After watching your review a few weeks ago, I got the T1's and T5's on Amazon to compare and leave one of them for myself (I also go the balanced APOS cable you recommended). First of all, let me say that until this point my references were Sennheiser HD600's. This sadly quickly changed. Let me say that I think you accurately described the difference between these two headphones. I would even add that the T1's, to me, sound more closed in, with a more compressed soundstage and less air than T5's (which shouldn't happen). They have a darker sound (classic Beyer), less resolution, flatter (more one dimensional) bass, and a cheap sounding peak in the treble that colors the highs and compresses them into a narrow frequency band. If anyone listens to these two headphones back to back (which I can do since my amp has balanced and single ended outputs live at the same time) and does A/B on the spot, there is no way the T1's would be picked over T5's. The limitations of the T1's are crystal clear here. Having said that, they are still better than the Senn 600's which I dearly loved for years. The T5's are (as you said) special headphones. I believe that their driver speed is the main reason that leads to their resolution, the ease with which they let go of sounds and their sheer slam. Overall, tonally to me they are as close to neutral from the lower mid's to highs. They are a bit too bass heavy for my taste and I decided to reduce the lowest octave by a few DB. But other than that, these headphones are truly special. I am listening to songs I know as well as anything and am hearing new details, not just in the highs (which is typical with new hyper resolution HiFi) but the details are creeping in in the mid's!, lower mid's! and bass!). The T5's at 850 on Amazon IMO are an absolute steal. Once you hear them, everything else will sound as if someone put cotton balls in your ears. Thank you for your review, and I hope my comments help someone out there in their choice of new reference headphones. (update - after putting a few hundred hours on them I have decided to take away EQ in the bass. Running them straight now and think they are basically on point across the full frequency range)

HI, I just bought these headphones and I find them so far fantastic quality. I dont really understand your comments about the cables rubbing on clothing and to buy new balanced apos cables. Im new to audio so wondered if you could recommend which cables to replace them with that doesnt involve having to change the plugs. I run from a Topping MX5. Which cable should i replace them with so I can just plug the new ones straight in as per the included cable? Thanks

If you're not having any issues with the cables, there's no need to swap them, but if you do need to for the sake of a balanced connection type then there are lots of brands around that can probably help. Unfortunately, it's hard to recommend cable makers because there are so many out there and it might depend a bit on where you are too.

Closed back Beyer with big soundstage ? That is a nice combination. That's why i'm still using DT 770. It's soundstage and imaging makes so much sense. People often confusing open sound with big soundstage that's not true. I've tried lots of open backs and they don't have impressive soundstage at all. They just sound open and more natural in the vocals. So i generally don't value the opinions of reviewers when it comes to soundstage but i think you nailed it with your reviews. Emu Teak review and comparison would be very nice. One of the rare respectable closed back out there.

@@PassionforSound Hi again, thanks a lot for your answer. Like I said before I’m looking for the Topping D90/A90 stack, it cost USD$1,399 and buy the Beyerdynamic XLR balanced cable for my T5s (USD$149) in order to use them on balanced mode. What do you think if I buy the RME ADI 2 DAC instead, it cost USD$1,149, and use it on singled ended? How do you compare this two DACs? It definitely better balanced output? I also watch your review of the RME and it’s a great product too. I really appreciate your opinion. Also know that the Topping can be more versatile because has separate components, and full of options, the RME can be more compact and German made. Thanks a lot again for all your content.

Hi Juan, I would choose the A90/D90 stack over the ADI-2. The A90 is significantly better (both balanced and SE) than the ADI-2 internal amp. The DACs are probably comparable for PCM/DSD, but the D90 does MQA and sounds great when fed MQA.

I own a pair and like them alot. That said I do not think the Beyerdynamic T5 G3 is worth 1000USD at all. They should retail for 600-700USD. They do not compete with the Focal Celestee, or the Aeon 2 Closed imo. Also the build quality and design does not scream 1000USD at all. The look less impressive then the DT1990 which is roughly half the price.
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard the Celestee and it's been ages since I tried the Aeon 2, but I think they're well priced. Not saying that I'm right and you're wrong as you're completely entitled to your opinion. The T5.3 has a sense of clarity and smoothness to the sound that's hard to find in my experience so it probably depends on what we all value most.

Always used dt770 pro & they’re bombproof. At 80ohms my portable audio player’s volume is maxed out. So a luxury upgrade at 32ohms would give me that extra volume if I really want to blast it! Definitely appealing 🤔

I'm curious if you've heard the beyerdynamic DT1770? It seems these T5 are warmer and less aggressive than the DT1770 but are they worth double the price? Which is darker, the T5 or NightOwl? Is the treble softer and more reserved than even the NightOwl? Also, how do the mids compare? More forward on the NightOwl? Thanks for the review.
@PassionforSound2 жыл бұрын
They're really different, but not necessarily darker/brighter. The NightOwl has the more forward or present mids because the T5 has a bigger bass bump and treble peak. The bass bump from the T5 probably makes it slightly more warm overall and therefore might be considered darker, but it's also got slightly peakier treble. That's where it gets hard to sum them up into just one or two terms

