I grew up with Guillermo and his brother Federico back in Guadalajara and it is true that Memo, as we call him, was a different kid. His bedroom was full of monsters and posters of Frankenstein and such. His first movie was made at his house when we were kids, around 11 or twelve if I can recall. He directed it and he made the little monster with clay, wire and a potato. It was just a few seconds long and he named it LA PAPA ASESINA, (The killer potato) I am 100% sure that was the beginning of his love for the movies.

It's not enough that he's a cinematic genius, one of the few who can explain his art and technique clearly and entertainingly, and that his knowledge is encyclopedic, but also that he can express himself equally well in Spanish and English. Spanish is of course his first language, and he's great fun to listen to, but he's just as entertaining in English. I'm simply awe-struck by his brilliance.

I'd much rather see his fables come to life. Every time. That typed, it would've been exactly what you said. I can't imagine a Del Toro film that isn't poetic and beautiful. On the other side of the fence, I don't believe that Kennedy and company would've allowed it to be a Del Toro film...
@RobVespa6 жыл бұрын
The wonderful thing about art is that everyone has a different perspective. I do not think the Last Jedi is a good film. My opinion stems from both my subjective perspective (which is perfectly legitimate, just as yours is) and from objective facts (which is, to a degree, still subjective).

The suit, filed in federal court in California on Wednesday against del Toro, Fox Searchlight and others, alleges that "The Shape of Water" infringes on Zindel's 1969 play "Let Me Hear You Whisper." According to the suit, the play "tells the story of a lonely janitorial cleaning woman who works the graveya...rd shift at a scientific laboratory facility that performs animal experiments for military use. There she becomes fascinated by a fantastic intelligent aquatic creature, held captive in a glass tank. To the sounds of romantic vintage music playing on a record player, she forms a deep, loving bond with the creature, discovering that it can communicate -- but chooses to do so only with her. When she learns that the authorities plan to kill the creature, in the name of scientific progress, she hatches a plan to liberate the creature in a rolling laundry cart and release it at a dock that feeds into the ocean, where it will finally be free." The suit alleges that "The Shape of Water" lifts from the concept to an actionable degree.Del Toro should be ashamed of himself. We're ordering Zindel's play today and will offer other evidence to support Zindel's claim. Sometimes famous people rip others off because they think they can get away with it. What an embarrassment to the film industry but since when are these guys a bunch of saints. Ray Bradbury once encoountered a similar rip off but he was alive and could confront the film makers; they at least gave Bradbury a credit. del Toro didn't offer a mention or nod to Paul Zindel who also wrote, "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds."
@Jamakaya16 жыл бұрын
It will be interesting to see how this case proceeds. Zindel's play was produced for National Educational Television (the precursor to PBS) in May 1969. The New York Times gave it a positive review. The review says the creature was a dolphin. Except for the tyrannical boss (played by a woman), there don't seem to be the other supporting characters (Zelda, Giles) or plot (the Russian spies) that Del Toro included. I love Del Toro and "Shape of Water" but if it's ruled that he infringed the Zindel estate's copyright, he'll have to pay up.

Lets hear all the Liberals make fun of GdT for having closeness to religion for inspiration.

Actually, he has said in many interviews that he hates the Catholic Church, all organized religion and orthodox ideologies. At the same time, he uses Christian and pagan imagery throughout his movies and his body of work is deeply humanist. Like most deep thinkers, he's a complicated guy.
@bigcrackrock6 жыл бұрын
@@Jamakaya1 Yeah he's said nothing to make me think he was himself religious in any of the interviews I've seen. It's time to lay off the partisan propaganda when you can't watch a video about film making without feeling the need to interject in the comments with the same old tired finger pointing.
