I think “The Substance” should be viewed as a fable. There is no specific time period. It’s my favorite movie of the year so I disagree with some of what Grace said but I appreciate her watching it but I think the film is intentionally vague.
@matiasdevaglia454115 күн бұрын
I 100% agree with you. I felt I was watching a dark and gory fairy tale, with many details left intentionally to the viewers interpretation.
@ivanlupi15 күн бұрын
Agreed. And considering what some people inject themselves with after they purchased it online, we definitely do not need to know who created the fluid or how realistic the premise is in order to say that would make a better movie.
@hannahmaria688715 күн бұрын
The substance, for me, is perfection. I think a lot of it coming down to seeing it at a point in my life, where I really NEEDED it. I truly think it will be one of them “classics”, it feels so timeless. It made me rediscover why I love movies. I’ve not felt so many emotions in a film for a long time now. I hope maybe with some rewatches grace will “get it” more.

Re. The substance, it is supposed to be a fantasy world, and the actual director said it as well. You should watch a conversation on you tube between Guillermo del Toro and Coralie Fargeat, it is excellent, and how Del Toro thinks it was the right decision not to add who came up with the substance or why, because that is not the point of the movie, that would be a distractor. To me, it felt like a complete movie, and I did not even feel the 2 plus hours of the runtime.

6:25 That is a general convention of "cautionary tale" type horror. The origin of the horror element isn't the point; it exists primarily to reveal the characters through conflict. A lot of the "origin story" of horror elements usually come in sequels or later instalments, for that reason

Alisha Weir wins young actor category for me. It's a lead role not supporting. She learned ballet for the role, participated in her own stunts. Shows great versatility as an actor, she was singing and dancing in her prior role. It was a challenging role for a child psychologically because she is playing an adult playing a child essentially. She also can shift between accents. Yeah hands down for me.

@matiasdevaglia4541 Which is why she is being nominated, not the movie
@kisaragistation522015 күн бұрын
Grace said she thought young Elphaba should be nominated for the award. She said none of her choices got picked. But that's comparing a small part with barely any lines to roles kids played that were carrying the whole movie with physical and mental hurdles.
@matiasdevaglia454115 күн бұрын
@@austinvhm I get it. I'm not complaining about her nomination, but sadly the quality of the rest of the film lowers her chances of winning.

With Shogun sweeping every awards show, am I the only one that feels really bad for Cosmo Jarvis being completely ignored every time? I thought his performance was excellent and very moving towards the end, not to mention the fact he's in the show far more than Hiroyuki Sanada, yet he's one of the only main performers to not get a single nomination as far as I'm aware. Feels a very unfair snub for the protagonist of such a prominent show seeing as he did such a great job.

The fact "The Substance" has original screenplay nomination is a travesty! And you voting for it after saying it's like a short film and didn't go all the way, and was full of plot wholes as you pointed, is just sad... Taking a potential screenwriting award from a deserved screenwriter and giving it as a participation award to the writer-director who's not yet fully fledged as a director so we'll award them for writing as if it's a lesser skill.
