@@bestieboots Thanks so much for your kind words and support. It is both a strength and weakness of what I'm doing. Memory touches everything (or everything is in memory). Overall, I think that's great, even if it's at the cost of decentralization across the board.

I know the memory palace works. Over 50 tears ago a memory expert taught us a form using a car. The hood ornament was one, windshield was two, dashboard was three, glove box was 4, and so on until we got to 15. He then read off a list of items and had us place them in each location of the car starting with one. Each item was placed and we were to imagine something sort of weird. For instance, the item for the brake pedal was "bishop." We could imagine a bishop having his head squashed when we applied the brake. (Ewww) Thing is - it's now over 50 years later and even though I haven't used this technique, I still remember almost every one of the places and numbers on the car, but also the list of items. And what you say about writing? College for me was a breeze since I love to improve my penmanship. Every class had two notebooks. I used one to take notes in class. That night I got out the second notebook, organized my notes, added diagrams when needed, and re-wrote everything neatly and with as perfect penmanship I could manage (which happens to be quite lovely.) Done! When test time rolled around, I simply took a quick tour of my second notebook and aced the test. It left plenty of time for parties. Don't take this the wrong way, buuuut - there's something quite lovable about you 😃
@AnthonyMetivierMMM5 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if it's true, but there have been a few people comment on how penmanship efforts lead to better memory. And someone I know with great memory is into calligraphy and was on the podcast a while back: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXqoiKetbadgoJY It is a testament to the technique that you remember these details from decades ago. Just imagine using it in earnest distributed across a network of locations. It's certainly not for everyone, and there are other ways to get things remembered. But it's like "writing in the mind" and I still write out by hand what I've memorized to get the best of all possible worlds. Thanks for sharing your experiences and talk soon!

Can you state in your own words what it is that you didn't get? Chances are that if I don't know what it is you didn't understand, I won't be able to explain it any better. On top of that, wording out what we don't understand is a powerful comprehension strategy. One step further: As I discussed in the video above, sometimes certain things have to be put into action *without* understanding in order for the energy of perspective to open up. Please say more and we'll take it from there. :-)

Very interesting considerations for extending the memory palace into a while city, but one thing... Actually two things I want to ask you. For one category like science, is there going to be alphabetical memory palaces (a-z) within the city 🏙️ or is it going to be free for all (it might be in the video I think)? Yes, you could start that way. But if I were to start over again, I would go straight from Major System to PAO as described here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZjXh4RqbbuaeZY Nothing wrong with Major only, but I waited too long to upgrade given all of the additional things it allows you to do when you work out your Major into this nearly automatic configuration of bi-directional tools. More about its bidirectionality is in the video on Aristotle's Nuclear Alphabet, especially near the end.

Hello Anthony. I was wondering if you ever studied something on Mushashi and if so, if you could talk about it. Are you into History? What's your favourite thing in science?
@AnthonyMetivierMMM5 ай бұрын
I used to a picture of him on my wall when I was a kid. Any specific questions or angles of curiosity you have about him or his writings? Science is my favorite thing. As long as those things people are talking about accord to science, then those things are my favorite. Have you read my thoughts on science in The Victorious Mind? I set the terms of the game for it in that book and it explains more about why science is my favorite thing in science, something not enough people accord with all that well.

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Really?! That's cool. I only got to know Musashi when I was older. Do you recommend a book(or books) to learn more about him? I remember I got stuck with the memorization of the Bhagavad Gita, and the I gave up the whole book. Lately I have been doing what you advise, and creating Memory Palaces for every letter of the alphabet. And I have been revising the images for numbers in the Palaces. What's the point of pie other than to impress
@AnthonyMetivierMMM8 күн бұрын
I can see it being useful for memory competitions and demonstrations. The fact that it is done to impress doesn't diminish it's ability to both provide proof of concept and inspire interest, wonder and encourage some people to give the techniques a try. So although I do agree that it's not fully impressive to do things just to impress and I often comment on the problem, it does play its role. It can be both useful and useless without contradiction, and "true contradictions" come up many times in the art of memory. Indeed, the art of memory is founded upon them in my view.

Hi Anthony, Going to be a bit of a long comment. I'm starting uni math in a few months and wondering how significant good memory is for math. Does it help understand complex stuff easier? Want to be sure before buying your course (which I do plan to do either way for learning Japanese later, but tight on money now). Will it give me a significant advantage in my math course? And how long does it take to go through the course in its entirety?
@AnthonyMetivierMMM5 ай бұрын
Thanks for your question. There are different ways to answer this question. First, there's the value of having strong working memory. That's just a good in itself and very significant. Much more important than high IQ as a predictor of performance in several studies I've read. Then there's the ability to memorize a wide variety of things: the names of formulas and theorems, for example. You can also better visual shapes and flows and intensities at the conceptual level, etc. So I'd say go all in on mnemonics. At the end of the day, the thinking through and development of your own mnemonic systems will do your brain and memory a lot of good.

Im gonna need so many memory palaces to do this
@mangomight79385 ай бұрын
Locis/memory palace items can be "zoomed in" making them into palaces of their own. Can be useful when you have to create a hierarchical structure. The least confusing structure would contain only two dimensions i.e. units/subunits. So maybe having one memory palace for each chapter would suffice. You would have to zoom in on each sub chapter loci and then place locis for topics and facts mixed together onto them like they were normal memory palaces. The less details the easier it would be to maintain, hopefully your natural memory can make up for it.
