What does it mean to be Black and gay in the UK? Back in 2010, GMFA explored the life experiences of a group of men who all too often have been rendered invisible in history and stigmatised by their own communities because of their sexuality and race.
Focusing on a range of Black gay men of different ages and cultural backgrounds, Beyond Labels looks at how racism and homophobia can impact upon the construction of a healthy Black and gay identity.
Featuring Theodore Brown, Vernal Scott, Christian Neckles, Dejay Scott and John Noel Gylnn.
Produced by GMFA - the gay men's health project. Filmed by Jaime Sylla. Funded by Big Lottery.

Thank you to all 5 of you for this wonderful documentary, very much enjoyed by this 57 year old white gay male. I abhor any, and every form of racism. Each of you gave a real insight into your own personalities, individual views and experiences. By the end of this programme, I feel that we, as viewers were already getting to know each of you. To be able to do that in such a comparatively short time-frame is quite some doing. I hope life is being kind to you all x

Their homophobia hasn't extinguished gay life. In fact, the opposite is occurring. I suspect that there is an inverse relationship between homophobia and the occurrence of gayness in the community. The more they fight against gay life, the stronger gay awareness becomes. I suspect also that when this pandemic is over and all the dust has been cleared away that the occurrence of gay life in the black community will be stronger than ever.

I am proud to be gay. I am Latino and face the same issue in the USA. But I always say fuck whatever others think. I am who I am and proud of who I am and that’s what matters. The rest of society isn’t going to pay my bills to care about them at all.🤗

This is coming from a straight, white guy from the US. I've seen first hand the stress this struggle has put on my friends of all ethnic backgrounds, but especially people of color. Fwiw, I can promise any of you going through it that any friend worth keeping probably already senses you're struggling, won't bat at a lash when you tell them, and will never not be your buddy.

The link between homophobia and our patriarchal society is bang on . So many of our overt boundaries customs and taboos are delineated by the history of supposed male primacy and control of power . Its about time the patriarcal paradigm was examined , much of it is redundant and poisons society . The problem we have is men and boys feel their dominance is implicit and unquestionable, even ceding a tiny bit of agency to others outside the almost totally dominant paternal ubiquity feels to them like their world is coming apart around them . Many males see any attempt by women ,for example, to share a small amount of the rights and responsibilities inherent in our society as an out and out assault on them , and they scatter shouting 'to the barricades !' This program has some great contributors, many thanks to all involved .

Números:23 [19] "Elohim no es un humano que miente ni como un hijo de hombre para ser amenazado. ¿Dirá El y no lo hará? ¿Hablará El y no cumplirá Su palabra? Eclesiastés:2 [25] Porque ¿quién comerá y quién beberá sin El? [26] Pues para el hombre que es bueno a los ojos de Elohim, El da sabiduría, conocimiento y alegría; pero al pecador El da problemas, la tarea de coleccionar y acumular cosas para dejar a aquel que es bueno a los ojos de Elohim. Esto también es vanidad y rebeldía de ruaj.

Stats do not support this. Our society won't support straight successful Black men and women. Especially if they are over achievers. This is why most of our Black successful people are gay because it is more accepted to be than to be a role model successful straight Black "rock star".
