My great-grandmother was institutionalized on and off from 1918 to 1947. My great grandfather would check her out, she'd get pregnant, have the baby , have an "episode," and be thrown back in. She was finally thrown back in for good after my grandmother was born in 1921. She died in Austin State Hospital (Texas Lunatic Asylum) and is buried in an unmarked grave in their cemetery ( which is a Texas landmark and you can't change the marker) because my great grandfather had basically washed his hands of her. It breaks my heart.

Your story is very similar to what my aunt was involved with. She was a retired Army nurse and had an arrangement with an anesthesiologist who had 9 children. She moved in as the "governess " because his wife had a breakdown after the 7th, then was lost completely after the 9th. He would never divorce her because they were devout Catholics. The hypocrisy right?! I finally caught on when she was still living with him after the youngest was long gone 😊. Duh. They finally married after his wife died. They were both in their 80's. Apparently, he also washed his hands of any responsibility regarding her care, and when they retired in FL, everything was put in my aunt's name so he couldn't be tracked down.

I find it so interesting to see these "revisits" to places they went when they have had time to think about things and analyze how they feel about the situations and evidence and the people involved. When they go to sanitoriums or asylums and trying to remember the lack of technology and information when putting things into perspective is another fascinating angle of the situation.

When I was a little girl the hospital was still open and I use to play on the grounds all the time because it was beautiful. The patients never bothered us and we never bothered them..also my grandfather was killed there in 1971. He was in his 80s but in his mind he thought he was in his 20s and got in a fight with some young guy who literally beat the crap out of him. So everytime I walk in that building I yell "Hi grandpa" and let me tell ya what I have gotten a couple of private tours and gone into places where the normal tourists don't go. I also took one of their tours and captured a picture of a ghost in the female quarters in the mirror. She was standing next to me and at the time no one else was around when I took the picture.

So about the serial killers and how that sort of works I can say vicariously from the knowledge of a psychiatrist with 45 plus years experience in the public sector that people who kill or have killed may feel anxious and get very intrusive thoughts about doing it. However, some of them not all, experience maniac depression afterwards ( after a murder).
