Dr. Bruce Greyson joins the podcast to discuss his research on Near Death Experiences spanning over decades.
Dr. Greyson is the Chester Carlson Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. He was previously on the medical faculty at the University of Michigan and the University of Connecticut, where he was Clinical Chief of Psychiatry.
For many of us, the question of whether or not consciousness survives bodily death is one of, if not the most important question one could ask. Dr. Greyson goes into great detail discussing captivating experiences from many patients he came into contact with, as well as the profound effects NDE's have on the experiencer's life.
We can't thank Dr. Greyson enough for taking the time to share his knowledge with us.
If you'd like to read more about Dr. Greyson's work, first-hand accounts and the scientific research being conducted in this area, please check out his book and website: 👇🏻 👇🏻 👇🏻

@@TheDadsDoomsdayGuide Sort of. By that I mean he was never an atheist. He’s always been Catholic but it was really a cultural thing. We’re a very Italian family so we just kind of did what everyone else did and went to church but never really talked about faith or spirituality. My dad is very left brained. Incredibly smart. Retired from the feds in 2012 and has always read science books and history books. This experience happened to him in 2020 and really changed everything. I didn’t have the experience so it is still taking me time to learn and integrate it into my own life but not my dad. 2 years on and he swears by it. It happened as a result of him being in critical condition with Covid. If it had been anyone else I think I would have taken it less seriously but my dad had always been so incredibly unemotional and doesn’t embellish anything. Him telling me this is very profound. To make it even more profound was after I heard this from him I started asking around and one of my cousins also had an experience when she was 7 years old in 1995 and dying of an intestinal infection brought about as a complication of cloacal extrophy. It changed her life as well and she had verifiable aspects due to her OBE. But she didn’t talk about it because she said it was so emotional.

Very interesting conversation. I love that the topic of NDEs is getting more recognized within the scientific community. Although there’s a long way to go, I’m convinced that researching NDEs has the opportunity to open up a lot of doors into the vast topic of consciousness and how it’s perceived - not only by science but mankind in general. I've experimented with various psychedelics plants (Psilocybin, Ayahuasca, DMT, and 5-MeO-DMT) coming from a non-religious background, but it wasn’t before I got into a habit of daily meditation that my perception of consciousness shifted from “it’s all in my brain” to “hmm, there might just be something more to this”, especially after I learned how to leave my body _(Astral Projection)_ without the help of any psychedelic tools.

I'm not religious at all but I wish I could meet and talk to this man someday. I wish more money was invested in this kind of research than bombs or crappy movies. I'm not sold but I do accept now that there are things about consciousness that we do not have definite answers to.

You know. A subject that should be added is Sleep Paralysis. I had a Demon Attack in 1995. My eyes opened. I felt my eyes open. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. A grotesque Dog like Entity snarling , exposing teeth. Ready to shred my face. It was NO dream! I had dreams all my life. The most terrifying experience of my life. I saw a video of a young woman who had an NDE. She also said she opened her eyes to darkness. My hair stood up. I was like “That’s what I experienced!!” More real than this life. I just can’t explain it. To complex. No one! No one will sway me otherwise!! Later , I was like “See Son. That was just a minute taste. Because I love you.”-God

Regarding the evolutionary value of NDEs: for that to be evolutionary relevant at all, it must happen to enough people… but back in the day, how common could it have been? It did happen, but it was probably pretty rare, as they didn't have technology to revive people. It's pretty rare now as well. There are some other ways you could argue though, but just thought I'd throw that out there.
@TheDadsDoomsdayGuide
@TheDadsDoomsdayGuide Жыл бұрын
Out of all the prosaic explanations for NDEs, I don't personally find evolutionary value to be a convincing explanation.
@xyhmo
@xyhmo Жыл бұрын
Right. One might even consider the cost: is it really an evolutionary advantage to equip every brain with a sophisticated machinery for creating NDEs when so few (esp back in the day) will actually benefit from it.

Seems that a lot of NDE'ers come back as pantheists. Pantheists say God is not a being but is being itself and we all share in that being and being is intelligent.

It is quite interesting. IMO you can't discount that. The idea that God/Consciousness/Mind is everything, and we go back to that source at the end is very powerful.

As you're probably aware NDE"s are inherently difficult to study due to a variety of factors. But there are those making efforts to do so. It can be frustrating to not have that scientific evidence one looks for. But dismissing it or trying to marginalize people's accounts isn't the way either IMO.
@Macceee
@Macceee Жыл бұрын
@@TheDadsDoomsdayGuide I'm not marginalizing their accounts, only Greysons's willingness to use their experiences as evidence of the afterlife. Nothing in his book "After" provides anything close to a controlled study, which is the scientific method. If you claim stuff and want to make some $ $ $ you better have some rock solid proof and a good foundation and evidence to support your claim. Speaking of $ $ $, the NDE:ers (including Eben Alexander) almost always write a book too, despite the fact that many of them claims to have become less materialistic and less interested in money, LOL! Sam Parnia's latest Aware II study shows brain activity, despite being flatlined. He found that out, because he used science, instead of anecdotes from 30 years ago, to find out what's going on.

The greatest insight into NDE's and why people have different experiences is from Bryan Melvin. Here's his "original" talk from some years ago. Couple years after that he was taken up to Heaven by Jesus to calm his nerves as the hell experience made him a nervous wreck.
