@@sam_fromMD I think its more that every org that was expecting some sort of profit from esports is imploding as it becomes clear that thats never gonna be the case. @@coryyoung7544 The $2mil prize pool isn't going to continue. We've consistently been getting less than that for the CPT so $2mil all of a sudden is most likely just going to be for the launch year of SF6, and then significantly decrease next year. It's essentially just another way to promote their title and get more eyes on the CPT (so marketing). EVO is the only thing that we can expect to continue since that's a low bar.

Apparently the average player in the LCS (league of legends competition) makes over $400k a year (according to top google search, I didn’t look that hard.) For a sport that doesn’t make any money that’s insane. Even supporting 2 players with that pay could cripple an organization if there is no profit. You can really tell companies threw money into this sport with no real thought about how they could make any in return. I feel like a lot more shutdowns are going to be coming soon.

@@neverknowsbest. Nintendo is notorious for making a lot of their older games damn near impossible to access and then shuts down the biggest melee tournament because they used an emulator to play while owning a physical copy despite the game being over 2 decades old and the pain in the ass it would be to get multiple copies, consoles in good condition and recording equipment. Even though all this tournament will do is bring positive attention to Nintendo

E-sports in the US are primarily supported by investors who see places like South Korea where it has caught on at a huge level, and are looking to be the ones to benefit where it caches on in the rest of the world. They want to own the next NFL, NBA, or MLB. I'm sure there will be a time that it catches on, and likely in the near future, but it hasn't been a natural culture shift yet that has recgnition in average households. Honestly, there's a streaming (and especially video game streaming) bubble that is getting ready to burst alongside the other economic woes. As inflation continues, less money will be spent on entertainment. Streamers will be paid less and subscriptions will go down. There is no galvanized community in the gaming space to serve as a strong foundation for a new entertainment sector like e-sports. There will have to be some growing pains that unify a customer base to want enough of the same thing for it to be successful.
@allinefeyn9224

Can't speak for other e-sports but at least League in NA is full of average players that are vastly overpaid because of some accomplishments 10 years ago. Its no surprise that nobody wants to watch that crap. The sc2 NA weekly tournaments are consistently won by Korean or European players despite the ping disadvantage.Their solution to throwing money at the problem not working is throwing even more money at it and then be surprised it fails.

Most Esports really don’t make THAT much money, outside of the game dev sponsoring prizes, or snagging huge (usually crypto) sponsors. Fighting games, and also Smash, historically have not had great prize support, and survived largely on the passion of the players to keep things going

Probably a lack of sponsers. No company wants to spend money on an event. That may or may not get shut down by Nintendo. Eventually they run smaller events with less viewership and smaller sponsorship deals. thus bringing a downwards spiral of money loss.

The return on the sponsorship is dogshit compared to spending that money on running ads or even sponsoring KZbinrs/streamers. There's always going to be companies that run events though. Vans ran Warped Tour for 20 years despite it being a money drain. I just can't imagine them running as many as they had been the last couple years.

Honestly, Esports is dead. It started as a kind of niche area in the mid to late 2000s, with MLG. A sudden boom later on caused corporate companies to start, and many others to quickly get in on the perceived gold rush. And then, when everyone realized it’s Ana crisp waste of money because you don’t even turn a real profit, everyone pulls out. It’s a shame because Esports was really coming on the scene, but video games will never amount to the level of actual physical sports.
