*Want to WIN an RC Car for as little as $1/£1?* Check out my current RC Raffles here: raffall.com/beyondrc Hope you enjoyed today's video which is aimed at the RC Beginners out there! Always be safe around lipos, always charge at 1C for maximum safety for example: 2.2a for a 2200mah pack, 5.0a for a 5000mah pack & 5.5a for a 5500mah pack and so on. Always use caution when charging and a Lipo Bag if possible. Lipo batteries are totally safe and found in many devices around your home but always use care and follow correct procedure. Cheers guys and if you have any questions feel free drop them down below! See you on the next one! 👍😀

Super helpful to a LiPo newbie like me who hasn’t plucked up the courage to start charging until I’ve got answers to the questions that the manual doesn’t really address properly. Also reassuring to hear that safety issues are rare and as long as you respect the rules you’re unlikely to have an issue. Thank you

I charge my Lipo batteries with a balance charger in a Lipo bag with a metal cookie sheet under it. I never leave them un attended. I store them in an ammo box in a cool dry place. I check the wires after each use to make sure nothing is damaged. I also make sure to storage charge them if I am not going to use them for a while. I check them in the winter months and give them another storage charge. It keeps them happy and me too. lol I us the discharge rate that the manufacture of the RC recommends.

If you use a Lipo battery charger, that’s not a expensive balance charger that comes from the manufacture stop using it and get a more expensive charger that balances the battery because it will greatly help the battery, especially the chargers nowadays that have a discharge/charge/ storage option modes

Your video has a lot of good information in it, and you have pretty good stage presence. If I may make a few suggestions: 1. Break your video up into "chapters", so folks can skip around and also know what topic is being talked about at any given time. 2. Some of your informational slides were missing critical headers. For example, you were going over pros and cons, but for two different things (LiPo, and then NiCa), but from a visual standpoint it was unclear which was being discussed without scrubbing to the beginning (see #1) and listening to the intro.
@beyondRC

1. Chapters now added almost 3 years after originally publishing this video. I'm sure I was meant to do this at the time but forgot haha! 2. The addition of the chapters should help to determine the difference now. Thank for the feedback :)

@beyondRC

No the electronics will only use what they need you could run a very high C rating pack on a low end RC for example but would be a waste. The average is 20c-50c and most applications will run those C ratings just fine. 100c+ packs are usually wasted on most people unless running very high end and powerful builds. Hope this helps

Hi, i have a 1300 mah battery and it is rated 30 C. Which means it can provide 39 A of continuous current. But i am using a 50 A esc and my brushless motor only draws 17 Amps maximum. Am i safe to use this setup? and as the esc has higher amp, will it draw 50a from the battery or will it only draw how much current the motor needs (Which is 17A)?
@MysteriMaan
@MysteriMaan 2 ай бұрын
Can someone answer this. Id like to know as well
@MysteriMaan
@MysteriMaan 2 ай бұрын
From my limited knowledge, i think this means that the ESC is safe to go to 50amps so the ESC wont burn out. And since your motor only runs 17amps, its theoratically safe. The ESC will not suck out 50amps, that power has to go somewhere, and since your motor will not go anywhere close to it, its safe.
@mattijah_s
@mattijah_s 2 ай бұрын
Yes, you are good. ESC can handle max 50A, but since the motor only draws 17A that will be the max supplied or drawn respectively. Voltage is more important here - if you are trying to avoid burning shit

My Maverick Quantum has options ranging from 3.4V per cell down to 2.6V per cell. It came set at 3V but I put it up to 3.2V. Think I should go up to 3.4V?

@beyondRC
@beyondRC 3 жыл бұрын
Your welcome glad you enjoyed :) So with USB chargers they do the job if you are just getting into RC or its just occasional fun but any long term users i would suggest a proper multi charger such as the one i have. They are a lot cheaper these days so its a worthwhile purchase. The USB chargers will also charge at a much lower non adjustable rate which can make charging a longer process. Not against them they work and do the job for most people but simply not as safe or as reliable as a full blown lipo charger 👍
@beyondRC
@beyondRC 3 жыл бұрын
@@mikestranzl6873 that is correct full or depleted and no way of knowing unfortunately one of the issues with USB chargers. Like mentioned above they work but essentially do not give an indication of cell voltage or whats going on with the battery or the ability to storage charge for long term storage. Unless you are looking at putting the lipo away for months a normal full charge should be fine if we are talking weeks rather than months of not being used.

