BG3: I Showed Auntie Ethel What Real Greed Looks Like! (Save Them All AND Get The Reward!)

In this Baldur's Gate 3 video, I pay Auntie Ethel a visit again. This time I utilize the Protection Against Good And Evil spell to use a mask of my own to sneak through her lair. At the end of the day, Mayrina is saved, the masked people are saved, and I even got a farewell gift from Auntie Ethel in the form of her plus 1 stat hair!
Ethel herself is dispatched after battle.
Simply cast Protection Against Good and Evil on your party excluding summoned allies, and then equip the whispering mask. Walk through safely and unhindered.
Keep someone outside of combat during the boss fight and then have them barge in on the final dialogue! Everyone wins! Except Auntie Ethel. She loses. A lot.

Yeah, I always knocked them out but... that doesn't really save them. And I have snuck through successfully but I wanted an easier way to do it. Hence finding the Protection Against Good and Evil method. Since that will allow anyone (no matter their skill level at sneaking) to do this!

@DarwinsGreatestHits Honestly, just role-playing. One may end up showing up later but can't confirm it as I haven't reached that possible point yet in this playthrough(been incredibly busy and also taking a semi break from BG3)

In mine, Ethel didn't even talk to me when she got low. So I had no idea that was an option.

She needs to get to her turn in initiative when below a certain amount. So if she is low enough, can skip your turn to let her talk.

10hp is a trashhold and you have to wait for her turn. Also make sure she is not silenced.

@WarpGhost92 didn't consider the silence being a thing but it makes sense. Game keeps surprising. On tactical, she actually hit the threshold in the 30s. I got lucky with my fireball damage.

Glad I could be of help! I know a lot of people suggest silence as well but that can also interfere with getting the +1 buff as Ethel can't talk when silenced. (If you do it on honor mode, don't use guidance when in dialogue btw... Ethel's legendary action persists even when in dialogue)

Someone asked in the comments how I cast Protection Against Good and Evil on all of my party members, but I cannot reply to their comment or see it on this video. Hopefully this still reaches them. I used multiple scrolls that I found all over the place in the start of the game. This could be random as scrolls can be auto-generated. I had 6 by this point of the game though. If you don't have enough scrolls, mages can cast it and have your party members go one at a time. Once the character that had it cast on them is in the clear, you can then cast it on someone else. This is very pricey for spell slots at this stage in the game however.

Did this method a second time still works, and for those wondering after you kill the hag and save those in masks and talked to them, do the save Mayrina quest, once that's done go back into the house to where the stone statue hobbit is you'll be able to talk to him and the elf that sees his future deaths you saved them also and you can talk to them now, don't long rest after the fight cause they might be gone after the long rest.

A bit late to the party, but for info. As of this date of my comment and latest patch I can confirm that this still works. I managed to get both the hair and save, Mayrina, the petrified dwarf, the Lorin the scared elf, and the masked people. Not sure what awaits in act 3, like many have mentioned. Thanks for the guide.

You can also be real cheeky send only 1 character with a mask sneak all the way to the end . . . . . . . . . . . . . . And send everyone in thru her teleporter southwest of the teahouse

The first time I played this game. I put these masks on, no protection from evil or anything and nothing happened. So I go do this in honor mode yesterday. All mind controlled tpk... wish I knew this before lol

Concentration spell. Need separate scrolls or have them go one at a time. Can also stealth through. Figured this was the easiest way though. Paladin at least also gets a chance to save so they don't need it technically(may be other classes with special prompts as well)

you can also kill her while she is still upstairs, this will also save all the mask people, however you won't get the hags hair, just make sure to have a monk at least lvl 5 and stun her, then kill her

Technically don't even need monk, does make it easier though! Early access, I ended up doing just that the first ever time I fought her and was expecting more. Turns out I just did way too much damage

I actually had to check the unedited footage for this and it seems like her body does indeed disappear. At first I just thought it was a jarring cut. I dunno why that didn't stand out to me when I did it. Good catch though. I don't think she had anything super important on her though, but it is good to know that doing this will make her unlootable.

It shouldn't affect it considering that quest is still active in Act 3 every other way I handled this situation. I haven't made it there on this playthrough, but I doubt it will prevent you from doing that quest. And this way is basically doing all of the methods all at once.

