Really great points here, especially on the impact of playing Dean as openly bi on Jensen's career, and the frankly disgusting biphobia that is so deeply rooted in today's culture. The point you made at the end, that Cas sees Dean as a caring person and not a cold-blooded killer, perfectly articulates why Destiel as a canon couple made so much sense in the narrative. Cas loves Dean for who he truly is, a man who does what he does out of love. Even Sam has trouble seeing Dean as more than a killer. It really does make me sad that they couldn't allow that aspect of the story to resolve in a way that would've been satisfying.

Cept the seeds of Dean's bisexuality were planted since season 1. So, the writers, at least some of them were clever enough to write enough subtext to escape the notice of the bigwigs up at CW. Unfortunate, that they had to sneak it in as SUBtext but its still there, regardless.

Wow. I've never considered this as the reason why Jensen always avoids questions about Dean's sexuality/Destiel. It's so unfortunate that it's made him come across as homophobic to some people, when in reality it's the tv/movie industry that's holding back. This idea makes me more sympathetic to why certain choices were made for Dean both on and offscreen. And as much I wish all these things could be discussed openly and less controversially, I'd feel a lot worse if anything Jensen says negatively influences his career. Side note: I wonder if at any point Jensen talked to Misha about how the two of them presenting opposite Destiel views to the audience makes him look (or did Misha just dial back on sharing his opinions in general, to leave stuff up for interpretation)

Very thorough analysis, it's super interesting to get a perspective on destiel and industry from a fellow bi person. Despite learning how things work and change, it was kind of helpful to know that I'm not the only tired of being labeld as indecisive, experimanting or sometimes even exluded from the community because I'm a bi woman in hetero relatshionship. Actually, it would be great to get that explored in any movie or series (does it exist? any recommendations?) Best luck with the channel, I will make sure to watch next parts too. Also, I'm still giggling to myself that I was a 69th person to subrsribe, so bi and childish :D

I have yet to find any good media that addresses it. I think the only show to come close was Torchwood tbh. Ianto's journey to discovering his bisexuality as an adult and his family trying to figure him out. How he talks about it with them in Children of Earth resonated with me.

And not bisexual but "4th Man Out" is a pretty good exploration of what it is like to come out as a gay man in a somewhat conservative town and with want to be supportive friends who have no idea how to act because they legitimately have never met a gay person before.

I am amazed by people confusing sexuality with morality. The commitments made in marriage are serious and transcend sex. We are stupidly manipulated by sex. I didn't watch Supernatural too much, but I don't think that Dean was too mature in general. And just straight... Might be because I am. Thanks for giving us good philosophical and reality based topics to discuss with each other. I think I grew up too cool from the seventies in New York... I am sorry for the pain public and private attitudes, laws, and prejudices. Could a man just fall in love with one man and still prefer sex with women? And with him in a committed relationships. Man and Woman need relationships Or not. Peace.✌🤔

I'm enjoying this. My opinion as to why Destiel was never made cannon is that this show delt with religion. I live in the Bible Belt and when people found out I liked the show, they were quick to tell me I was going to Hell. If Destiel had been made cannon, there would have been mass murder.

Two weeks after the last episode, once the shock and denial has passed , I , in order cope with that cursed ending of supernatural have written a detailed plan for a 41 chapters long Fanfiction of what happens after, in Heaven and how both Dean and Cas are actually going to come back to life and even have a kid , then a 20 chapters long detailed plan for a sequel about the kid as well as detailed ideas off about 13 spinoffs ...and yes I do indeed intend to actually write all of them at one point in my life , maybe ! The amount of hate and stigma we as the bi community get absolutely makes no sense to me. It's disgusting that we are not allowed to still be attracted to all if we decide to be monogamous with someone. Like you said; we "pick a side." It's messed up man. I hate it. As someone who is bi and in a "straight presenting" relationship (my partner is also bi btw) it honestly baffles me so much. These terms I feel best represent me and one of the many reasons why I love destiel and Dean and Cas as characters is because I relate to their story, not just as individuals but how their relationship grows and how they change each other. How love can help you find yourself, or more so, show you who you really are and have been all along. :') Anyway sorry for the side rant. I really enjoy your videos and your analysis. And yea, bi misrepresentation and stigma and hate really pisses me off and so many people just don't get it. We cop a lot of crap being bisexual and it's not okay. I'll always wear my flag colours with pride though no matter what because I am proud of who I am. 💗💜💙

I really enjoyed your commentary! I found your take very refreshing, and it solidified a lot of my own ideas about Destiel as a whole. A lot of the Destiel analysis I consume tends to focus on one of directing, acting, or writing choices, while seemingly forgetting that these elements don't exist in isolation. I think there is a large portion of Destiel shippers who don't really consider the complexity of producing a show like Supernatural, and how those complications might impact characterization over time. I also appreciate what you have said about liking most of the show as it was presented. I see a lot of people talking about how they should have allowed Dean and Cas to be in a relationship on the show, and while I definitely would have enjoyed that, I 100% don't have any faith that this show could have handled that kind of long-term representation well. Speaking as a bi woman, I am so happy to see a bi guy on here making content about one of my favourite topics to obsess over...keep up the amazing work!

