I grew up in Tucson and still live there. We often shopped at that location. My mom even called my grandfather that day because she was worried he was there. Thankfully he was home. This sparked so much terror, and paranoia. Schools and churches began doing lockdown drills more often, explaining to us that there are bad people in the world. A lot of children’s sense of security was shattered with those lessons. As an adult, I studied at the colleges he filmed in his videos. In one of my criminology classes, we watched the videos he took and walked the same paths he took. It’s been so long, but our community still feels shaken up.

You cannot force a person to get medical treatment, whether it be physical or mental. In cases like this that turns out to be a bad thing but much of the time, it's a very good thing that we've moved away from the days when you could randomly force people into mental institutions. Those places were little better than hellholes much of the times and half the time, the people forced there by their family had absolutely nothing wrong with them other than maybe not agreeing with them or their family not liking how they chose to live their life. This still happens in other countries and it's definitely not a good thing.

We have a mental illness crisis in America. If we would actually teach people to look out for the signs, we could avoid tragedies like these. I do find it funny that if a drunk driver kills someone, we don't cry out for car control. According to the CDC, we average about 13,500 gun deaths in America (we aren't even close to the highest) Half of those are suicides, 10 to 15% accidental. The number of lives saved by firearms 2 to 3 million. Gun owners are 4 or 5 times more likely to obey laws than even police officers. Lastly the majority of homicides are committed by criminal's who have the gun illegally to start with so I don't think they will turn them in voluntarily.

Its a complete tragedy, and Im obviously not saying anyone can just get away with murder or violence due to mental health, but paranoid schizophrenia is a terrifying illness to have and while in a psychotic state you really aren't mentally competent. I feel for the victims and their families first, however I truly feel perps with the degree of mental instability this young man showed, should be in a locked mental facility. Not prison. Gun laws need to be changed. Has worked for other countries like my own, Australia.
@tessiepinkman3 жыл бұрын
YES, THIS! if everyone thought like you (and me) i think the world would be a better place. nobody who's THIS sick should be in prison, people like him should ALWAYS be in a mental hospital. ALWAYS. as someone who's struggling with another diagnosis that makes me prone to psychosis and paranoid periods, this is deeply personal for me. because ME, the periods when i'm free from paranoia and psychosis, would never, ever hurt someone. so if the "other" me, that comes from a land of commplete and utter fear of everyone and everything, with extreme visual and auditorial halucinations, if that "me" would hurt anybody - the real me, while not sick, would be crushed. and i get that people would want "justice" but is justice really to lock up someone sick inside a prison? in my country people get shorter prison time, because we put alot of effort into trying to rehabilitate, and would you want someone who's sick as fuck who hasn't gotten the help they needed because they were in prison instead of in a psychiatric facility as your neighbour when the time is up? so for me it's the only rational solution in a situation like that, to get me, you, whoever's done something bad while *sick* the help that's needed so that nothing like that never ever happens again. and that help you cannot get in a fucking prison. just one of many reasons i'm glad to be born in sweden and living in norway, there's no way somebody that sick would ever end up in prison here, and i guess it's about the same in australia? have nearly only heard good things, anyway.

It's designed to make the poor fail and the cost of college and university is just insane when you consider that you can go just south of the boarder and pay an ⅛ of the cost and get an education that's on par with ivy league universities in the USA. But as the child of a paranoid schizophrenic I feel for him the system royally fucked him by not being diagnosed and medicated sooner. The only problem with doing a psych eval in order to be allowed to get a gun is that anyone intelligent, mentally ill or not, can easily pass with flying colors. It’s quite easy to know what a proper answer would be to any of the questions asked in order to seem mentally fit. So you’d really only be getting the guns out of the hands of the mentally ill who are also unintelligent. Which I guess would be a start but even that is a VERY small portion of the mentally ill.

It's kind of empowering to know that if there is an active shooter, they CAN be stopped if enough people are willing to try. They most definitely saved some lives. (I realize people are terrified in these type of situations and not always able/willing to think about stopping the shooter and risk death). Also kudos to the one gun shop owner who refused to sell him bullets. Perhaps there needs to be some type of legislation where the shop owners are required to report odd behavior so other stores are also alerted that for like 48hrs or something the person cannot buy bullets.

Man it’s wild, I was 11 when this happened. I grew up in Oro Valley like 25 minutes from the Safeway. I played my little league all star game at Christina Taylor Green’s field (the little girl who was shot). I went to, and currently attend, pima community college and walked exactly where he walked. I never saw those videos of him walking around the campus, very eerie seeing him in front of the classes I attended.

This case is a perfect representation of the 2 things keeping America a 3rd world country - no national healthcare system, which could have stopped this before it happened and rampant gun use with excuses and delusions keeping it that way. If only 1 of the things i mentioned was brought up to the standard of 1st world countries, many many lives would be saved now and in the future.
@curiouser-and-curiouser Жыл бұрын
America's a third world country? Interesting. I have a few questions. How would a government controlled health system prevent a situation like this? Can psychiatrists & psychologists determine if someone will become a murderer & if so, is there a treatment plan that can stop it? Why do the people that can afford it purchase their own health insurance in these 1st world countries that have national health coverage? Who in their right mind would want the government to be in charge of their health care? Why were so many civilians killed in these countries by their governments who were so concerned about the safety of the people that they confiscated all the guns in order to protect them? Turkey; Soviet Union; China; Guatemala; Uganda; Cambodia; Rwanda

The panties thing, that just stands out as such a bizarre thing, I mean not that he’d be into wearing them, they’re a been a few other mass shooters who did that… but the fact he shared those shots online in some way fees like a cry for help, that he on some level knew he was messed in the head and wanted people to know this.
@mommy2libras3 жыл бұрын
Yeah and not even that he shared them though, but that he sought out a place that would develop them in the middle of the night then made it a point to pick them up also in the middle of the night/pre-dawn morning and share them online. Because by then, it was hard to find places to develop actual film, and even where I lived- a mid sized city- i never had a place that would do it in the middleof the night. Like he just had to do it before he went and committed this horrible act.

It is my opinion that one of the biggest draw backs of social media is the fact that any person will find like minded individuals and thus think that their views are supported and correct. That makes them feel validated and makes them do and say things they might not have done 30 years ago. It is also my opinion that because we now know much more about mental health and because it is so widely 'supported', we feel like we cannot "call out" someone because we think they might have a mental illness because that is wrong and you could be attacked for it by keyboard warriors. We need to be supportive and understanding.. We need to stay on the 'right side' to avoid being 'cancelled'. But, i also see a lot of attacking, bullying and canceling regarding some of the stupidest things because the attackers took offense to something stupid.

“Gold and silver are the only currencies worth believing in” This guy obviously never heard of skilled trades. That’s literally the only thing that will matter if the world fell apart. I mean, if he had such an issue with the American government there’s literally dozens of other western countries that are completely opposite to it. Countries where education is important and in some cases, the politicians aren’t corrupt.

You are absolutely right - if I were a teenager these days, I'd choose to become an apprentice of some sort, rather than going to college again. When paper money loses its worth, gold and silver will go the same way eventually. What's left is trading goods or skills - building or repairing stuff, basic healthcare, growing food. No one's gonna need business analysts and the like.
