I love this man ... 'Mindfulness in Plain English' is (to me) hands down the best book on meditation around - not only practically useful but beautifully written.

Currently bhante Gunaratna is more than 90 years old. He had spent his practicing dharma and meditation in solitude for longer periods. If one person gets a chance to feed this monk alms for a day , the merit he would accumulate will be incomparable 🙏. Anumodana for his striving for nirvana.

@ciaran perry.. then you're really poorly read as arrogant as that is/reads. Lots wrong of course and lots right. Read about the biopsychology of early distress. Allan Schore alone you may like much. Have lotsa monastic pals of 3/4/5 + decades. Generally despite them being lovely pepes they're generally not that well informed.

The aspect of meditation that he speaks about is formal sitting concentration meditation, while the joke that some people proclaim is more mindfulness in the moment, which strictly is not formal meditation.

It makes sense that when you have this attitude toward meditation and mindfulness (that it has to be done in a very specific manner in total seclusion and quiet) that you cut yourself off from the world, refuse to marry, refuse to have children, and be scared of being involved in normal life.
@gunsup03318 ай бұрын
reading bhante has changed my life and made me better to those around me. there is no fear of being involved in normal life because you have an outlet outside of (social life as dictated now) normal life. our normal life is trash.

In society = fake = peripheral activities Emotional rollercoasters aint the complete life, but a superficial life. The real life is whats underneath, the burden that you have to deal with yourself. We do it alone.

Ass kicking speech He is right. But also I know, meditation is not DOING a meditation. Therefor you would do the same mistake, like what he is criticize. So don't take it to serious too! Meditation is not doing something with a goal. Just let go! This is true meditation. And yes, actually, you can do this by all activities. But he is right, you don't do any activity to meditate.
@Jc-in9oz7 жыл бұрын
this is wrong, meditation can happen anywhere, anytime, if you can relax your body and focus on your breathing, meditation can happen at any moment, even for a secound
@birkmcclain62207 жыл бұрын
i would think so, but i'm reluctant to say he is wrong
@daShadoSage6 жыл бұрын
Birk McClain but I wonder, do people often confuse flow with mediation or even heightened situational awareness with mediation. There is also, prolonged focused or deep mediation and its subsets in difference to acute 'shallow mediation which indeed can occur anywhere and anytime, however; it is usually an ability brought by extended practice of focused or deep mediation. Otherwise it maybe mistaken with the former occurrences. I believe brain scans and examination have shown this

He is talking here more about the "practise" of meditation in the formal sense. It even says so in his book mindfullness in plain english. he does say in the book that we can be mindfull in all these other activities as well but this is the formal practise. which is more on a serious level.
@aj_wuwei5 жыл бұрын
you are completely wrong , you should read his book once to understand where you are coming from and what you are explianing here...what you are refering to is meditation and what he is refering to is a elevated level of emotion,unbiased,no good no bad point ,where you become super aware of YOURSELF
@luciogutierrez9975 жыл бұрын
Yes, meditation should happen in every activity, but you don't go grab a basket ball to say you will start meditating. You get the biggest benefits sitting on your cushion with your eyes closed. If after that you want to go swimming, do it mindfully and continue with the practice you did intensively with the formal meditation. What he's saying is that you shouldn't take those activities by themselves as a form of meditation.
@jordangill271011 ай бұрын
He says in his books that mindfulness is about non-attachment. But he is attached to being a monk and he is saying here that he thinks a person can’t be mindful during day-to-day activities. He is scared of the world, thinking it will disturb his mindfulness and detract from his practice. He is attached to his monkhood. Scared of life and living.