He is not in a gay role in the Boyz. Just a role that sucks it up and has gay sex for a place on the team in the comic. And they wrote that part out for the TV show. So it's still out there. (I do agree it wouldn't have been career suicide to do it in the last season, but the same as Sam's ambiguous wife, they didn't want to commit, and "leave it up to each audience member") Which is not a great choice of action in my opinion.

thanks for the video, this is something that I clearly needed to hear. I don't really follow actors but from what I gather, Jensen wasn't happy with the ending, because I guess it just murders his character's growth. he had to be talked into accepting it, and I guess the main arguments were that that's how the industry is. however, as an actor, he gave it all to act everything that couldn't be said in the script and we see that. I guess that's what we refer to as "acting choices", they were very deliberate. I hope one day he can talk about that openly and we'll know what was going on. the portrayal of these characters' is one of the most beautiful things on tv tho

Looking forward to this whole series (and all your other Supernatural content). Well done. I'm always interested in the perspective of other bi individuals because, even though we have something pretty significant in common, we don't always have the same opinions on everything. I'm excited to learn your POV of this whole Destiel discussion. I have to say, as a Supernatural fan, I wanted to ship Destiel so bad, but because the writers hadn't ever officially canonized it over the years, I held back my hopes. Of course, ever since 15x18, the dam has burst and it's all I can think about when I go back and look at the show. (I have come to terms with that fact that my heteronormative upbringing is partly to blame for this. I'm a GenXer. I didn't even allow myself to explore my bisexuality until my 30's and have only recently, in my 40's, claimed it.) I'm not exactly mad that Destiel wasn't explored earlier and more deeply, but you're absolutely right that it was an organic development and could have been something truly amazing. It was a missed golden opportunity. I'm not mad. Just disappointed. I still love the show though. I'm ready for your next video! Thanks for putting in all this hard work.

Wow thank you for the insight on Jensen’s possible reasoning for not opening up about Destiel . I’ve never thought about it that way! Also side note, you mentioned that the industry would be wary of showing a gay and bi relationship and you used bi and rainbow colors for your thumbnails so I know you think dean is bi but I wanted to ask if you think Cas is gay or are you using the term gay as an umbrella term and the rainbow colors to say he’s queer. Just like you’d die on a hill the dean is bi, I’d die on a hill that they’re both bi (or Cas is pan) considering Cas also had relationships with women on the show. It’s actually one of the reasons I really like Destiel because for me it’s rare to see relationships presented in media where both men are bi and I find this situation interesting considering that you and your husband are both bi
@BobWessSPN

I use the rainbow here as the sort of queer umbrella. I don't know how I'd personally classify Cas, probably pansexual or bisexual. Definitely not simply gay, because he did seem to enjoy his varying relations with women.

I think another thing to keep in mind is the time in which this show first came out. You can see the progression of more "liberal" storylines or ideas in the later seasons. It would have been bold, but potentially "show suicide" to have an openly bi character on such a (well what it became) prime time network TV show.

You know, I'd be really interested if you caught wind at all of the situation with Wentworth Miller. Wentworth for a while got straight sex symbol (or at least romantic desire object) status for a while when Prison Break started and his character was in a straight romance. During that time he was closeted. He stayed closeted for a while after Prison Break, did some movies, had some depression. He then finally came out. He got cast in the CW Arrowevse, his character was sort of an ambiguous villain type. Then he became a regular on an ensemble show, where there was some minor hinting and some fan support of him with a female character. He came back as a parallel universe version of his character who was gay and he has actually one to voice that he doesn't want to play straight characters at all from now on. I got really reminded of him (particularly of the period during his prison break days when you talked about the fear actors have of typecasting) I think it's kind of interesting to maybe take a look at actors who played gay confirmed for longer periods of time and what became of me. I guess Chris Meloni is the main one that comes to my mind who was on Oz in a very physical story with another guy (but also like violent and manly, maybe that helps?) and then did pretty well for himself on Law and Order.

