IFR route planning can be confusing and intimidating. Thank you for shining a light on this complexity and giving us tips for successful routing.

Didn't know that Flight Aware can also be used that way for IFR route planning - thank you for a great video!

This is fantastic and stuff like this is what I was looking for when I was learning. I wish controllers would be more succinct and articulate during the route portion. RV, Waypoints, Victor airways, and headings. Any controllers watching, a different tone/pause for each. Sometimes it's very rambly and I'll miss something, then the controller gets mad.

Great topic; SkyVector also has excellent preferred routing available, thanks for sharing.

Fun fact whether you are VFR or IFR you're always operating in the national airspace system... Talking to ATC or not is a different story. Great video!

I recognized that vZBW SOP the moment I saw it. VATSIM ARTCCs featuring in an Air Safety Institute video is cool!

It’s a lot easier than it used to be. Many years ago when we all flew with charts it could take 5 or 10 minutes of studying the chart to understand IFR routing in complex airspace. Compared to that it’s super simple now.

Congratulations on working for the Air Safety Institute. Super cool clearance, I wonder if it's different from your original plan? 🇺🇲🦅

Another nice trick in Foreflight is to cancel your filed flight after receiving the new expected route. Refile with the new route and when you go to get your clearance, it’ll just be “as filed” with no full read back required or changes from ATC. Makes our job and ATCs even easier.
@maddiemac365 Жыл бұрын
Wait what do you mean? “Cancel filed flight after receiving new expected route.” Don’t you only receive this route once you’re already in the airplane getting your clearance?
@mkrakoff Жыл бұрын
@@maddiemac365 using foreflight you can file ahead of time, even the day before. At some point you’ll get an email or foreflight message with an updated route if they are going to change it on you. At that point I just cancel and refill the new route. When I get in the plane and call clearance I get as filed because I filed exactly what they were going to give me.

I'm very early in Instrument planning, and I'm wondering how - when ready to do the long IFR XC - you request specific approaches. If I'm going to KHFD and I want to use the VOR-A, would you request that somehow during filing, or would you ask after being handed to Approach?

Great but, what do you do when ATC wants to send you out over water anyway, well beyond gliding distance?
@AirSafetyInstitute Жыл бұрын
Good question! You can always decline a clearance and refile.
@Arp1757 Жыл бұрын
@@AirSafetyInstitute in my case, I launched using the initial clearance. When they sent me to the over-water waypoint, I explained that I had no flotation and requested Direct To the following waypoint over land. They were okay with that. Similarly, I prefer to fly at high altitudes when coming down the Chesapeake Bay towards Norfolk, VA, on my way home to Chesapeake Regional. Approach always begins my descent too soon, but they've always agreed to leave me up there longer when I explained I wanted the glide distance.

9:45 false, they would never read those VORs in phonetics, they would just lead you wondering what those fixes are until you eventually read back, can you spell that out for me 😂
