally. They use a hybrid of current source capability, and impedance "bridging" which aims to have the lowest output impedance of the audio device as possible, compared to a higher impedance of the headphones. At least by a factor of 5 to 8, because if not then there will be signal loss (in voltage, NOT watts) and skewing of the low frequency response (for the worse, resulting in bloated and in-accurate bass response because headphones are modelled as a complex RLC circuit, the ratio of resistance compared to inductance and capacitance directly affects transient and frequency response). The max power transfer theorem ONLY applies to radio and very high frequency systems.

*This is my opinion* 1-The 32 ohm has a V-shaped frequency response compared to the other two, so more treble and bass. However I know the least about the 32 version so I will not discuss it here. 2- the 80 and 250 differ manly in treble region, and arguably 250 is more detailed due to its higher impedance. 3-The 250 has an elevated treble and some people perceive it as "too bright" for normal use. The elevated treble could be revelling which is useful for professional use. 4- 80 doesn't have that elevation in treble making it flatter and easier to listen in higher volumes. 5- People who love bass like me should consider getting the 80 as you can rise the volume without getting uncomfortable or fatigued due to the highs/treble. But if you have a powerful amp and love to EQ, you can get the 250 and adjust it to your preference. 6- The 250 and 80 both can be EQed to sound similar to each other. I would say the 80 is more for home use and casual listing. While 250 is more oriented for professional work and critical listing. I got the 80 ohms and have a low shelf filter in the bass region because I enjoy a bit more bass. The meds and highs/treble sounds good to me, so I didn't adjust them. And I find myself using it more than my other headphones. Things to note: 1- the 80 sounded a bit quite to me without amplification. And if pushed on phone to the max the sound is loud but it distorted which is not ideal. I personally use them with ifi Zen Dac powered by usb only, and thats enough to make them sound loud without distorting. 2-At first the 80s sounded very bright and I had to EQ the treble down, but I think as the pads worn-out (or maybe I grew familiar to the sound) the harshness disappeared and now I only have a bass low shelf filter.

You sound very informative. Is there any reason to use an open backed headphone instead of these closed backed ones as a listener? I'm trying to figure that out before spending hundreds of dollars on a pair of headphones to upgrade from my Bose Bluetooth ones.
@xivix6710
@xivix6710 Жыл бұрын
@@MediaBrad Oh didn't notice your comment earlier. Normally open backs sound more spacious with a bigger soundstage and they sound more natural/life-like. Which makes them more immersive. Yet they require a quiet environment as every sound could be heard say things like AC, the road or an airplane passing by. But keep in mind that some headphone break the rule where open backs sound very narrow and close backs sound spacious. To me, I rarely use my open backs because I live in a noisy area. And for the dt770 80 ohms it is spacious and detailed enough for my use case.

Nice work. Couple of comments: 1) You didn't mention that some versions are available with either gray or black velour. I know that applies to the DT770, because I just bought the black set. I suspect it also applies to the DT990 (mine are gray). 2) When I was making my buying decision between 80 and 250 ohm, I was concerned my iPhone and iPad wouldn't drive the 250 ohm version very much at all. So I plugged my DT990 into the phone and pad, and I could hear quite well in a quiet room, which is all I ever listen in. Yes, I needed to go one tap below full volume, but that was OK for casual listening. So I wouldn't say it's true that the phone cannot drive the 250 ohm. Moreover, I think you said a phone won't drive the 80 ohm. Maybe that was true with earlier phone models or something. I have the iPhone 14 and the iPad 9th generation. No noticeable problem. So I went with the 250 ohm. My primary use will be for tracking using a Motu M6, which has plenty of power for 250 ohm headphones.

Any feedback using the 250 ohm with the Motu M6? I would really appreciate it since I have a focusrite 2i2 4th gen (just arrived) and bought a set of 250 ohm (before seeing this video) and now I have doubts... I will receive them today 2/7/2024 so I'm not sure if I should open and try them or just return them and order the 80 ohm. My primary activity will be to play my electric bass connected to the focusrite while listening to both my bass and songs for practice. I do have a license to the FL Studio software so I'll potentially do some recording but nothing professional. Any comments please let me know. Thank you!

it's amazes me how well put together video couldn't get basic physics right. For impedance twice as large you need twice the Voltage to match same wattage(and same volume output if sensitivity is the same). Most of the headphone amps are voltage sources. They can have negative current feedback or total current limit, but they mostly improve maximum current capacity and multiply output voltage up to the limits of the power supply. And this is how ac powered amp differs from most of portable ones, it can achieve higher output voltage and as result get more out of high impedance cans.