Long post and 911 spoilers ahead: Huh, ABC do what CW don’t. All jokes aside, I would love to hear your thoughts on this entire video now, 3 years removed and clear change having occurred recently. While Buck being confirmed bi is a miracle and truly a step forward for representation on network tv, there are caveats. Even though I definitely want to take this occasion to stick it to CW for not going as far with Dean, it’s still complicated. Setting aside the fact CW was bankrupt at the time (though we didn’t know then), taking evidence from a later video you made regarding polls between Dems and Reps and tv shows reveals that ABC shows polled better with Dems then Reps (don’t know why I don’t watch network tv anymore). It’s possible that not only was ABC better financially, they had a more progressive base to count on. I don’t know, I just think it’s interesting to think back on this, especially since it was brought back into mind with so many Supernatural fans freaking out over it. And I get why, from what I’ve seen, Buck and Dean share a lot characterization wise; would definitely bring back a lot of old desires. It certainly did for me, to the point of shedding a few tears when I heard friends screaming about characters that I didn’t even know. That’s the power of representation, I guess. Just glad that some aspects of this video have aged poorly, and would love to spark more discussion about it. Have a good day, Mr. Bob Wess.

Honestly I think it was easier for 911 because it's 2024 and even the show started in 2018 Supernatural started in 2005 things weren't very progressive then. Or at least being gay or bi wasn't talked about as much back then openly. I liked that they didn't make destiel canon the whole time but I am really sad that they didn't let it happen on both ends at the end. Also 911 has hen and Karen too, which makes it a little easier to add another queer full time character.

I agree with you 100% though I see a lot of the same in Buck that I do in Dean. It's all the longing looks and the glances at the lips lol

Interesting video with a lot of great commentary. I thought the stuff about the industry not being as far along as we might perceive it to be was something to consider. Not sure I agree with you about your assessment of Jensen, since we don't really know if protecting his career has been his main motivator in shooting down Destiel as he's been known to do in the past. Maybe he just didn't see it, maybe he was just being homophobic, we don't actually know what's going on in his brain. He has made casually homophobic comments in the past and that's not ok, although I don't think he's a terrible trash bigot either, I think he's just a dude who grew up in a time with a lot of casual homophobia and internalized some of it. I do think he listened and got better, so, bridge, water, etc. I did definitely agree with your assessment on the way the tv industry shies away from bisexuals. I'm a bi woman and I've noticed this myself. Although I'll add that, I think tv is more willing to deal with bi women at this point (although laughably they still try to avoid actually calling them bisexual). Like, I can actually come up with more than one handful of bi/pan female characters on tv right now. However, the same acceptance does not seem to be happening for bi men. They still seem pretty taboo on television. Not even in the "this character obviously swings more than one way but we will avoid saying the word bisexual" thing they do with bi female characters. It's more that tv seems pretty resistant to writing bi or pan male characters at all. This probably has to do with the fact that most tv shows are still written by cis straight men for cis straight men, and lead male characters tend to be male power fantasy stand-ins. Most tv writers just can't seem to imagine a bi man in that role, or they think the cis straight men in their audience wouldn't be able to accept it either (and they're probably right). Bi women are more acceptable to male audiences because they're not a fantasy self-insert for the straight male viewer and for fetishization reasons.

What about alternative universe Sam & Dean who were sent to So. America? Shouldn't they have been sent to a MofL house, since they are all over the world?

Im from upstate NY and my family was never okay with my wanting women as a woman. Im still figuring it out at 30 years old being in the closet and trying to make straight relationships work for my job there is alot of non-acceptance and hatred even in blue states.

The only reason bisexuality is now seen as being trans-exclusionary is because of pansexuality being made up. That is not a joke or a hyperbole. The first definition of pansexuality online was literally "attraction to men, women and trans people". Pansexuality is transphobic and biphobic. Bisexuality has ALWAYS included trans people, so there is literally no reason why pansexuality as a label exists other than transphobia through othering trans men and women as being not /really/ being men and women.

I was interested in this but you lost me halfway through this video when you implied being effeminate is bad and abnormal. I do think that might not be intentional on your part but it's exhausting as someone who is effeminate to hear implications that effeminate characters are common (in my opinion they aren't especially not outside of a five minute joke) and that being effeminate is a regressive portrayal of queer men.

Seriously I am interested in discovering and surfing through the LGBT-item , and my interest includes all aspects . But there are not so much people & resources... talk about it ... And even less - take this responsable! But I really want to be knowledgeable about the issue of LGBT minorities, their role in society, all all all. I want to know that I understand the possible features of the interaction (again - even as I write this, I'm not sure I'm expressing myself correctly... But I want ro!🥹) . *Similar views will happen to me often during the review of this selection. So yes)* Again, you are a godsend for me, Bob💫