It’s always the safest option and I do that and then just top them up on the day but truthfully as you are using them quite frequently you could probably get away with not storage charging. Brilliant video mate. As someone fairly new to the hobby all the numbers baffled me. I spent ages looking for a 25C Lipo because the car manual said that's what it needed. Always thought going higher would damage the ESC. What is a good charger though? I only have the one that came with my 144001...
@beyondRC
@beyondRC 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you glad you enjoyed :) It is very confusing at first but once you get the hang of it and knowing roughly how much power the system will be pulling its easy to work out. Not at all even running a 100c battery when the recommended it 25c will not damage the system. The system will only pull as much power as it needs having 100c for example would be a bit overkill in this instance. I would recommend any multi charger with the ability to charge multiple chemistry such as nimh, nicd, lipo, lion etc give you lots of options should you ever need them. Dual and quad chargers are great as they allow multiple packs to be charged at the same time and with difference charge rates but much more expensive. A cheap 60-80w would do the job fine.

i love nimh batteries. just plug it into a charger with nothing to worry about. also they dont catch on fire or smoke, they just get really hot and can be repairable if its only one or a few damaged cells. the runtime is pretty good and most people say it sucks but not really. the battery goes 100% 95% 90% 90% 80% 80% 79% 75%. im not sure but its hard to tell the difference between running nimh and lipo when lipos keep their voltage while nimhs do not. stay with nimh if you can theyre a lot safer

@beyondRC

The 2s is 7.4v and the 3s is 11.1v so more voltage both will have the same capacity and each battery will depend on how much current you are pulling (use of throttle etc) but essentially both will have the same.

Airsoft veteran, RC noob here.. I'm confused as to why RC batteries and chargers also charge through the main lead. With airsoft batteries and chargers, we use ONLY the balance port. I am now considering an ARRMA 3S BLX truck, but I don't want to spend $200 on a special smart charger when my airsoft charger could potentially charge the battery fine. After some research on my charger, my charger charges through the balance port at about 1.5 amps. If I were to charge a 5200mah 3S battery with that, it would be completely fine from what I've heard, just a little slow. Is this true? I'm okay with it being a bit slow as long as I don't have to spend another $100-$200 on a charger plus the special batteries (Spektrum G2 batteries and charger). What are the benefits of using the main lead as well? Just speed?

Charging through balance lead only is fine but as you say you are limited to slow speeds. You don’t need to spend $200 on a top of the line charger. A sky rc t100 or something else cheap would be more than adequate. You will no doubt end up having more than one battery and that’s where dual and quad chargers come in which are capable of charging multiple packs at the same time. One single pack sure it might take 4 hours but it will work. I would highly suggest a proper charger though as if you plan on leaving a LiPo for a while you should use the storage mode. Lipo packs should not be left fully charged or depleted for long lengths of time as this degrades the battery. So yeah it’s doable but my best advice is if you are planning on getting into the hobby properly invest in a decent charger which will be totally worth it in the long run. 👍

@@beyondRC Thanks. I plan on just getting 2 batteries for now, since I'll only have 1 car that can use actual good batteries. I have an MJX HYPER-GO HB16BM rn that came with 2 cheap lipos. So when I get an ARRMA, I'll get a pair of 3S and use my current charger. But once I buy a 6S truck, I'll definitely invest in a dual charger 👍 thanks for the info

Alright I got a little confused I have an r c boat that runs on 2 2s batteries that are 7.4V and 4200mah But they say that I can run a 4s only 1of them.. why not 2? Also the 4s is a 8000mah and 14.8 Would the 4s last longer? Or give it more speed? I'm just a little confused because if i'm running 2 of the 2s thats 8400mah combined.. that would last longer wouldnt it?.. just alittle confused
@beyondRC
@beyondRC Жыл бұрын
So im guessing you have a 4s boat with an ESC that requires 4s to run properly. You have 2x 7.4v 4200mah ran together on your boat is giving you the 4s as its wired in series (Voltages combined to make 14.8v) its not giving 8400mah combined this would be a parallel connection. Have a research about parallel and series connections with lipos as too much to explain here. So in fact running 2x 4200mah is actually giving you 14.8v but you are still only getting 4200mah of capacity as both batteries are working together to supply the 14.8v. Running a single 4s 8000mah will work fine but it will be the same power as again its "4s same voltage as running the 2 packs. The good thing is you are doubling your capacity almost from 4200mah to 8000mah Sounds confusing but just do your research. Vids all over youtube :)

