This is my understanding of this animation. The soldiers in this are made of paper to represent their lives. As they are killed, their stories burn and are destroyed as they are forgotten with the other thousands of deaths. The two boys are not really there. The animation takes place in their imagination as they read their grandfather's (or whatever he is to them) account of the battle he was in (which i believe is D Day but that is a guess). Their grand father is the only human soldier because they know him more as a person then they do the people, which they see as stories. There is a lot of symbolism in this that I have probably failed to see, but hoped this helped or was interesting.

Fantastic, I understood it, as my Grandfather had his box, I found his letters to my Grandmother during WW2. full of hope,, love and pain, as he said it, another mate for St Peter. Later letters he just said, Alf, Mike (old John's lad, Butcher, from Entwistle St,) Bert, and Paddy, Pearlies got them ( meaning the Pearly Gates), all those letters home, some from their commanding officers. Some scribbled by the chaps themselves, left in they're gear, in case they never came back. Very deep, it deserves the reward.

I look at this and I weep for the youth of this world doesn't truly know what their great great-grandfathers and great great great grandfathers went through as the climbed into those landing boats that was to take them ashore where some would be gun down as soon as the ramps dropped. Soldiers of US Army, British Commandos, Canadian Army, US Coast Guard, US Navy, US Air Force and RAF all took part in Operation Overload on the 6th of June, 1944 to liberate France from the German occupation.

Before it was half way done, I was in tears. My grandfather was at Normandy, when he told me about running across the beaches, finding his cousin dead in the sand, about how scared he was as an 18 year old straight out of the woods of Maine, I cried for the sweet hearted old man that raised me and helped me be the person I am today. I try to make my daughter understand how important it is to listen to the stories of our grandparents and great grand parents. In all of history, they have been the ones to witness so much change and still be here to tell the younger generations. World Wars, depressions, the automobile, mainstream electricity and technology, the good and the bad. Those who witnessed such events are leaving us and it's important to keep those stories alive.

Well done ESMA. A lot of symbolism which can be interpreted many ways. Such as last letters home to loved ones, that may have never reached them. Too many things I seen in this to list out here. But, you did very well with this animation. War is hell, it comes with heavy price. But sometimes you just have to stand your ground no matter the price.
