To be fair it really depends on the diffculty settings chosen for the game. Like on the harder difficulties the AI for the alien really just is complete BS and you essentially have to exploit game systems to the max plus rely on some rng to make it through the whole game

Alien: Isolation is still to this day one of the best horror games to ever be made. It's got the creepy atmosphere, it's got the feeling of hopelessness, it's got a monster that you can't kill. The game literally forces you to be paranoid at every possible turn or you will die and it is amazing. Not sure what the journalist was smoking that day when he reviewed Alien: Isolation, but I want a lot of it.

That Alien Isolation review hurts. I love that game so much and the AI for the alien is incredible. It's one of the most immersive and terrifying horror games I've ever played. You always feel like you're in constant danger. I feel like that IGN reviewer was just salty cause they kept getting killed by the alien. I wrote reviews a while ago for one of the biggest sites in my country and also wrote reviews for other media, like comic books. It was never really said outright, but the consensus was "Don't be too harsh or the publisher won't send us games in the future and we'll be on their blacklist". I gave a game 4/10, wrote the whole text for a 4/10 but when my boss published my review he changed the score to a 6/10

14:03 is a solid point. Gameplay is awesome, but had the story included more thoughtful decisions for Ellie in her revenge plight and have her pull back on some of those stabbings, I think it would have been better. There should have been more gamed decisions in more alternate routes or actions in the Hillcrest driving portion, the theatre chase scene, or the bit with Mel.

I think it was very purposeful about why and when everything happened. I understand not liking the whole "forcing" you to play as Abby but I think that was almost a fourth wall level choice. They wanted to see how far they could push YOU the player, not the characters. I don't think it worked all that well, but it was a very interesting idea

I remember when GameFreak trolled IGN in the next gen of pokemon games. Sun and Moon had a sort of camera mini game where you could try to snap photos of pokemon. I remember I was really excited for Alien Isolation and looked forward to it for a year. The night before it released I decided to look at the reviews at was met with IGN’s notorious review. My heart sank. I ultimately decided “screw it, I’m going to play it for myself and find out” that is still one of the best choice I’ve ever made. I’ve played through it like 12 times by this point and Even got the platinum trophy. I still to this day won’t even consider IGN reviews and when I do for games I’m unsure about, I check out immediately after I see Ryan’s name

No reviews at all only help publishers because they can just push out bug filled trash and not worry about reviews exposing said trash. @@LuciferWrld999 The idea behind a review is that someone who is critical and self-aware of their own bias provides details about the game that allow you to make a more informed opinion for yourself without spending the money on it. It isn't supposed to purely be an opinion piece that says "game stinky i no like." Of course, it's always been corrupt, even in the very early days of gaming when every review was published in a magazine, but there are more competently written reviews. IGN has always been notoriously aloof with its reviews. There is a very old one for a PSX shooter (I can't remember which one specifically, might have been Disruptor) where the reviewer complained incessantly about the "awful controls." Those controls? You use the left stick to move and right stick to aim and triggers to shoot. Yeah, he was really complaining about the standard controls for every modern console shooter, which weren't so standard at the time. Still, that wasn't even the first game to feature them -- Goldeneye had a similar control layout.

No review is perfect, there is no review that everyone will agree with. Even here I don't agree with everything Charlie says, because we all enjoy different things. For example I really enjoyed Death Stranding, but it's ok if Charlie doesn't. The person who reviewed God Hand also had a few other contentious reviews. IGN also re-reviewed it, basically called it a great game, but didn't give the game a score. And that is the whole point of IGN. Even though they wanted to give it a proper review because the previous one was wrong, probably complaining about how difficult it is, they still didn't want their opinion to override the original reviews, which is at odds with re-reviewing it in the first place. A lot of older reviews are barely reviews, but truncated synopsis just because they wanted to have the review out with a score. This is why a lot of older reviews are useless. At least the IGN ones.

the biggest problem is that the grading system does nothing. games are rated basically on a 7/10-10/10 scale anything else is rare so you basically have an out of 3 system, its just weird they use out of 10 but only give bad games arbitrarely low scores

If they were able to review every game released, they would make much more use of the lower end of the scale. But since they have limited staff and resources, it makes sense that they only review games that are anticipated by gamers, which inherently will be 6-9 scoring games generally. No one cares about a review for a 1-5 rating game that was probably already expected to get that score if anyone knew about it in the first place.

7/10 = 70% = a C (at least according to American grading scales) = Average. This is the basis for most 1-10 scale reviews. and on that same scale anything below 6 is technically a D or F of varying degrees of failure. When approached from this angle, it makes perfect sense. When approached from an emotional angle 7/10 is either too low or too high dependent on what the person complaining personally feels.

Long story short, you don’t give a shit about the win, half the time you have no idea what’s going on and the other half you’re just chatting shit with friends, so the whole experience is just the atmosphere of it, and its very fun. As a-pose to playing call of duty having a strategy optimising classes, most of the joy comes from getting the win.

I am a big, bug sucker for Ancient Egypt. I was reading about Egypt from (children) encyclopedias when I was 7, barely a year after I learned to read. I didn't like Origin's gameplay (I still think that stealth is too dumb and difficulty slider just affects damage numbers instead of awareness of enemy AI like in Dishonored 2 with its 50 different difficulty sliders), but damn, I was just charmed at the game's visuals and its huge world. My childhood passion was living before my eyes, even though it was Ellinistic Egypt and not the Ancient one. It's a very subjective reason to like this game, but it's nevertheless my favorite "modern" AC game.

I think the true issue is that, while they may not be getting paid directly for reviews, all of these review sites are dependent on game publishers for their livelihoods. You need to have working relationships with game studios to get things like interviews, behind the scenes/development news, on-site advertising, and early review copies of the games, and there are definitely studios that would cut off that access if they were constantly getting 6/10 reviews.

