Anciients is definitely one of the best modern prog metal bands who I can tell take a lot of influence from Mastodon, Opeth, Alice In Chains, and later era Death. Voice of the Void was one of the best albums of 2016 and this new album is just amazing and I think their best album to date.

This is a sidebar but relates in a way to this review: in 2016, when listening to a feature on Sirius XM that was highlighting bands that were "giving hope for the future of metal," I was introduced to Anciients, Khemmis, Ahab, Cult of Luna, and others. I hadn't really heard much from any of these bands prior to this and now they are regulator rotators for me, especially Khemmis and Anciients. And nothing stuck with me more than Anciients' song "Incantations" from VotV... What an amazing album, song, and band. So thanks Sirius XM because Anciients (and others) are fucking awesome and their catalog(s) are phenomenal. As it relates to this album, it feels to have a brighter soul than VotV (despite its wickedly dark and awesome cover art and, at times, the somewhat contemplative yet dark lyrics). There's more prog-rock on this than what I was anticipating which keeps the band fresh, too. Verdict is out where things ranks for me within their discography but it's a strong album front to back. Honestly, my inability to just know where to place this or rank it is a compliment to their entire output from their first EP on more than it's a reflection on this album. Great review too, man. I have been a fan since 2013. So excited for new matierial that really kicks ass. I respect the re-recording of the older tracks although I do prefer the original mixes. There is something so raw about their first EP. These guys have really knocked it out of the with BTROTS. Welcome back Anciients.

Fantastic record, thanks for the recommendation. And guess what, one of my favourite record stores had one of the limited vinyl editions (transparanet black and blue marbled) in stock. Needless to say I bought it immediately. Now excuse me, I have to listen to Beyond The Reach Of The Sun for a fourth time today. Cheers!