Would you say that the reduction in resistance to 32Ω has not degraded the sound fidelity in terms of dynamics? Also, how would you compare these to Sony Z1R headphones?
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
Hi WorldView, I haven't heard the Z1R to comment, sorry. As for impedance, I don't get all the people that complain about the reduction in impedance as if it inherently degrades the sound quality. Unless you specifically want to use OTL amps or have a device with overly high output impedance then this really isn't a concern. I found the T5s pretty close to perfect in all areas (assuming you like the warm signature) and am trying to find the funds to buy a pair for myself. There's nothing lost with the reduced impedance.
@WorldView223 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound Thanks for your prompt replies. I've read testimonies of audiophiles in the past having compared certain Beyerdynamic models (DT1770, DT1990 I think) in the various impedances that they're sold and found differences consistent with the claim that - all else equal - "higher impedance, better fidelity".
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
Ah, that's generally true for the Beyers with different impedance options. In this case, they've designed the T5 specifically for the single impedance so I don't know that the same theory applies. I.e. they haven't adapted the "pro" 600 ohm version down to an easy-to-drive version like they might have with other models
@WorldView223 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound That's a good point. Let's hope so. I own a pair of T1.2 and - at 600Ω - they're not as easy to drive as low impedance headphones, and your review made me think of the potential benefits in swapping them with a pair of T5.3. Having said that, I have to mention that I'm very happy with T1.2 except perhaps for some lack of speed in certain kinds of music and a hint of occasional piercing highs; also, a lower well-controlled bass sounds (pun intended) very tempting! Furthermore, I'm being sceptic about losing T1.2's great stage.
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
I think the T5.3 will have a slightly reduced soundstage, but that's all going from my memory of the T1.1. The T5.3 have an amazing soundstage and great bass. The treble is definitely tamed, but it's likely a LOT tamer than the T1.2

I think the issue is that basically all driver types are flawed in one way or other. Even high impedance drivers have issues with large impedance swings where there's driver resonance, etc.

Hello, how good do they isolate? I'm looking for an upgrade for my Oppo pm3 and msr7b, since I mostly listen outdoors and over ear, thanks
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
Hi abrahan, I didn't specifically test the isolation, but they did isolate quite well in general terms and the increased bass always helps because the background noise that gets past passive isolation is in the lower frequencies so they'll be a good option I think.
@abrahanneyra16573 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound I didn't know that fact about how bass helps pasive isolation, thankss , I sub
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
Hi abrahan, thanks for subbing. Just to make sure I've been clear, the bass doesn't increase isolation, but the ambient noise that makes it past passive isolation is in the form of lower frequency vibrations through the headphone and through your skull (bone conduction). The end result is that if the bass levels aren't high enough in the headphone, we'll feel the need to turn it up more to balance with the ambient noise and then we end up with too much treble and/or hearing loss

How are these headphones in bass response compare to the LSA HP2 Ultra

I haven't heard the HP2 Ultra to comment - sorry

After using these, are they any better than Nuraphones
@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jesse, they're so different. I love the Nuraphones and would choose them every time for portable use because they cancel noise and are wireless, but the T5s can produce significantly better sound quality from a decent portable device or desktop setup.
@Jesse_Alex4 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound Oh Hi there, okay so what matters to me the most is sound quality and if T5s can give that to me over Nuraphones, I'll grab those then.
@PassionforSound4 жыл бұрын
Yep, they're comfortably better IMO. Slightly different sound signature, but overall clarity of tone is outstanding

Are these still worth in 2024? In 800$? Better than denon d9200 in your opinion?

I would definitely choose them over the D9200.so I guess that's a yes 🙂

Hi, if you still reply, what dac would you recommend for this pair, would an audio interface be enough?
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
Hi FC, you'll get much better performance from a dedicated DAC/amp setup. The audio interfaces are generally not great for headphone listening (beyond basic monitoring/editing). As for what to recommend, it depends on your budget. How much are you looking to spend?
@falsecatalyst39363 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound well i got a lot to blow right now so $1000 is okay to me, I’m planning to upgrade from my mdr1am2, which has been brilliant and only took 16 ohms to drive, but with super high end headphones like the t5 I might as well go balls to the wall when it comes to the source too
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
For $1000 or so I'd probably go for the Schiit Modius or Bifrost 2 (budget dependent) and then either the Schiit Jotunheim 2 (if you can arrange a balanced termination for the headphones) or probably the Burson Funk that I'm yet to try myself, but would comfortably by blind. The Burson Conductor is also a great option for an all-in-one solution that will sound brilliant.

The T5.3 is a lovely, enjoyable headphone, but the Z1R is a tier above IMO. Z1Rs are the best closed back I've ever tried at this point.

Hi, you complained about the cable, an recommended buying another. I don’t like the cable either, but is there other cables out there? I could not find one, and when asking BD in Germany they only recommended rhe 3 m version of same cable.
@PassionforSound3 жыл бұрын
I haven't looked into it yet, to be honest, even though I did buy a pair of T5s. It is a standard connector into the cup so it would just be a matter of finding someone who can make a cable with narrow enough connectors that they don't get blocked by the moulding around the sockets. I'd recommend looking at custom cable companies like Norne, Aurealis Audio, Corpse Cable, Hart Audio, etc.

Yeah, I hear you. I think this hobby tends to create a demand for 'new and improved' because of the 'flavour of the month' syndrome. Older gear is often thought to be worse, but the reality is that the technology in headphones hasn't changed much for a LONG time!
