I don't think it's possible to use AI to invent detail in a Photograph without undermining the existential status of that Photograph, without turning it into a fundamentally different artefact in the minds of those who view it. The fact is that AI does not generate photographs- what it does is create images in the style of photography- these are not the same thing. It seems to me that the moment you use generative fill or any other AI technique that involves the invention of detail or content you are no longer in the photography business- you are in the image creation business, you are now a purveyor of fictions. There is nothing inherently wrong with that- but I think we need to be clear that this is not a continuum- it's a dichotomy- either the image you present is a genuine interpretation of a reality that was captured on film or sensor- or it is a fiction. So the decision to incorporate generative AI into your work is not and cannot be incremental- there is no gradient here, just a sheer drop, a stark transition from being a photographer to being a crafter of cunning but ultimately deceptive illusions.