Impedance is NOT current. It's resistance, but since we are working with AC (audio) the resistance changes with frequency. Impedance is resistance with respect to frequency. This impedance characteristic changes with freq. You can see this clearly in an impedance plot for the driver. The higher impedance drivers will need more voltage to drive.

@@ioguapin hi! Actually, I did go for 32 ohm 😁 and Audio Technica 40x for comparison but don't think I'll be keeping either pair. Will think about that. BD are too bassy for me and the vocal spreads quite a bit. I prefer if it stays close so I can hear it properly. And AT's sound is quite similar to my old headphones which broke, but AT are very uncomfortable - very tight on my jaw so working in them for long would be quite impossible. Also, the breaths on AT were much more audible and deeper when listening to a separate vocal stem in Logic. I think I'll be going back to my old headphones - they're not perfect but I feel they suit my needs better (editing vocals, listening to mixes, recording). The only shame is that they will probably break again in a couple of years because of the design. But I'm a bit disappointed with BD 32. I really wanted to like them but the bass is too much, couldn't focus on anything else. Also the high vocal sounds a bit tiny.

I went through 4 different headsets (incl BD 770 250s) before getting BD 770 80ohm; i'm using motu ultralite interface which has a decent output but wasn't enough to drive 250ohm bass-levels well at comfortable level. I found the 250s never had enough low end oomph until they were cranked, and the sensitivity on high end was fatiguing at that point. I think the responsiveness of 250s really depends on your source and varies between things like 'movies' and 'music' and different pieces of equipment. They're great if you're going to use one high-end amp and that's it. If you're wearing them all day and switching between 'critical listening' (mixing, recording) and general use, 80's had the most consistent performance for me. The comfort and fit of the BD's is also excellent to wear all day. I found on-ear headphones (like AT M50x) got uncomfortable after extended wear. Depends on your head size, ymmv

The ultalite couldn't drive the 250's? I don't remember having issues with the m4, different interface, but that surprises me. I've got a UCX 2 fireface now and have had zero issues driving the 250's - which are my favorite set of cans in my setup for mixing and performance, but they are pretty much useless outside of the studio.

Honestly, there is so much unit variance with this headphone model and variables between amps, dacs, burn-in time, and pads, that the difference between a flatter response with 80 Ohm vs more V shaped with 32/250 Ohm is negligible. They are all good at this price range and according to users who have compared them, have very close shaped responses in that characteristic Beyer tuning. I honestly, chose the 80 just to be able to use either amped or un-amped. With the other two impedances, you don’t have a choice either way, it’s one of the other. In fact, some users, like Wheezy Tech have measured the response between the 80 v. 250 and found the 80 to actually be more quote “articulate” and “more dynamic” than the 250, which contradictory to Beyerdynamic’s descriptions, imply that the 250’s may actually present with less clarity, detail, although the 250 and 32 Ohm vers. use that underhanging coil design and less overall coil surface area, supposedly for better mobility and punch. Also, he found pad wear to be a major factor (up to 6db of diff in the treble or bass) in the frequency response of the headphones. Meaning, essentially you can find at what point of your pads life gives you the sound signature you like, and that will tell you when to replace your pads. With factors like these, plus varying subjective reviews, it really negates the issue of impedance differences. So, I literally decided on the 80’s for the greatest compatibility with my gear. I can run amped or un-amped, and if it gives a flatter response, that’s a plus for me. I’m actually looking for a flatter, more accurate response, particularly for my use in listening to my digital piano during practice and recording. However, most of what I have heard from other users is that it is actually more shaped or colored than the graphs shown here by Beyerdynamics, and very close to the other 2 variants if not with more attack in the bass, with less highs. If this is the case, it will still pair well with my iPad + dac amp for listening to movies, flac files, and my hi-if concert recordings when really need to use a closed back for airplane or travel. Thanks for the input, I did enjoy your video and info you shared. Will be interesting to see how these do for my needs, however, I don’t personally have the other variants to compare..