Was the entire party in combat? This could have been patched but I didn't see anything on that. I had to have one sit the fight out to be able to swap.

​@@Jettatura- Yes the entire party was in combat (not sure I would have survived otherwise), thankfully I was close to Ethel's room with Wyll so I ultimately managed to get to the portal (which exits Wyll out of combat) and then I used magic missile with my character to take out most of the clones so that Wyll can sneak close enough to cast his eldritch blast on Ethel. Thank god you can save during combat or else this would not have worked, and even now it took me hours. You did mention in the video to have a party member hang back and hide before going through with the fight, but that flew right over my head, hehe I was disappointed to find out that my character is the only one that gets the ability point, I thought that every party member would get one :(

@bitchplease7436 Well, glad you figured it out in the end! And yeah, single use consumable item. The only important part for the stat boost is the dialogue at the end. There are other ways to boost your stats permanently but I didn't cover those in any other videos as it's in act 3 and by that point it doesn't matter too much.

Yeah, on tactician though so at lower levels it is probably easier. I've done the fight on balanced at level 3 but it can be rough. This was pre-honor mode patch as well.

Putting the masks on totally immobilizes the entire party. They constantly are saving or failing her spell.

Yeah, you need protect against good and evil cast on the party(I used scrolls) or if you are a paladin, you get a special cutscene.

@@Jettatura- Did it, they just stood there getting charmed by the hag over and over. However I was able to put the mask on and take it back off on one character to get through the door. Putting the mask on everyone results in immediate paralysis.

@CHAOSMOVEMENT I wonder if something changed. Protection against good and evil is supposed to specifically protect against charms like that. Didn't accidentally break concentration perhaps?(each character with a mask needs a different source of the spell. For example, if Shadowheart casts it on Astarion, she can't also cast it on Gale) Sorry if this is unhelpful, I wish you best of luck! Edit: I forgot to mention taking damage can also break concentration.

@@Jettatura- No it's helpful, a lot of things change with this game. So, I used Shadowheart to cast it on the entire party, it seemed from their icons they all had it, then I put the masks on all of them. Immediately they all went charmed and refused to move because she was controlling them.

@@CHAOSMOVEMENT Ah yeah, that was the problem then. Concentration. Each character can only concentrate on a single spell that requires it. So Shadowheart cast it on someone and then tried to do it to someone else. The first character lost the spell in that case

Ah, they will only stand down if Ethel dies. You can still get the hair but you need to finish her off in a single packet of damage. It's okay if you have to fight them in the end as from what I remember, nothing comes of them surviving unless I happened to miss it. By that I mean, don't feel like you missed out. There is some dialogue but the game has plenty of content that makes playing through multiple times worth it so you can always try on a different playthrough.

@@Jettatura- I think that this has been patched I had a character sag off so they were out of the range of the conversation this is who I intended to have deal the finishing blow but as soon as I move my character even remotely close to be able to hit her it drew my character into the conversation and the range to be considered in the conversation is massive so you can be quite a distance away and still be considered in the conversation range

Look inside your inventory, it is an item. Once you use it, you get the permanent stat increase. Hope this helps!

I hate to say this but I'm honestly very frustrated and disappointed. I'm playing on Balanced difficulty and I'm no way a good turn based player. This fight was insanely difficult for me and in the end 2of my three characters were downed on the last turn which forced my fourth to show up in dialogue even though they were miles away. So I'n the end I still saved her and the power but now I'm save scumming to desperately escapythe 4 remaining goons. Needless to say. I got clowned on and got nowhere 😢

It is a tough fight to be sure. There are a few strategies to make it easier. Silence will prevent her magic and even making copies of herself but be sure to cancel it if you want conversation as she can't talk if she can't speak. You can bypass her invisibility by right clicking(not sure controller options) on her portrait on the turn order at the top to ping her position. Then any AoE, even create water, will make her visible again. When I did this on tactician, I was already level 5. Level 5 makes everything easier. Also, everything here was optional. It is easier to simply take down the masked foes earlier(I didn't for tp reasons, to save them). Wish you luck in completing this the way you want, and I will say not save scumming the first playthrough can make things more enjoyable. Failing is not an end state, but a different path at most times. Unfortunately for me, making videos often requires me to save scum, but I have been enjoying my honor mode playthrough much more than anything else so far.