What about Lithium-Ion batteries? What is their place in the RC world? Lots of rtr's have li-ion's but no one talks about them.
@K5_RC
@K5_RC Жыл бұрын
Li-ion batteries have a much lower discharge rate, so they aren't used much outside of smaller scale / slower cars. A really good 3S li-ion battery in a 3S compatible car would be a little slower than say a 3S 50C lipo. Li-ions are MAX of 20C ish. They are great in terms of safety and reliability, but performance is quite lacking compared to lipos of equal voltage 👍

Thank you, these things don’t seem to me like a safe consumer product! For storage would it not be of just to ensure your pack is depleted by using it for a while so it’s not fully charged for storage?
@beyondRC
@beyondRC 2 жыл бұрын
Noooo! Lipos should never be depleted below safe voltage usually 3.3v per cell and storing them fully charged is also dangerous and damaging to the packs. The best thing is to use them and then use the storage setting on the charger if you plan on not using them for a while. They are perfectly safe when used correctly and been used for many years now. User error from improper research is most common cause of fires. Take some time. Read up on them and educate yourself before making the switch to lipos.

Hey buddy. You actually sold yourself, and this video short by your disclaimer. This is NOT strictly for beginners. I'm fairly decently versed on LiPo batteries, and learned things I didn't know before from this video. First off, thank you for that. But, I was unsure of the "c" rating. I knew it was discharge rate, but the formula for figuring out what your system requires is something I had no clue about until now. So, really the assumptions I'd been oparating under is, the higher the c, the more punch from the pack. Now I realize that's only part of the story. If I'm running a 60 amp system for instance, the 3s, 5200 80c pack, is WAAAAAY overkill, and is a waste of money, where a 25c would be more than enough really. That's something I didn't know. Wish I would've learned this far sooner, could have saved a good amount of money. Oh, and yes, I 100% totally agree with you when it comes to paralell charging. How is the charger supposed to read 6 cells, if you're charging 3 2s batteries? Or what if you throw 2 packs on, 1 with 5% charge, the other with say 20% charge? It's best just to not do it. I wouldn't even do a video on it, if I were you. Those are negative comments waiting in the wings right there. Best to just avoid that all together. Dunno how old this video happens to be, or if you ever did do a video on paralell. If so, how many times did you get cursed out in the comments? lol I ended up here, because after 2 freakin years "yeah I know, I know" I finally dropped a whopping 40 bucks on a decent charger a whoever rebranded it, imax b6. So, I've decided to hit the tubes, to fill in any holes in my knowledge, and figure out how this thing works. When I saw my friend beyond across the pond had this vid, here I am lol.
@beyondRC
@beyondRC 7 ай бұрын
Haha thanks man. This vid is kind of old now and was one of my most in depth vids I’ve ever done but wanted to clear up a lot of questions for a lot of people. So many people think higher c rating = more power/punch totally incorrect and it’s a way batteries companies are marketing things to sell more of the high end packs to people with lower end cars which will never benefit from the extra c ratings. Most RTR beginner/intermediate rc cars will only need 20-50c. Essentially the electronics will only pull as much as they need and that’s determined by many factors but a low end brushless system with a high end battery won’t perform any better than a lower rated pack. C ratings are one of the most misunderstood things In the electric side of the RC hobby.

FTX Ramraider. So in theory I could put a 100C 3s and it wouldn't damage it. This is my first rc so it's all a bit confusing. Read up on it hundreds of times but still confused what is is the best battery to get the most out of your system and how to do the maths based on the system. Could anyone work out the best battery for the Ramraider as an example. So I can see how you got to that conclusion.
@beyondRC
@beyondRC 2 жыл бұрын
The ESC will only pull as much current as it needs. Most 2s and 3s systems 30-50c is more than enough. The very high C rating stuff 100c+ is more for speed runners and very high output power systems which pull huge amounts of power. On the Ram-raider 30-50c is more than enough! That said running a 100c battery will not kill it. The ESC will only pull what is required.
