This video will show you how to make and set two different kinds of bezel wire. I wanted to show how much more work it takes to set a plain bezel compared to some gallery wire. I also point out how the gallery adds a lot more detail to your piece with a lot less work.
Thank you to Metalsmithing-tools.com for supplying me with the pitch that I used in the video. Check them out at www.metalsmith... for pitch and other awesome tools for doing chasing work.

Nice video. The trick with the floss was new to me. I usually have an open backside on the pendants I make so I can push the stone out. Also it reveals more of the stone and saves silver. One thing I do differently is I put the pieces of solder on the outside of the setting rather than on the inside. For two reasons, it's easier to clean up and if some solder remains on the inside of the bezel, it can leave a little hump that increases the risk of breaking the stone when applying pressure while setting the stone. And I really like your saw, I've never seen one like that before.

I wanted to share I learned a really cool trick for bringing out the colors of labradorite (especially the blues) before you place your stone for the final setting take a piece of black electrical tape and put it on a piece of cardstock or printer paper. Cut it out to the dimensions of your stone and set it in the bezel add your stone to the top and holy cow I am so serious HUGE difference!!! Its really cool!!! 😁

If you do do that video, could you please try see the best way to do so without a rolling mill? That has been my greatest issue. It takes me forever to get an ingot to shape thin enough to be pulled thru the draw plate and would like to see if there is a technique that I'm missing to make it a little easier without having to invest in a rolling mill. I am just a hobbiest and only sell to pay for my precious metals etc. So it wouldn't be practical just yet for the mill.

Use a ceramic plate to make beads. No sparks. Angle slightly and beads will roll off to pick up tray. When alloying place lowest melting metal under or fold with alloying metal at lowest temp till low melting metal (zinc or tin) begins to liquefy and absorb itself (alloy) into the other metals then begin to increase temp and stir with stirring rod. 😉

I also dislike using adhesives ever. BUT (!!!) in MY experience gallery wire is practically useless and very wimpy for securely holding a cabochon. Reason: Any hair or string, another chain from a necklace, etc. when caught by the gallery wire (when, not if) WILL pull the wires away especially since gallery wire, as is most "bezel" wire is fine silver. I agree, gallery wire is way easier and very pretty, but I suggest using epoxy for this one application. Do you think that is a good idea in this case? I don't want to push my opinion on your wonderful video, so I appreciate hearing your thoughts. Has this ever been an issue in your fabrication?

@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 4 жыл бұрын
So there are a few things you can do with your scrap silver. 1. If it's clean silver aka it doesn't have solder all over it, you can melt it down and roll it out into new wire and sheet with a rolling mill. 2. You can sell it to a silver recycling company. I don't know of any good ones off the top of my head but I'm sure you can find some. Basically you send it off to them and they will send you a check. 3. You can use some of the small silver bits by turning them into balls by melting them. You can use them in your jewelry designs. That is just a few things I can think of right now and might help. 😁👍

Why are you using fine silver instead of sterling silver?
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 3 жыл бұрын
Fine silver works really good for bezels. It's a lot softer so you can form it around the stone a lot better. You don't have to use it but most bezel wire is fine silver.

@@GomeowCreations Do you usually make the rest of the piece also in fine silver, or just the bezel part? Can you use the same solder you use with 925?

I just use 925 for the rest of the piece so only the bezel is fine silver. You can use the same silver solders with it.

Do you recommend using easy solder for the back plate? I’m having a hard time with soldering the bezel to a back plate and I’m using medium solder and wonder if that’s the issue🤔
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 6 жыл бұрын
I don't recommend using easy for that part but at the same time I'm not saying not to use it. You can use anything that has a lower melting point than hard solder. So if you find it easier to use easy or extra easy then go for it. 😄

6:24 I would think it would be somewhat difficult to Hard Solder on to Fine Silver. Since fine silver is easy to melt and even disintegrate if torched too much. Yet with hard solder it can take sometime before it reaches its Melting point to flow.🤔?
@GomeowCreations

Yeah, this is normal and it does work. Just heat the metal from the bottom so you don't have the torch flame on the fine silver

Is there a better reasonably priced torch I can get to do small bezels, at most going upto 7/8 th of an inch. I am not looking for something that I can use with a cylinder.

I have been trying to find out how to get the dagger bezel wire to lay flat enough on the sheet to solder. No matter what I do there are gaps and I can’t pound it down or the daggers will bend obviously... how do get this to work? I’ve had no issue with any other bezel. Thank you
@Shukarr
@Shukarr 3 жыл бұрын
Once you’ve soldered it together you put the bottom part that’s going to sit in the plate onto sand paper and you sand it down. Hold it up to the light to make sure there are still no gaps. That’s how I do it. Sand the bottom edge to fit and the sandpaper must be on a flat surface

Hello! Do you have a specific tool or technique you use for getting a smooth, professional surface to the INSIDE edge of the bezel? I get the outside edge looking perfect, but the inside will a few dimples and needs to be burnished. I cant do it with a burnisher without touching the stone. Suggestions?
