British Heart Foundation (BHF) celebrated its 6th annual Heart Hero Awards on Wednesday 6 December 2023 at Glaziers Hall in London.
The annual awards celebrate the incredible supporters who go above and beyond for BHF, including new supporters who have made an incredible early contribution or long-term advocates who deserve recognition for their involvement between February 2023 and February 2024.
BHF Hero of the Year honours either an individual, group, researcher, company, or organisation who has showcased amazing support for BHF’s work through either fundraising, volunteering, work within healthcare or research, gifting a large donation, raising community awareness, to name a few.
Professor Elijah Behr at St George’s Hospital in London has conducted detailed work into inherited heart conditions such a Brugada Syndrome and the reasons for sudden arrhythmic death syndrome, also known as SADS.
Not only is Professor Behr’s research bringing much-needed answers to families who have lost loved ones in incredibly challenging circumstances, it is also improving outcomes for people living with genetic conditions too.
One such family touched by Professor Behr’s BHF-funded research are the Crooks.
Jody Crook’s three-year-old daughter, Sienna, was diagnosed with Brugada Syndrome in 2021 after having a sudden cardiac arrest.
In those early days, Jody says it was reading Professor Behr’s research papers into the condition that brought her much-needed hope at a very difficult time.