Or in the case of The Last of Us 2, the reviewer that gave the game a 10 was later hired by Naughty Dog. Gaming journalists are almost always intentionally disingenuous because they'll either be blacklisted by a studio/publisher for a bad review or they're getting bought that studio/publisher to give a raving review.

i actually agree with the 'too much water' con. unfortunately, the reviewers didn't convey their issue with it well. having as much water as ruby and sapphire have coupled with requiring 3 hms just for water travel and exploration is very tedious especially on repeated playthroughs.

Whirlpool is such an awful HM too. Surf, Strength, and Fly at least have some utility. I actually had a lot of fun in Sun/Moon where they had specific Pokemon for those actions and I could adjust my team better. It always felt like I had two slots filled up at all times for an HM slave

I actually liked Death Stranding. But I totally understand how the gameplay wouldn't appeal to everyone. At first glance I would have agreed, but somehow the strategy and everything involved with safely getting a large delivery from point A to B made it surprisingly engaging for me, even if technically I was just doing endless 'fetch quests'.

Literally the only gripe I have with death stranding is that I’m not sure what would entice me to going back to playing it. My first play through was surprisingly fun for me. I enjoy having tasks to do and categorizing loadouts along with some pretty exploration. With what little the game had to give in terms of gameplay, it does it well (though tripping and falling is kinda buggy). It’s just not appealing with what most want in games.

I am of opinion that its okay for peopleto dislike the game but people shouldnt view it as bad game because of that, not every game is for everyone, I am sure there are people who dislike souls-type or doom style games but that doesnt make them bad games, same way death stranding be viewed. I mean there truck simulator games that some people enjoy, there is enough of such people for more of such games being developed yet for other people playing such games would be extremly miserable.

The most infuriating game reception I've seen has to be The Last Guardian. Reviewers demonstrated such a lack of understanding of tradeoffs in game design. For all the complaints about Trico's 'unresponsiveness', they were all too narrow-minded to ask why he was designed that way. Turns out wild animals you meet don't immediately respond to your every command. They might get confused if you spam commands at them. Almost as if Team ICO were trying to make him realistic to prioritize immersion over mechanical convenience.

its a stylistic choice vs a mechanics choice. theres always going to be a division of opinion depending on who you are. OMORI is padded out extremely long, but it can be excused as a metaphor for omori being in the dreamstate for a long time (story related). i would prefer the game to be shorter, even if the events had slightly less meaning, because it would be less tedious & more fun.

​@@1337Figaro The problem is you're expecting it to be fun. Fun isn't the only thing games have to offer. The Last Guardian is trying to appeal to other emotions. Imagine you'd never engaged in the horror genera before (including cinema) and played Alien Isolation expecting an FPS. You'd be right to say it's not fun and it's not a good FPS, but you'd lack the frame of reference to see the value in the game. In the same way, I'm guessing a lot of people who didn't enjoy The Last Guardian are unfamiliar with cinematic platformers. After all, it's a very niche genera. And TLG's mechanics lean heavily on the experiential side, even for the genera.

Alien was a magnificent game with great gameplay and a shitload of effort on it's mechanics . Journalists straight up killed it for no reason. Such a waste and now because of poor sales we won't even get a sequel.

The game is a mixed bag. In terms of visuals and sound design it's excellent, but the actual gameplay gets pretty tedious. Once the initial shock value of dying to a xenomorph wears off, it just becomes a slow, tedious and repetitive experience. The story was a complete let down and did absolutely nothing with the license.

The game got 24 award nominations (including several GOTY awards), won 13, and got rave reviews from every publication except IGN, Gamespot, and Polygon. The Metacritic is an 83/100. On what planet did journalists kill this game? It didn't even necessarily sell poorly, it just didn't sell what sega wanted. It's not getting a sequel because even if Creative Assembly were interested in it (which they aren't) Sega lost the rights to Alien shortly after the game came out. Like the amount of fanboy salt and cope over 1 negative review of this game is astounding.

I think IGN gave it a fair score. All their criticism is valid here. On nightmare the Alien AI is so bullshit and literally tethered to the player. You end up frustrated instead of scared of the Alien. You could tone down the difficulty but then, you will have more tools to deal with the Alien, that is also less aggressive on top of it. All of this wouldn't be a problem if the game didn't show its full hand early on and then dragged on for another 30 hrs, but it does sadly. I think it's probably still worth playing through once, but the 5.9 is a fair score in my eye.

It's not just fear of being attacked that causes inflated scores. A lot of it is the rush of trying to publish too quickly and the inherent nepotism of the industry. Games journalists are desperate for early access to game titles if they're going to compete with the review releases of one another, so they build friendships in the industry in order to secure early game copies. Those friendships inherently incentivize positivity and unearned praise, or at least an aversion to harsher criticism, if they want to keep that early access to titles. The flip side of this is the harsh criticisms of the typical gamer, ironically fostered at least in part during the 90's and 00's by the overtly positive video game journalism environment, which incentivizes reviewers to occasionally flip the script and become overtly scornful when they believe that gamers might likewise hate on a title. It's just an attempt to fit in with gamer attitudes, despite having a completely different incentive towards what they play -- instead of BEING gamers, they're trying to study and emulate gamer attitudes as fast as possible. That's why they occasionally miss the mark so badly. The end result is that most video game reviewers are prone to unnecessary extremes and rushing through with their assessments, rather than just sitting with a game's experiences the way a gamer typically would.

Just to note, when IGN said "too much water", they mostly meant too much water type pokemon. This is because all of Team Aqua uses water type pokemon and you often have to surf over or dive into water (which has water type pokemon in it). This means you MUST have an electric type in your team to counter all of the water types.