I use the 80ohm version now after owning the 250ohm version...the 250ohm's need a really good interface/amp etc...ok if you have a PreSonus 1018c like myself but i still prefer the sound of the 80ohm version & after burning in with a burn in CD, & plenty of Rap for a week 24hrs on repeat, now they sound superior imo, all our ears are different...they do go more than loud enough so if anyone who has them then mind your hearing... lol...good technical explanation...after 40+ yrs playing music & mixing mates bands i'm more than happy with the 80ohm version...i use Sennheiser HD660s's for serious music listening (150ohm), if your using an interface i would test 250ohm headphones before buying as cheaper interfaces, under £300, might not give enough clean volume as 250ohm is harder to drive & cloudlifter's cost £150 for a single input one...more than the headphones cost brand new....only use 250ohm if you have a decent interface with plenty input gain or a decent headphone dac/amp...not cheap...the only bargain i have heard is the Zen Dac ll (£200-£250 with power supply) which has enough juice to drive 250ohm headphones easily but it's lack of inputs hinders connectivity....i would suggest trying with the equipment you intend to use with various impedence headphones before buying..the 32ohm can be driven by your phone no problem, though they use more battery power than iem's.....that long cable i think comes in handy as i use a rolling/sliding seat to move from side to side, depends on your set-up & what your using them for i guess...good vid bud...👍

From what other reviews (channels) suggest, I always thought the most neutral or flat sound would be best, not overdoing it in any one area. Does the 80 give less distortion at high volume than the other two, or is there no difference, and have you ever had to use 32 ohm in a studio environment

Higher ohms require more voltage and less current I believe. Not more current. Not sure though.

You are confusing current with voltage. The higher the impedance, the more voltage you would need to attain the desired current and volume levels.

The main difference between the three models is the required power it takes to drive the coils to produce the same volume. This has to do with the amount of power delivered to the coils, not the current. Power is not the same thing as current. For example, the higher impedance of 250 ohms means it requires more power to drive the same amount of current through the coils, which may help to produce a more accurate sound. Remember the equation, I = P / Z (current = power in watts divided by the impedence in ohms of the coil or circuit)? So your statement about the current was perhaps unintentionally a little misleading, but I get your point: requiring more power to drive the coil may help to achive a more accurate reproduction of the sound, but a lesser coil impedence such as 32 or 80 may be used to provide the same volume with less power by allowing the coil to conduct the same amount of current due to the lower opposition to current (impedence).

Very detailed and interesting review. I own the DT 770 PRO 80 ohms and use it with a Presonus Studio 24C audio interface which sounds great. The loudest i can get at the maximum level is quite enough, but not overwelming. That's the reason why i think that the 250 Ohms would not be correctly driven with this audio interface to get enough level.

This comment helped me. I am trying do deside on my first home studio gear and have desided on the presonus 24c interface and was wondering about headphones. I will start with only one set of headphones and no monitors. My impression is that I could get a more differentiated sound, wich could be better for mixing and making the music sound great, with the 250 ohm, but I understand from your comment that the interface would not be able to drive the headphones and get enough sound. But if I also buy an headphone amp, like the presonus HP4(or HP2?), I can connect it to the 24c and get great volum on the 250 ohm's right?

Thanks AI One, I have the same audio interface and wasn't sure if the 250 ohm units would work. I have watched a half-dozen of these impedance vids by the "experts" and they have never verbally addressed the whole genre of audio interfaces specifically. The devices that most of us will plug into. At least Beyerdynamic did in writing.

Hi everyone I’m a professional musician, keyboard player and vocalist in various bands in the UK I’m after a new pair of headphones, currently have the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 ohms model, I’ve always been underwhelmed by their sound (dunno why) a bit of distortion sometimes, but extremely comfortable to wear and well built… have I actually bought the wrong ohms model? 😳 maybe the 32 ohms would fix the distortion issue? I do not do any recording or mixing and currently have my DT770’s plugged straight into my Soundcraft EFX12 Mixing Desk (non powered desk) my keyboards and vocal mics are then plugged into the desk, I just practise songs along to original tracks I’m learning for my gigs… the tracks are playing from my High Spec Windows PC, straight into my Solid State Logic SSL 2+ Audio Interface, which also goes into my Mixer.. are there a set of headphones you’d recommend that will sound awesome for what I use them for? I have just tried a pair of Sony MDR-7506 and these do not distort… Very odd I had to turn the headphone volume dial down when using the Sonys, then back up when using the DT770’s to match the volume of the Sonys May try the Audio Technica ATH-M50X and Sennheiser HD599

there's something I didn't get, these headphones are meant to be used as studio monitors so a detailed but flatter response is preferable. saying the 32 and 250 ohm models have a V shaped response would actually be the opposite of that, right?

I did notice the 7506 were slightly different in sound than the MDR-V6. I bought a pair of V6s when I was in the Army back in 1988 or so in Germany at the PX. I LOVED those things. I never had a pair of headphones before or after those that have that sound. Life beat them up though. My dog ate the thin fabric covering the drivers (I know how this sounds but it’s true😂) and then my V6s went down hill from there. Broken this, cracked that and they where just holding on by a thread at that point. I dumped them but to this day I wish I hadn’t. Man I miss that MDR-V6. You’re a lucky guy with all those headphones
