I know it's a bit late to give this reply, but if you find yourself again in that situation just press the pass button together with it. This will make your players do a fake shot which cancels any unnecessary clearing you were going to do. Helped me a lot.

I defend by holding jockey and sprint button, but my players never get close to the opposite players. Its good at covering spaces but I want to know how you put pressure on the player that has the ball. is there any time in which you stop pressing the jockey button or the sprint button?. Public Service Announcement for everybody who, like myself, hates the additional arrow which controls the secondary defender defending the ball carrier, you can turn it off on the fifa 19 main menu. I think its listed under 'secondary defender switch'. It makes it very frustrating when trying to lock onto the correct defender to stay a few steps ahead and make an interception.
