I was in business with an ND-YAG (Neodymium Yttrium, Aluminum, Garnet) laser doing this kind of work for machine shops--logos, part numbers, serial numbers, dials and scales, etc. Between 1998 and when I retired in 2013. My machine cost $30,000 (and that was used!) It weighed hundreds of pounds It used 30 amps of 220v and needed water cooling. The lamps had to be changed every 200 hrs or so and cost $100. The lamp ran at 24,000v! Most of my work was black anodized aluminum. Just the scan head with the galvos and mirrors would cost $10,000 to replace! The aux. lens for a larger field of view was $5,000. (It did beautiful work, though, and I was proud of it.) Fiber lasers are an amazing advancement! Looks like the same thing for $1,600, plug it into the wall, no cooling system needed.

Hi, learned about your channel from The Clack Shack. I'm newbie. Still trying to determine which direction I want to go. Is this just a hobby or is there a market for this type of engraving.
@JamesDeanDesigns10 ай бұрын
There is definitely a market. This can engrave so many things. Coins, knives, belt buckles, pens, phones, laptops, cuff links, tie clips, cigar cutters....I could go on for ages. I'm not going to say endless but it's a pretty long list of what you can engrave with this laser.

Do you happen to have a video explaining all the different fiber laser types (galvo, MOPA, etc.)? You did touch on it in this video, but a real good explaination of type and reasons why you a person would buy that type of laser would be great. I'm going to get a fiber laser as soon as possible, but don't know what to get and what wattage to buy. Thanks.

Was looking into a powerful laser system for etching Yeti bottles, engravings, coins (with heavy relief), cutting metal etc for SIGNS and making metal signs etched… Any recommendations on gear?? We are looking around a 10-20k price budget. And looking for all the accessories that I would need for doing all that… i was looking at fiber lasers from these companies around 80-100watt... any thoughts on them?? CLOUDRAY, OMTECH LASER, AEON LASERS, EPILOG LASERS, and MONPORT Lasers.
@pawelpirog581211 ай бұрын
Hi James! Awesome video. This laser looks very much like a 30W Raycus Monport that I got a few months ago. Did your machine come with EzCad 3 or 2? I’m interested in 2.5D engravings but not sure if it’s achievable with the hardware that my laser is equipped with. It has a motorized column, but I heard that if the laser came with an EzCad 2 then it won’t be compatible with either EzCad 3 nor Lightburn 3
@JamesDeanDesigns11 ай бұрын
Mine was EZCad 2, and yes is the Raycus module. You have to swap the driver over on your PC to make it work if you started with Ezcad but is really easy and can be found on @lasereverything channel

What machine and rotary attachment would you recommend for me? I want to engrave brass and/or stainless steel cylinders that are 2" long and .5" in diameter. I want the engrave VERY small text onto this cylinders, like text 1/2 mm tall, as crisp as possible. Thanks!!!
@JamesDeanDesignsАй бұрын
@tthxpx if you want really fine text you may want to look at a UV laser. It's laser beam is significantly finer and can do text as small as 0.3 easily. Also one of the most versatile lasers around. Im currently just reviewing the ComMarker Omni 1 and its lookong impressive. Code sale will also save you 5% commarker.com/product/commarker-omni1-laser-engraver/?ref=discount

@JamesDeanDesigns11 ай бұрын
They are different business cases to be honest. The laser attachment is great for doing larger areas, larger projects but something like a fiber laser is mainly about speed. For example engraving 100 pens with a diode laser would take a couple of hours, on a fibre laser perhaps less than half hour. However the fibre laser will not cut something out of a piece of plywood for example so it really depends on how you want to make money

James, could the ComMarker cut though 20 thou brass sheet? and would the brass likely deform under the heat generated? I am thinking applications similar to a plasma cutter, but for 15 and 20 thou brass? As an alternative to etching out brass shapes.
@JamesDeanDesigns11 ай бұрын
Yes it could. You have to find the balance between power and heat, more passes at faster speeds would be a way around it.

Hey James, if i use this laser on black anodized aluminum, what setting should i use to make white markings on it? (I dont want to carve into it, just on the surface) As white as possible please
@JamesDeanDesigns5 ай бұрын
Off the top of my head I don't know and it may vary between suppliers of the cards. I'd suggest doing a speed power test first

Hi does this have the ability to engrave on glass?? Thanks
@JamesDeanDesigns9 ай бұрын
Sort of. The wavelength of this laser passes through glass but you can apply something to the surface of the glass to help it engrave. For example some people apply a thin layer of washable paint that allows them to engrave glass

@coreyhol general rule is buy the best you can, so if you can afford the 60w and are treating it as a business investment then yes go for that as it will ultimately save you time (which is money). I've had this since November last year.

@JamesDeanDesigns11 ай бұрын
The RRP is $1999 but there will always be an offer on. For example the sceen shot in the video is the "valentines day sale".... valentines day is not exactly a reason to buy a fibre laser. Next there will be a spring/Easter sale on and something for the month after. Its just what a lot of companies do, the RRP price is rarely the normal price

@JamesDeanDesigns11 ай бұрын
The laser pecker 4 is a low powered hybrid. I never quite figured out who this was marketed at. The infrared laser is only 2w which is pretty low so yes it will achieve similar result eventually when burning of paint but something like the coin would take about a day to achieve and considering they are in a similar price bracket I'd recomend having the machine that's 10x more powerful and has a larger working area.
